Is gravity on Diaemus established?

Assume that it's earth-equivalent. We don't need to lower the gravity to allow for large, flying creatures like other fantasy settings since we have flexible magic to compensate.

No one answered if I can actually have a gigantic 250,000 square mile rock... :(

I've started coming up with possible races for it as well. The Gauldur Boretha, led by the Mikill Einn (most of these words are in the modern version of old norse- Icelandic.) The normal Gauldur (common short name) have small amounts of orange lumuoles and white lumuoles, but barely any magic. They are exceedingly strong and fast, 5 or six times stronger than a normal human and about 3 times faster. They feed upon things containing lumuoles, and the larger the amount the more they crave said plant or animal. Mikill Einn have large amounts of almost all lumuoles, and therefore have an affinity for all but fire magic. They also are 2 times faster and stronger than the normal Gauldur Most tribes only have 1-2 Mikill Einn per tribe, of which there are 100, give or take a couple.

Gauldur are easily burned, as they produce an oil they is nearly as flammable as gasoline. The fungus they eat, Sveppur Gullgeretharlist, has large amounts of lumuoles, more than most plants and non-sentient beings, and the only thing worth hunting for them one their island is a large crocodilisk, about 45 feet in length. There appearance is that of an approximately 7 foot frilled lizard. They can stand on two legs like a raptor, but usually revert to four legs to hunt.

So, would this race be acceptable?

Also, I think it would be cool to do RPs in this world later after things are a little more smoothed out.

No one's really "in charge" here, so it's not as if one of us can just give the idea a thumbs-up and let you go ahead. The only real responses that can be given are "neat, that's cool" and "I have an objection." Provided no one objects, it's fine.

Speaking of which, first of all:  ;)

And second, did you say something about these Skyrim-amulet people having superhuman strength and speed? Oh wait...

Wow. I mean, there's nothing wrong with mixing things up a bit when you're making new races, and we never bothered making restrictions on what people could do with it, but... holy cow. I think that creates a few problems, don't you? Wouldn't these people have outcompeted the rest of the sentient races during the preagricultural period? Maybe you could tone that down a bit... or not have it at all.

"Gauldur" means "Magic" in old norse. "Gauldur Boretha" is the closest I can get to "Magic Feeders". It actually means "Magic Fed". Also, mostly, they're quite dumb. Basically beasts, with the exception of about 1/6 of the normal population (with human intelligence) and the Mikill Einn (slightly smarter, but has extreme Hubris). Fire kills them very quickly (they practically explode- you've seen gasoline ignited before, right?). And being so dumb, people that use purple lumuoles to easily twist them around. Also, I'm making them photophobic. Their eyes are like a watchwher's from the Pern books- they have a lot of lenses, and can see perfectly during the night, but during the day the sun causes blindness and physical burning of the retinas, which catches the rest of their body on fire. (note: this is for the Gauldur, not the Watch-Whers.)

Magics of the Mikill Einn:
     Water:
Manifests itself by redirecting currents while swimming.
     Electricity:
Manifests itself by paralysis; claws and teeth paralyze prey.

     Wind:

Manifests itself by allowing the Mikill Einn to influence (not control) wind speed and direction.

     Earth:

Manifests itself by hardening it's skin; is almost as hard as stone

     Purple:

Manifests itself by allowing control over the mindless Gauldur

Extra Weaknesses:

     True Weaknesses:

Each Element occasionally works against them; water will go in a different direction for a moment; they are paralyzed for a minute or two every once in a while (very useful); Wind goes in a different direction; The island will magnetize them once in a while, forcing them to be immobile (very useful); Occasionally hallucinates. (note: these can happen anytime, but are more common while using that power).

     Social Weaknesses:

Human intelligent Gauldur will sometimes rebel against the Mikill Einn. Also, Gaulder are very loyal, so you can befriend one and have it protect you.

To be fair, Diaemus is a species of bat. Also, any ideas on how to make dragons original and not stereotypical?

Genus, actually. Though you are to be forgiven as there's only one species in it. :P

(My brother at this point knows to question every fantasy name I suggest to him with the query "What latin name did you rip this off from?")

So is the world carried on the back of a space bat?

Excuse me sir, but the world is on a turtle and elephants!

Just joking. I was actually thinking of a thick forest in the Ashosos Region with a Bat/Owl species.

People base dragon habits on crocodiles or birds of prey most of the time. What about colonial nocturnal dragons based on bats?

How about frogs? Also dragons with bird feathers are so cool.

Well I thought more like dragons that sit all day and eat smaller animals, but the image of a man hearing a singing sound and screaming in terror is now burned into my brain.

Cenni Lodgehouses

The Cenni Highlands are sparsely populated, not because the land can't support large groups of sentient creatures, but because its various tribes are so competitive that society is in a near-constant state of flux. Far outside the reach of the sedentary villages of the river valleys, and the clan manors that cluster near them, are the Lodgehouses. Fiercely independent and proud, they've had a massive influence on the region's culture and politics.

Unlike the flatter, more civilized lands to the East, the Highlands can still support a hunter-gathering lifestyle. There are tribes, roving families of humans and dromeans that live off the land, but the underclass of shamed expats and banished citizens of the warring villages and clans typically didn't organize themselves that way. During the early history of the Highlands, they and their descendants lived solitary lives, forming small families but otherwise remaining mostly independent until enough time had passed that they could rejoin society. Early in the 1700's BCE, however, there was a period of particularly intense tribal warfare, and this created far more expats than usual. The primitive leagues of dishonored peoples who met periodically for worship became larger, and grew to a size where they actually had an influence on local politics. Within a few hundred years, these leagues occupied a unique niche in the Cenni culture. The leagues, or Lodgehouses, were no longer just groups of refugees, but stable organizations that raided and worshiped just like ordinary political units despite the fact that their members lived solitary lives.

Lodgehouses typically consist of 20-50 human or dromean members. Healthy members don't actually live in the lodges, they just meet there periodically for "moots." Most lodges have monthly religious festivals that members may or may not attend, as well as an annual or biannual festival that serve as a more formal time to meet and discuss. Each house has a patron god or goddess to which it dedicates itself, and when members make a group decision, it's usually made, supposedly, in the interest of that being. Lodgehouses are cults, in that sense. Militarily, they have two major concerns: the first is chasing out roving tribes and apex predators that have moved into the cult's hunting grounds, and the second is raiding. Like most Cenni societies, the members of the Lodghouse Cults rate a person's worth through combat prowess and the amount of loot they've taken, so raiding is considered to be extremely important. Cults tend to be made up mostly of men and women of fighting age, and so a coordinated Cult raid is a serious threat to villages and clanhouses. When the Lodgehouses themselves are attacked, the Cult members just disintegrate into their own dwellings for a month or two, then meet again to discuss revenge.

The social culture of a Lodgehouse is designed to keep the Cult solvent. Members trickle in and out periodically from the valleys and other Lodgehouses, and this is where Lodgehouses get most of their population. When human members become pregnant, they typically stay at the Lodgehouse after a few months and live off of donations from other members. The bonds of parent to child, and sibling to sibling, are respected, but Cultists refuse to recognize half-siblings and cousins as family, and it's an unspoken rule that humans shouldn't have more than one child from the same lover, and that dromeans shouldn't keep more than one egg from each clutch. This is deliberately done to discourage the development of family ties, which the Lodgehouses associate with clans, tribes and the disruption of ordinary social bonds. Cults are made up of individuals, not families, and even though it's acceptable to take another person under your wing as a child or apprentice, valuing that person above another will slowly rip apart the fabric of the cult.

Children, pregnant and nesting human and dromean females, and the sick and elderly usually do spend most of their time at the Lodgehouse, or more specifically, in dwellings nearby. They spend their time weaving, sharpening and maintaining weapons of war, and meeting with traders, useful services that help to validate their worth to the members who donate food to keep them alive.

Of course you can join.

And yes one or multiple (not sure) people have begun making water-breathing races, but you can make your own.

There really isn't much in the way of rules except for the 1st post. You just choose a region and write about your race on the wikia(link in 1st post of thread) and share cool stuff and ask questions here. Also- HAVE FUN.
