How "Standalone" are the Stormlight Archive books?

Not sure if I should have this in the SA section or not, but, I live in a constant terror of spoilers so I decided I'd post it here and people could complain as needed.

So, basically, I'm wondering how much the Stormlight Archive books rely on their sequels? I'm quite eager to read them, but, I don't want to be waiting years to see any kind of satisfying "End".

The Mistborn Trilogy, for example, each one ended at a fairly satisfying transitional point where you wouldn't feel quite as bad having to wait for the next to be written.

It's doubly worrying for me because I've heard it's currently planned out to be 10 books long, and I have no idea how "Sectioned" like the various Mistborn Era's will be.

Hopefully I got my question across clear enough, started out really well in my head... I don't think it translated that well when I wrote it out. Also, needless to say I'd highly prefer there to be no spoilers in the replies. Thanks!

The Stormlight Archive is supposedly broken down in two sets of five and they very much build on there being a sequel. The first one ends with somewhat of a breather note but still makes it very clear that the story isn't over (kind of like the Well of Ascension on the "read the next book scale") and book two ends with gigantic sequel bait.

I'll probably just wait until more are out, I know that after reading the first one I'd not be able to stop myself reading the second.

I'd probably quite enjoy speculating over the future, but, because the Stormlight ones are generally larger and take longer to write, plus the fact I have to wait another 6 months or so for the smaller physical copy of the book... Just a bit too much waiting for me, I think.

Guess I'll stick to waiting for Shadows, and crossing my fingers He writes a short online story or two set pre-AoL.

My opinion on the matter is that yes waiting for sequels sucks I would rather have to wait then spend 3 months finishing a 14 book series that has already ended and needed another author to finish it. Yes WOR does end on a sequel hook, but a lot of plot lines also get finished up and we get a lot of good character development. On the bright side we only have to wait for about a year until the next book comes out and considering how long it takes other writers (I'm looking at you George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss) that is a small miracle.

If you really hate waiting for sequels, wait until SA5 is released to read the first five. That said, you're denying yourself the opportunity to pick up subtle things by rereading the existing books while you wait, and the opportunity to talk about each book with the rest of us as you go, so up to you what you prefer doing. :) Plus, at the rate things have been going, it could be 2020 before the first five books are finished.

See, if I were you I'd read them anyway. Even if you want to read them one after the other, you could still read WoK and WoR now and a few months before SA3 comes out re-read the first two. I find that every time I re-read the first two I find more and more information that I missed the first time around.

The beautiful thing about Brandon's books are that they are not only a mile deep, but they're a mile wide also. I'm now on my third re-read of WoK and I am STILL finding new things that I missed the first two times. Even if we have to wait a few years in between books, re-reading the ones already out is quite rewarding.

Oh, and Brandon ISN'T GRRM. He writes books at a predictable frequency and usually only a few years apart. So, you don't really have to wait too long. (And when we do wait, we get other Cosmere books...like a few Mistborn books, short stories, etc.)
