  1. Well, they live in another country so with the postage it'd be more like $70. Guilt tripping is always a valid strategy
  2. So, told a friend of mine I bought the latest SA book yesterday and they proceeded to ask me what the SA was about and... I really struggled to make it sound interesting without throwing out spoilers or just incoherently about how good it is. Anyone else want to give it a go?
  3. Oh, that looks awesome! I'll definitely be reading through that in a couple months when I read Dawnshard + RoW.
  4. Looks great! I've been doing this for my Discworld Puzzles, so I'll definitely be making my own frame for Bridge Four as well at some point. For me it's gonna come down the difficult choice of picking which wood to use for the frame...
  5. This was an absolute delight to read, and I just wanted to know if the two of you had any thoughts on doing any other Cosmere books, or if you'll just be sticking to Stormlight?
  6. Thanks! Coppermind might be best, had a quick glance at the layout of the site and doesn't seem like there's much chance of accidental spoilers (Seen a lot of wikis that have stuff like "Popular Pages" and "New Pages" in prominent spots...) Mind you, the TOR analysis could be interesting... Might come down to if I've finished reading the rest of the Cosmere by the time I come back to SA, as well as how long the analysis actually takes to get through.
  7. So, I'd put off reading SA for a long long time because of how unfinished it was, but, I finally got around to reading it and after a huge binge session I just today finished Oathbringer. However, I can't get into ebooks so I have to wait for my physical copy of Dawnshard which is likely going to take some time, so I'm probably going to take a few month break to read some other stuff before I continue on with the series. Was hoping someone could give/link a bit of a summary of the series of each book I'll be able to use as a recap to get me refreshed when I come back to SA. Preferably in this thread, rather than a link, as spoilers are going to be easier and easier to stumble across as time goes on. Thanks!
  8. Yeah, if I ever thought I'd sell it then I'd probably be quite thrilled. Support said nobody else has messaged in about it, and I got in fairly late to the shipment, so it's possible it's a one of a kind. Still, I'm a collector at heart and presuming he still plans to make more Leatherbound Anniversary editions, I would prefer to have a "Matching" set. If it was cheaper, and the First Printing was still available, I'd have just bought a second one and kept them both.
  9. I have~ Been talking to them since I got it and so far we've not arrived at a conclusion that would leave me satisfied. Still, managed to send in photos today (It was a bit of a puzzle figuring out how to get both sides of the book in the one photo) so I'm hoping that'll speed the process along a bit.
  10. Upside down might be more apt? Basically the back cover is on the front, and vice-versa. So, if you're reading the book the words on the spine are upside down.
  11. So, my copy of the Leatherbound Elantris arrived earlier this week much to my excitement. I had been waiting a while, as I wasn't sure if I'd missed the Christmas cut-off or not (I definitely did), so it was amazing to finally see it in the flesh. Unfortunately my excitement died a rapid death when I found that the cover was attached back-to-front. Anyone else encountered this issue? I've been chatting back and forth with the online Store, but, have yet to reach a satisfactory outcome.
  12. I believe she does that when injured though, so that the sharp spike of pain clears the senses, which wouldn't have an affect on being Dura-Soothed. It's not that the Dura-Soothed people have their thoughts muddled, or blocked in any way, they're the exact same people just completely devoid of any emotion. They can look at someone and recognize them as their mortal enemy, but they would be completely unable to muster up the emotional drive required to actually care about it, and do something. I think the more reasonable question would be if there's any natural impulses that completely bypass that? Obviously all the subconscious things like Breathing aren't affected, but could you Dura-Soothe someone who's swimming and have them drown?
  13. Yeah, I wasn't sure if they created all the life, or if perhaps there was already life on the planet and they just wanted to make Life that was their own, but it does sound like it's very likely they either made the planet themselves or found themselves there during it's formation. So I think it most likely that when they created Scadrial, or arrived during its formation, the balance of Ruin and Preservation caused Ferulchemy to manifest as the "Natural" magic of the planet and later on when they started tinkering about using their individual powers it allowed the two "Unbalanced" Metallic Arts to form.
  14. Was there life on the planet before Ruin and Preservation made their own? I can't remember the exact reasoning as to why Preservation wanted to make life so I thought maybe the Terris people were the original species of the planet, and then Ruin and Preservation made whatever the Skaa and Nobles were before Rashek tinkered with them.
  15. Well then assuming that for Ruin to influence someone it needs to be a valid Bind Point, a valid Metal and the Spike has to carry a hemalurgic charge... I think the next logical question is: How much can a Hemalurgic Charge actually decay? Is there a limit to how much it can lose (E.g Once it reaches, say, 10% of its initial strength it no longer decays)? Can it decay so much that the Spike un-charges? Or does it decay in fractions instead of a steady rate so that the charge can become infinitely smaller than the original, but still remain Charged even though the affect is far too weak to actually notice?
  16. Well, assuming that only the actual pin part of an earring needs to be the "Spike" part, then each earring would be a pretty small part of the Inquisitor Spikes, all of which I believe were fairly large. Although, since the Earring is going into one specific Hemalurgic Point then does that mean that only Earrings forged from the right Metal Spikes could be used this way? Ruin always needed people to be spiked in specific locations, is that solely so that the extra power granted is another way to influence people? Or can a Charged Spike inserted into the wrong location provide no Hemalurgic Power, but still prove a way for Ruin and Harmony to influence the mind? Either way, since Ruin was making more Inquisitor's in the background after the Lord Ruler died, it's likely there are far more Inquisitor Spikes available than we think.
  17. It seems that the Hemalurgically gained Bronze was important, since I believe it was mentioned that Ruin had to wait until a perfect scenario arose (That being a Mistborn in a position of receiving a Spike from a strong enough Bronze Misting while also in the vicinity of someone crazy or spiked enough to be influenced by Ruin) for his plans to work. Although I think that was also Sazed speculations, so, it could very well be wrong. But, it makes me think that maybe it's not actually the Well of Ascension that they're sensing, but Ruin's confined consciousness. I'm not even sure if the Sacred Piercings were even proper Hemalurgic Spikes, personally. I think it more likely that Ruin can influence anyone wearing any kind of piercing in one of the correct locations, even if the Spike isn't "Charged". Similar to how Allomancers can burn any metal, even though the majority of them do nothing or have adverse affects. SoS Spoiler: As to the Earring-weaponry, I think that was Ruin's influence myself. He wanted her to not think about it, so she'd keep it in as often as possible, but he can only influence so much and it took stressful situations before she'd risk damaging/losing it.
  18. I'll probably just wait until more are out, I know that after reading the first one I'd not be able to stop myself reading the second. I'd probably quite enjoy speculating over the future, but, because the Stormlight ones are generally larger and take longer to write, plus the fact I have to wait another 6 months or so for the smaller physical copy of the book... Just a bit too much waiting for me, I think. Guess I'll stick to waiting for Shadows, and crossing my fingers He writes a short online story or two set pre-AoL.
  19. damnation, was afraid of that. I guess I'll see how the third one leaves off before deciding to pick it up or not then.
  20. Not sure if I should have this in the SA section or not, but, I live in a constant terror of spoilers so I decided I'd post it here and people could complain as needed. So, basically, I'm wondering how much the Stormlight Archive books rely on their sequels? I'm quite eager to read them, but, I don't want to be waiting years to see any kind of satisfying "End". The Mistborn Trilogy, for example, each one ended at a fairly satisfying transitional point where you wouldn't feel quite as bad having to wait for the next to be written. It's doubly worrying for me because I've heard it's currently planned out to be 10 books long, and I have no idea how "Sectioned" like the various Mistborn Era's will be. Hopefully I got my question across clear enough, started out really well in my head... I don't think it translated that well when I wrote it out. Also, needless to say I'd highly prefer there to be no spoilers in the replies. Thanks!
  21. Thanks! I think at this point it's probably easier to list the ones I haven't read. Which would be... Reckoners (Barring Steelheart, didn't realise it was part of a series when I picked it up so I'm waiting for Calamity to binge the end) Legion (And sequel?) Emperor's Soul Stormlight Archive Wheel of Time I think that's all of them... there's possibly some more shorts I haven't read as well. I don't have a favourite Pony, although I do enjoy a good Stick. Edit: Warbreaker! I also haven't read that one yet.
  22. I'm fairly sure, but not positive, that Snapping was caused by any extreme emotion, but doesn't necessarily have to be fear or pain (Those are just the easiest).
  23. Couldn't really think of anything to say, so... Hi! I'm new here, obviously.
