I think the unwritten rule is that if your acronym exceeds the length of the first identifying word, you toss it and don't look back. Can we go with "Shadows"? I might not pick "Slow," but even "Slow Regard" or "Silent Things" is easier to type..... The rules are very loose.

These books are excellently written, but WMF was just a bit too gratuitous for me. Still loved it though.

My Name is Vin.

I have been called by many names. The Heir to the Survivor, the Ascendant Warrior, Wife of Elend Venture.

I have danced in the hall of my enemies. I have walked with the Survivor and gained his hope. I have defeated the Kolos horde. I have walked the halls of Kredik Shaw as both prisoner and victor, then destroyed it in a moment. I freed my people from themselves. I became a god.

I have  saved the world, loved one man, and killed gods.

You may have heard of me.

Randomly interjecting here on the 12th page because I just finished the first book and I noticed this quote, in Chapter 43

I felt myself sweat cold and thought about what Teccam wrote in his Theophany: There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.

Maybe some clue as to the source of the second book's name? I haven't read the second book yet though...

Well, up on my 'need NOW' list is TSRoST, The Broken Eye, the and possibly Clariel, depending on how I enjoy the series upon reread

Ok. Am I the only one who actually really dislikes The Doors of Stone as the title for Day 3? I feel like it has much too literal and too unpoetic a meaning for the title of a Rothfuss book. The first two books and the Auri novella's titles are just so much more majestic and I feel like they (well, we don't know about Auri's yet, but it's a good guess) have such depth of meaning to the stories. Yes, the Doors of Stone are very significant to the plot, but I feel like so far they just don't have the same depth or level of significance to them as the titles of the first two books. Is this just me being picky, or does this bother others as well? (The title particularly bothers me because Brandon has said he will change the title of Stormlight 3 if Pat gets his book out first. Stones Unhallowed is so poetic that it would be a shame if Brandon had to change it to something as bland as the Skybreaker he has proposed. If Pat keeps DoS as the title, I could end up with two books from my favorite authors with bat titles.)

Well, the doors could be metaphors for the doors of the mind, as well as the immovable doors that shut off Kvothes friends and resources one by one

I guess there will be something like that. I just don't like the sound of the title, regardless. It is far less majestic than The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear.

I think I heard somewhere that Pat was considering renaming it because of kind-of spoileriness a while ago? Anyway, a few metaphors about stone doors, and I'm sure we'll all be thinking about what an insightful title that was.

I kind of have to agree - though it's only marginally less direct than The Name of the Wind. It was very early in Day 1 when it became clear that a big part of the plot, or at least Kvothe's arc, was going to be the discovery of the name of the wind.

Regardless, The Doors of Stone has never been finalized as title. We - Pat included - have kind of been using it since it was announced as a placeholder. In fact, Pat often refers to it as Day 3 because of that. But I would not be at all sad if it stays as TDoS. It's not a bad name.

Im currently re-reading this series, about 200 pages into a wise mans fear, and just wondering with book 3 hopefully coming out next year, once that brings us up to kote/kvothe's present day is there any details on whether there will be a present day continuation of kvothe's story?

Or is day 3 and the telling of kvothe's past the end?

I read that Patrick Rothfuss actually wrote the entire series in one shot, and just has been editing the manuscript as they are released.  He heavily edited the first book before it was released (Devi wasn't even part of the original manuscript, for instance), so I'm positive that by the time he had to get to the third book, the entire draft had to be redone.

It's been nearly 4 years since the release of the 2nd book.  I think a lot of fans' (myself included) issues is that Patrick Rothfuss does not give us a single shred of updates on the novel.  Maybe Brandon Sanderson has spoiled us, as he is constantly giving out status updates of his projects.  It would be nice to hear something out of Pat on where the book stands, at least.

At least Auri's short novel is coming out at the end of the month.

Brandon is pretty unique in his frequent updates - I monitor about a dozen authors regularly, and occasionally check out another dozen - and none of them are as diligent in informing readers about their progress. Frequently (but not always) you would see authors noting when they hit a major milestone (the big ones being first draft, final draft, final version, and release date), but that's it. So yeah, Spoilderson.

With Pat, however, I can take the delay because he updates his blog with other cool stuff and because I know that the reason for his seemingly slow writing speed has more to do with the sheer number of revisions he does than with his actual writing speed. Like, Brandon does between 5 and 10, I think, depending on the book, and some of them are not even full revisions (e.g. going through and just beefing up the dialogue is a revision, but he doesn't revise the entire book in it). Pat does hundreds. And it pays off. The rereadability of his books is amazing - we find new things all the time, and he does this practically just with masterful control of his prose - something that does take hundreds of revisions.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things Came out today. Short short centered on Auri. I'm really looking forward to reading this at lunch.

Lovely little book.  Very Rothfussian for sure.  Not really a traditional book as there's no real plot.  Brings Auri and all her mystery to light.  It seems like she isn't too different from Elodin.  Maybe even more perceptive to the world than he is.

I have a feeling she's gonna get her heart broken, which just guts me.  She clearly cares deeply for Kvothe and his eventual disappearance from her life is going to be a struggle for her, no doubt.

The one line that did catch me immediately was "and he was absolutely not a selas sort."  Maybe a foreshadowing of Kvothe and Denna's eventual strife and Auri's ability to see the truth inside Kvothe?

I've read the first two chapters of The Slow Regard of Silent Things. So far, it's been a huge MEH. I'm not really surprised that I don't like it. Rothfuss has been putting out disclaimers that the book wasn't going to be for everyone since the very beginning, after all. I'll finish it, because I don't like leaving books unfinished. But I don't really enjoy it.

I'm two chapters in and liking it so far. When he said it was a book from Auri's perspective this is exactly what I imagined. It's very atmospheric and the Underthing has a real personality from her perspective. It's creepy. I hope there's more hints of her possible secret identity.
