(Reply to off-topic) He is based on Jesus, yes, but the belief system surrounding him bears little resemblance to Christianity. It's far simpler, with no traditions or rituals, and if there were any denominational disagreements, I didn't catch them. And don't get me wrong--I do think traditions have a place. They can be beautiful, and they can draw one's attention to the truth. But in my experience, some can also obscure and distract from the truth, and in some cases, adherence to the ritual can be seen as more important than the underlying belief itself. I don't think traditions and rituals are inherently harmful, but I love the idea of a faith that is nothing but adherence to the truth and love of that truth. 1

(Reply) ah ok, I thought the whole thing was based of Christianity. (For full disclosure, I haven't read the books in years and I knew pretty much nothing about Christianity at the time. So I'm going off hearsay). I think traditions can add to and help express truth, but I agree the truth is the point. Maybe if there were no rituals it would be too abstract for us. I don't know. If not, I don't know that I suggest it, but it's okay in some parts. Anyhoo, the entire series is so blatantly copied from The Chronicles of Narnia. And not just general concepts either. Details. The Wood Between the Worlds == The Neitherlands. Pevensie == Chatwin. Aslan == Ember. Narnia == Fillory. Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve inheriting the throne is the same. Aging out of the secret land is the same. Even the rings that allow transportation to the Wood Between the Worlds become buttons that do the same with the Neitherlands. Oh yeah, remember the ponds in the Wood Between the Worlds? They're in the Neitherlands. Remember when they almost lost their pond in the wood and had to mark it? Yep, same exact scene in The Magicians. I really don't know how Grossman got away with it. Anyway, they do explore the pseudo-Netherlands a lot more in The Magicians. Content warning, though: Sex, violence, language, and very dark themes, including hinted pederasty. Like I said, I don't know if I would read it again.
