HemalurgyIsMessy
Ok, so I have just finished the Mistborn trilogy, and am currently working on Elantris. I will be reading Warbreaker and WoK after this. So far I have not read anything in BS's books about the "Cosmere" or "Hoid" or anything like that and I am trying to keep myself spoiler free. So my question, once I read all of these books will things start to get explained or is the cosmere something that BS mentions outside of his books to try and link them all together? Please no spoilers.
Nepene he/him
Way of Kings and Emperor's soul explicitly explain some cosmere stuff. In Elantris the culture isn't doing especially well, and in Mistborn the dictatorship is bad for scientific progress, so there's not a huge amount of explanation. But, the chapter starts in the third book of Mistborn are by someone quite cosmere aware, so there are some insights in there. A quick reread might help. Do you remember them mentioning what happens if metals aren't pure in the books? That's worth remembering. You will never have all of it explained to you. It's background. Don't read this bit if you want no spoilers about the Cosmere. There are no spoilers about the books. Look out for any explanation of how magic works and how the three realms work. What is the power source of magic, what is the limitation?
HemalurgyIsMessy
Hmmm....well I looked at the cosmere 101 and skimmed it a bit once I read that BS doesn't explicitly mention it in his books, and that it's more of a background thing like you said. I skimmed over some stuff from WoK and all that, but it's VERY VERY interesting with the shards theory and stuff. And now that I'm thinking about it I remember reading the part when Kelsier was talking to Hoid. Hmmmmm..... I think I'm going to hold off on going too much deeper until I read WoK and stuff, but now as I'm reading the rest of the books I'm going to get a LOT more out of it. OMG! I'm excited to keep reading now!
HemalurgyIsMessy
Also, by no spoilers I just meant that I'm the type of person who wants to figure stuff out on their own, ya know? I don't want things spoon fed to me, but I also need to know that an entire sub-story about a cosmere, a mystical dude named Hoid, and shards of some god-power exists so I can find it in the books! Nepene he/him
Yeah. It feels pretty epic. Hoid adds a lot to the novels and explains a lot of the weird events and why they happened. A lot of the stuff is very interesting to spot, but you probably won't be able to spot it all without some guidance. Good luck though.
HemalurgyIsMessy
Guess I'll just have to read everything and catch up, get on here and join in with you conspiracy theorists, then re-read everything again..........awesome!
Voidus
Yeah a lot of the mentions in the books are unlikely to be noticed unless you already know a bit about the cosmere, once you know a few general bits you can pick up most of the book references, although because it's Brandon you can be sure there's always going to be some incredibly complex bit of verbal trickery where he revealed something without any of us catching it. Hope you enjoy your read through and good on you for trying to figure it out for yourself first!
Shardbearer he/him
Yeah, this stuff is much easier to pick up on a re-read rather than a first read, since you can look up stuff you're reading about online without worrying about finding spoilers as well. I think I already read the Misborn trilogy, Elantris, and Warbreaker before I became cosmere aware.
Binnut he/him
I actually read all of Brandons current books before I become cosmere aware. I think there was a mention of Hoid somewhere that I saw before starting to read TWoK but not more than that. That makes it a lot more interesting to read the series again now things as small as a sentence can make you realize connections between books and cosmere theories on this site. Kurkistan he/him
I think I read everything before becoming Cosmere-aware. Maybe not WoK, now that I think of it, but even until a bit after I finished reading WoK I was still only knowledgeable to the level of "Hoid? Shards? What is this nonsense!?" HemalurgyIsMessy
I just love how BS added all this extra stuff into his world. I actually looked through HoA last night for the chapter where Vin has a chance to talk to Hoid and internally is like, "this doesn't feel right". Just kinda creates this creepy atmosphere. I haven't even begun to look at the theories out there and already I'm intrigued.
