Hood he/him Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Oh! one more thing. This book has the weirdest sex scene, that I've read EVER. We don't know what the lady says, but the man praises her in Latin ("Pulchra sunt ubera quae paulum supereminent et tument modice"), and the comparisons are really...unique. Like: "Thy hair is as a flock of goats that lie along the side of Mount Gilead, thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, they neck is like a tower of David whereon there hang a thousand bucklers"
rmmateus he/him Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Read China Miéville's The City & the City and it blew me away, one of his best. Just started Robert Jordan's Cheyenne Raiders and it seems equally thrilling
Briar King Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 Not sure if I said it here. Started my Dresden reread. On bk 1 about 100 pgs in. This is very strange on a reread having an under powered Harry. I'm going to count the Fbombs in bk 2. I think some here said they thought this one had more then usual. Maybe it was on Theforce.net.

It's also wierd bc it is missing the great secondary characters like Michael, Molly, Butters etc that really add to the series.
Sunbird she/her Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 @Briar King I was the one who said that Fool Moon had more F-bombs than the average Dresden Files book. @Ammanas Butters is hilarious. "Polka will never die!" 1
Draginon he/him Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 Finished Well of Ascension. I liked the building up for Feruchemy and the kandra. The inscription from Kwaan was great as well. Allrienne kind of reminded me of Glinda from Wicked so she was a bubbly character I couldn't help loving. Tindwyl reminded me a bit of Cadsuane, except much more loving and understanding, Spoiler And I wish she didn't have to die in the end The whole plot with the mist spirit, Kwaan's inscription and the prophecy of the Hero of Ages was worth reading. I felt so bad for Sazed in the end since he is easily my favorite character in this series. Next up in the Sanderson-a-thon: The Hero of Ages 1
Darkness Ascendant he/him Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 Just finished "The Sky so Heavy" by claire zorn. The aftermath of a nuclear accident, experienced from Australia. Pretty scarily realistic.

Cadsuane is a little too harsh Pretty much Cadsuane if she was effective at her job. Cads worked on Rand for quite a few months and got very little done, Tindwyl works with Elend for a few weeks and gets a king out of it! Cads uses harsh words and spankings, Tindwyl uses harsh truths and a raised eyebrow. I like both women, though I like Tindwyl much more, even if we only get one book with her T.T

I forgot how much I liked the original trilogy. I plan to go all the way through Era 2 as well then a Stormlight re-read before Oathvember.

If Cadsuane had gotten to Rand before the events of book 1 things may have gone somewhat differently between them.

Looking at my reading schedule I'll probably be getting to WOK in November since after HOA is Alcatraz 1 & 2, Warbreaker, Alcatraz 3 and then WOK. I have a planned break somewhere in there to read a couple creepy stories for Halloween but have no idea where in there it'll be. 11 hours ago, Dunkum said: to be fair, Elend was a much better student than Rand ever was. and Rand was somewhat crazy. If Cadsuane had gotten to Rand before the events of book 1 things may have gone somewhat differently between them. To be fair Cads was treating him the exact same way she would treat a monarch and when she finally realized how crazy he really was she was cowed. Pretty much she was a kindergarten teacher teaching high school students! But yeah, Elend (and practically every single hero Brandon has written) is a good student because they want to learn more and be better, unlike Rand who got to the point of "Ta'veren will take care of it for me since it's supposed to happen anyway" which bit him in the butt a few times.
rmmateus he/him Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Rand's burden was much heavier than Elend's, and Elend was much more predisposed to Tindwyl's teachings because he wanted to be a better king. Rand was more problematic because he was the only one that could save the world, he was becoming mad, and he distrusted Aes Sedai. Cadsuane had it more difficult, but I don't think she did a really bad job. After all, she transformed a puppet of the Hall into a strong Amyrlin. She problem was Rand all along.

Cadsuane had a much harder job than Tindwyl did.
Ammanas Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 (edited) Continuing my Glen Cook Dread Empire reread. Just finished An Ill Fate Marshalling and going to start Path to Coldness of Heart (a novel that might have traveled the strangest road ever for a book to be published and came out about 25 years after the previous one). Love this series! Edited September 11, 2017 by Ammanas 1

Cadsuane had a much harder job than Tindwyl did. I was not referring to Siuan. Cadsuane kidapped an Amyrlin (Myriam Copan) and "taught" her a few things. When Myriam returned to the Tower she became a strong Amyrlin. Siuan was never meant to be a puppet because she was elected for her skills. Note: Cadsuane was only 53 years old when she did this. It kind of shows how badass she is. To stay on topic: Jordan's Cheyenne Raiders is a great insight on what will be the Aiel. I strongly recommend it. Edited September 11, 2017 by rmmateus

Briar King Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 My Malazan and Dresden rereads couldn't be more satisfactory. The characters in Midnight Tides are down right hilarious. Knowing what's in store for Harry is exciting.

The dynamic is great. Just finished Red Seas Under Red Skies. Really liked all the pirate stuff. Starting Republic of Thieves next. I have to say that reading them back to back, so far, has been a good time. I don't feel like I noticed any drop in quality. More like the story just continuing on, idk. Starting to feel a little bit like I'm not a very good book critic though. My only 2 judgments are pretty much "was it fun" and "did it drag too much?" I've either found an amazingly long string of quality stories to read, or I don't know my head from a hole in the ground, lol. 3

Briar King Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 I ll be curious to hear your take on Republic. As I've said more then a few times...I hated it and feel for the trees that gave their wood for it to be printed upon.

The parts with Chains and the hideout really do it for me.
