Bort
So, I'm planning on going to FantasyCon in Nottingham (UK) in October, and I was thinking about costumes I could wear. While I'd love to put together some kind of Mistborn outfit, or even Bridge Four's uniform, I really don't have the figure to look the part - whoever heard of a fat bridgeman? So, I was hoping you guys may be able to offer a spot of help. I need to come up with a character fairly quickly, in order to get the costume done in time, but I can only really think of one that might work. Sebarial, as I recall, was described to be a fairly robust chap, with a tendency to produce wind at inopportune times. I can do that too (might even get a whoopy cushion to incorporate it into the costume somewhere, so I can produce inappropriate noises when the situation calls for it). Can anyone else think of any chubby males from the Cosmere? Also, could anyone point me in the direction of a good description for said chubby character? Thanks
Slater
Breeze from Mistborn is perfect, portly and always wears a dapper suit.
Bort
Not a bad suggestion, Slater, thanks
Oudeis
First, I'm gonna tell you not to let yourself be body-shamed. If there's a character you want to be, be him, and don't worry about not fitting the body type. From my own awful, awkward cosplay experiences playing characters I don't have the type for, I can tell you, people will always be more supportive than you think they will. At my last con, I went to two different panels expressly about encouraging people to feel good about their own cosplay, and several other panels that touched on it obliquely. That said, I don't want to assume that this is what's happening here. If you simply from a personal standpoint have made your own decision to cosplay as a portly character, I support your decision as much as I would any other you'd make. Just realized this is in the Stormlight Archive thread, not cosmere theories, so I'm throwing this paragraph behind a spoiler tag. For all other series. In that spirit, perhaps Telden Hasting? In the first book he's a big guy, and by the third he's gained a lot of weight. Still an attractive, debonair man. Not a ton of descriptions so it might be a tricky cosplay, you'd spent a lot of time explaining who you are. Rock's a big fella. Hunky Kay? Uncle Kiin of Elantris, though unless you're a lifelong smoker the voice might be tricky. I had the impression Ashweather Cett was a large fellow. Brightlord Roshone, I believe? My advice is to do a Bridge 4 uniform, maybe with a bow, and go as Rock or "generic bridge 4 guy", or to say "Rust it!" and be a Mistborn. But hopefully I've given you some options. soulcastJam
Cett could be fun, but be prepared with a wheelchair.
InstantWalrus
Dress regular but with a white wig/dyed hair and deny any allegations you may be hoid while acting suspiciously like hoid and dropping blatant clues. But then im super lazy so that might have influenced my suggestion
The Sovereign
Kiin from Elantris is a fun one. You just have to master the raspy "Crushed-throat" voice. Edited July 16, 2015 by Iron Eyes

You will be impress!"
Bort
I'll admit, Rock is tempting, although I don't think I could do his accent justice. I also like InstantWalrus' idea for Hoid.
ParadoxicalZen
Sadeas? or better yet, Sadeas with a gouged eye? x)

maxal
I support the motion you should go for your original idea, no matter if you body type is not adequate. You can still make an awesome costume, adjusted for your size, and make this character some to life. Besides, I do not recall reading every single Mistborn was fit and I do not think every single bridgemen were described. I see no reason why any of them could not be portly. Think about it, these guys were either former slaves or soldiers who displeased so much they were send to death as being made a bridgeman was the equivalent of a death sentence. They don't live long. They die right away, so even if they live on a crude regime while being there, it does not last long enough for a portly slave/soldier to have lose the extra weight. Surely not all that were send to run bridges were initially skinny and fit............. some must have been downright overweight, because it just happens. Some people are just bigger than others. I see not reason why there would be no portly bridgemen. However, if you truly want a character described as such, Sadeas is a good pick. Highprince Vathah in his flashy ugly orange robe is also a nice one. You could also go for King Galivar, who said he was fit? He wore huge fancy robes... It could be he lost his shape while aging, it often happens. Rock also is a good choice.
ccstat
If you don't mind being a sadistic mercenary (or just want to carry around taxidermied pets), Tonk Fah is another large-ish character. According to the wiki, he is described as "large of girth." I think that could be a fun costume to do. Taking this another direction, koloss are definitely large. Proportions aren't described, but I imagine them coming in a wide variety of shapes and body types. So if you want to go for the blue skin and giant sword look, that's a more exotic option.
Bort
Sadeas is a good choice, if I can get the Shardplate made up (might actually be possible), so I think I'll keep him in reserve. Koloss is another brilliant suggestion. Not too convinced I want to paint myself blue and walk around in a loincloth all weekend though. It's in October - if I tried this, you'd not need to paint me blue by the end of the weekend, I'd be there already, just from the cold. Thanks for all your suggestions guys. Much appreciated Edit: Another idea: Get a giant hamster ball, paint swirly lines on the outside, so the face of it changed whenever I moved anywhere, and go as Pattern Edit 2: Ok, so I've settled on Sadeas. I will be presenting the people helping me make my costume with two options. We can go for the easy way (make something that would look like one of Sadeas' random outfits), or the hard way (Sadeas' Shardplate - they may well go for this, just for the challenge). Time and cash permitting, if we go for the hard option, I may well have Oathbringer made up too Would you guys be willing to help out? I'll need any and every quote out there referring to the red Shardplate Sadeas wears. I've already started compiling them, and have a comment from Elhokar's chasmfiend hunt, and another from when Kaladin first sees Sadeas crossing a bridge. Patrick Star
Bort, can you please just make sure that you include the gouged eye? Even if you just have some "bloody" gauze wrapped around it. That would be awesome!
Bort
I can certainly try, and although I don't recall which eye it was in the book, on my costume, it will have to be my left eye. That one already doesn't work, so having it covered won't blind me like it would if I cover my right eye.
natc
That's both convenient and rather unfortunate at the same time.
Oudeis
Okay... now you're making me want to do a koloss. Buy one of those muscle skin suits, get blue material and make a body oversuit, rip it strategically to reveal the muscle underneath, streak it with bright red dye in places to simulate koloss blood, shear off some nailheads and put them on my shirt (glue? Magnets?), make a big ole blunt wedge-shaped sword, throw a loincloth over the whole thing... EDIT: Suddenly realizing the irony that "wears a loincloth guy" might be my first costume to cover literally my entire body except for my eyeballs. Bort
@natc: Unfortunate, maybe, but I've been that way since birth, so I don't know any different. Convenient, quite possibly. @Oudeis: Ah, yes, I didn't think of a muscle suit. That may negate the cold, just a little. Another thought... From my earlier post: Edit: Another idea: Get a giant hamster ball, paint swirly lines on the outside, so the face of it changed whenever I moved anywhere, and go as Pattern Or, better yet, set up some kind of fluorescent/glowing thing in the centre, so you could go as a Seon. Bort
I know I was going to go to the convention as Sadeas, but having seen the picture Brandon posted on Twitter, I have another idea... I have a similar build to Brandon, and could easily do a costume like this. It strikes me as being a little meta - most people go as characters, I'll go as the author
