I'm rereading the Mistborn series right now, and I noticed the Allomantic symbols in the first book. But, as I got to book two, the symbols confused me? I looked ahead to book 3 and saw symbols that these were foreign to me as well. Does anyone know what these symbols are from?

I think they're just earlier versions of the alphabet, book two is supposed to be just after the ascension I think and book 3 is pre-ascension.

Book one has allomantic symbols, book two has feruchemical symbols, and book three has hemalurgic symbols I believe.

Voidus has the right answer. The 3rd book has the Terris alphabet, then 2 is the development of the alphabet after the ascension, then 1 has the "modern" alphabet as of The Final Empire.

(sorry, I couldn't find a more direct source, and I'm a bit short on time).

Feruchemical symbols look totally different, they are triangular in form. The pictures on the wiki. They'll probably be the chapter images for the second trilogy, with potential Hemalurgic symbols in the third.

And for the people that mentioned Feruchemical symbols;

Vague resemblance, but no real link to the Steel Alphabet. I'd guess the Feruchemical symbols predate even the proto-Steel Alphabet by a long time.....

Is this from the Adventure Game? I have the book, just have not finished looking through everything.

^Yes, it is. My understanding is that that table has the modern feruchemical alphabet, which started with the same original symbols as those in HoA, but diverged from that point on.

There used to be a great source on Isaac's site which described the history behind the evolution, but it was lost during an update. If someone could find it that would be awesome.

In other news, the coppermind has many of the symbols, but we're missing the HoA symbols, and the Feruchemical ones could do with being turned into SVG's. I've made a (woefully inadequate) page for the http://coppermind.net/wiki/Steel_alphabet'>Steel alphabet, which will be vastly updated with the above-mentioned info from Isaac.

The three sets of symbols show the progression of the Allomantic text through the ages. The earliest script is from Hero of Ages. It was changed and modified into the Terris script symbols we see in Well of Ascension. After more time, the Terris script morphed into what is now known as the Allomantic Alphabet or the Steel Alphabet, which are the symbols used in Mistborn: The Final Empire. We’ve extrapolated the Steel Alphabet into a script that’s more-standardized and refined for the chapter headings in Alloy of Law, which takes place 300 years after Hero of Ages.

Indeed, there's already tables of translation spread about the wiki, but that article is probably the best place for a central table
