And tons of our other Epics just got less likely, as well as confirming that all of our teleporters and energy epics are perfectly cannon. :P

How many energy Epics do we actually have? It's resurrection Epics that I remember there being a surplus of.

Headcanon accepted. :o

That's what I thought. She knows about Ty, so she probably knows other things, but I'm under the impression that even a nicer Epic like Edgerunner would be afraid to share her weakness with anyone.

Good. Now to make sure Edgedancer knows. :P

Exactly. She'd have a hard time giving someone that kind of power over her again.

Vondra knows the weaknesses of Glamour, Redlight, Deathwish, Arsenal, and Scribbler.  (Didn't we agree in PMs that Scribbler told Autumn and Vondra her weakness? I don't think she told her whole backstory, but I'm pretty sure she at least told them about alcohol removing her powers.)

Would he require Edgerunner to share hers? She wouldn't want to, but she'd tell him as long as he promised to not tell anyone that wasn't necessary.

In other news, Brandon just now answered Mailliw's question about unique Epic powers!

Is it just me, or does this halfway confirm that Epics like Big Al exist with unique but useless powers?

So it appears that one liners with simple answers are much more likely to be answered. :) I just asked a follow up.

I'd say Epics like Funtimes, Voidgaze, Aldo, Cornucopia, and others more bend than break canon. Maybe all the uniquely powered Epics went to Oregon because it's a state known for its quirky cities? :P And I think the fact that many of those Epics have a more common secondary, or a twist on a more common power helps.

But yes, if anything, that comment seems to make all of our teleporters and energy converters more canon, not less. :P

He'd ask her, probably repeatedly. She wouldn't be required to share it per se, but she would be under a fair bit of pressure to do so.  He'd tell only Arsenal and maybe Autumn what it is.

Does it have to be Arsenal? :P She'd hate that part. Autumn's fine, but Arse? :P (She'd likely make that face upon hearing that Arsenal would know. ;))

Concerning the AMA, I wonder if he doesn't notice replies much, because not often does he reply to a reply. Maybe it's better for those questions to get their own post.

Arsenal is in charge of city security. And it's not like he'd ever go mad with power or anything.

And prepare for Comatose's monster getting caught up post (serves me right for being busy and sick over the long weekend:

So I will want to start Heatsink off as in the government, are all his powers and everything fine?

Last I checked they were.  I'll give him one more once over though :).

That is a good idea. I will see about doing that. :)

Also, just watched the new MLP episode, "Make New Friends but Keep Discord":

Tree Hugger is best pony. No further arguments will be accepted. I have made my decision. :D

Also, if Nathan started hanging out too much with Revolution, would Funtimes send her to the Dimension of the Mustached Sock Puppets?

I loved the latest episode (I am officially caught up).  Discord's jealousy was fantastic, and tree-hugger was suitably annoying.

Did anyone else detect a hint of romance between Fluttershy and Tree Hugger?  I know MLP is usually devoid of the stuff (which I appreciate- Twilight's crush in the movies, which I attribute to an influx of teen girl hormones, drove me crazy!), but it was interesting to me that Fluttershy, who is normally paralyzed when meeting new comers (at least originally, I get that she's grown in confidence since then) invited someone other than the Mane 6 to the Gala.  She was also more physically affectionate with Tree Hugger than she has been with other ponies.  It could be the creators just did this to make Discord more jealous, but it definitely gave me some food for thought.

Kobold? I think Revolution ought to make the first move here. :P

Well, that one episode where she visited Ponyville and had tea at the Cakes' bakery proved she has some trollishness in her, and it could be argued that she invited the Mane 6 to the first Grand Galloping Gala—with as little background information as possible—in hopes they would liven things up by making fools of themselves. So there's certainly precedent. And given Twilight's meticulous nature, I'm not inclined to believe she'd let something as big as Discord's invitation slip through the cracks, unless Celestia gave her incorrect information about the best way to get his invitation to him on time.

I'm a big fan of the theory that everything that happens in the show is a part of some big 'master plan' of Celestia's.  She's often refrained from acting at just the right moment to enable Twilight to make some crazy discovery (like letting Twilight track down the elements so they would bond with her and her friends instead of facing Luna herself, or getting Fluttershy to befriend Discord mere episodes before the elements of harmony that are needed to keep him under control are returned to the tree).  She's definitely a wily one.

To appease the Taylor Swift song, all of my characters are 22, and those that aren't 22 are feeling 22. :P

I forget why I multi-quoted this.  Perhaps it was just to LOL?

I leave for one week, ONE WEEK, and it takes three hours to catch up on everything.

No more noticeable than the fact that I've inadvertently turned Bubbles into an arsonist. She's now drawn Seattle and Denver , and then edited the art to have them burning. Though sometimes the best character quirks stem from accidents! As a side note, I love assertive Chase. Makes me sad she's a coward when confronted face to face.

Corvallis comments and concerns:

I'd like to preface by saying I in no way intend to insult, or offend, anyone with anything I am about to say. I am not attacking you, your ideas, nor your characters in any way. Hopefully what I do say won't warrant such a preface, but just in case.

Well, this escalated quickly. We went from a city with one High Epic (Rainmaker) to having that one High Epic take on three others in a single evening. I find this mildly frustrating. I thought the purpose of Corvallis was to be a relatively low power level thread, with relatively little combat that would ultimately result in the Queen's downfall (with most of the Queens presumably dying, save Chase and maybe Cornucopia, depending on Voidus's plans).

That's not to say I dislike where this is going. I am not frustrated with any of the players, nor their characters, but rather am frustrated at how quickly those original concepts were thrown out the window. In just three pages, those original ideas for Corvallis have all but evaporated. I do however, like where the thread is headed. There is much promise for good roleplaying as the Queens struggle to find Euphoria and keep Corvallis together, Iconoclast and the potential Converter/Phoenix duo confront each other for the first time (will they team up or fight each other), and the vanilla rebellion somehow tries to form a cohesive rebellion amongst all the previously mentioned conflicts.

Other notes about Corvallis:

Why do we keep referencing vanillas at the stadium? There aren't any. Like, any. The ones Chase used to initially taunt Converter all died (I think) thanks to Converter, and everyone else was escorted away by Buttercup and the police. Buttercup is the only one to have returned, meaning even the vanilla police force is absent. There should be no vanillas at the scene.

Silver, are you wanting Converter to get away, or to be captured?

I share the same concerns about Corvallis.  My hope is that after this crazy confrontation, the decline into chaos can resume, at the future attempts by Converter to destabilize things will be more subtle.  The descent into chaos might go more quickly than we originally planned, but I still have a lot of hunt for Euphoria stuff planned, so it would be nice if we could still fit all that in.

I think we are waiting for a Converter post next, and then there are a couple of options as to how she gets away (Phoenix, Iconoclast, and Insight all have reasons to release her, so we'll have to see who is the most plausible option).

Huh. I'll take your word for it, then.

So "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is a show you'd recommend watching, then? I've heard that name frequently on my travels through the Internet.

Things I love about Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Legend of Korra (the sequel), along with the reasons why I think you'd enjoy it (from the limited amount I know of you.

1.  It does well at balancing humour that both young and old can appreciate without diminishing the complexity of its plot or compromising its characters.  It's one of the few shows that can go from silly to serious and back with fluidity without giving the watchers whiplash.

2.  Along this vein, like MLP, I feel the show elevates viewers instead of dumbing things down for their audience.  Again, the characters are beautifully rendered with complex mixes of personalities, concerns, and motivations, and none of them are simplified down to the one-note character traits I have seen in other cartoons.

3.  The animation is gorgeous, especially later on in the series.  It takes a while for the animation, the plot, and the characters to really grab you in season one (slow to start), but from the mid-point of season one onward, it's pretty fantastic.  In particular, the fight scenes, especially season 2 on, are some of the most beautiful television ever.

5.  The world-building is incredible.  There is so much symmetry between how the magic system functions, how the different nations are set up, and spiritual beliefs of the people work.  It's really awesome.

6.  Back to characters (can you tell what my favorite part is?), the creators do a marvelous job of creating individual characters who are not defined by their race, class, gender, etc.  You'll meet young men and women who fit, contradict, and subvert the stereotypes associated with different aspects of their person in a spectrum of ways.

I forget what else I was going to say, but I could honestly go on about this series forever.  It has some of my favorite characters and moments, and I regularly have moments where I wish it was still running because nothing has captured my imagination in the same way that show has (except, perhaps, for Brandon's books :P).

So once this part with Converter plays out in Corvallis, could someone in the government help me add Heatsink in?

Yes, I think that can be arranged.  I'll brainstorm options.  Right now, I think we are waiting on a Converter post.

Probably not. He'd be in Hawaii before the first particles of radiation hit him, and I think most of our characters would be smart enough to figure that out. I think it'd be more likely for someone to try hitting Astoria with one to take out the dangerously OP Epics there, or for an invading force to try using a small tactical nuke to crack open the force field surrounding Corvallis.

Or use one on Iconoclast. That is a perfectly acceptable response to a threat. :P

Did you see this Voidus?  I won't comment further, but it indirectly reminded me of our earlier conversation in PM...

There's an Epic I've been thinking about making a part of the Corvallis government. (Sort of. He'd be better described as an 'interested third party.' As such he might float around a little between the cities. And he's more than likely to play both sides of the conflict, as well.)

Accord/Witness: (Haven't quite decided yet.)

Primary Power: Witnessing: Can make any contract between two parties binding. Binding as in they are physically compelled to carry it out; neither can break it, even if they want to. They are also compelled to comply to any additional terms (IE, penalties for not completing their part of the contract) if necessary. Contracts are rendered void if the participants do not sign of their own free will. (Under duress is fine, but it Hypno or another mind-control Epic were to force someone to sign, it wouldn't work.)

Secondary/Passive: Teleportation: Can instantly teleport to anywhere he has previously been.

Both of these abilities may be gifted, to up to twelve people while retaining power himself. (So thirteen total.)

MO: Having no offensive powers to speak of, he will give his services to any who ask, but he always exacts a price for his services. (Often hidden in large amounts of legal jargon within the contracts.) His end goal is to slowly gain power and resources until he controls Corvallis, and eventually Oregon. At the moment though, he only has a few dozen vanillas and a small handful of minor Epics in his service, and the current chaos seems like a perfect opportunity to increase his power.

Do you think he could work/add an interesting element to the overall storyline, Comatose?

I think he could add an interesting dimension, I'll comment more later, as I address the concerns others have brought up.

What a fascinating and trippy power

Lots of creative things you could do with that.

Does this pulling force occur at all times? Can Bee change how fast/slow he moves?

About Corvallis: I'm thinking we should move it back in time a bit, so that it is a few weeks or so behind the other cities. Given the slow pace that we want for the growing chaos, we would perhaps be held back by other, more action-packed threads that move more slowly. For instance, Iconoclast's ghouls aren't going to reach critical mass of chaos-causing for at least a week. Heck, probably the only thing he will do tomorrow is go to a few places and turn some people at each location, to test government response times and such.

And the rebellion will need some time to ferment and grow, they don't happen over night.

I know we could technically go past the other threads, but I'm not sure how willing we are to do that.

Thoughts?

I would rather not change the time frame in Corvallis, since we will have stuff up in the mean time.  If you want to RP Iconoclast getting ready, you can.  I'm still adjusting to the time thing, since on MBI, we can work in multiple scenes concurrently, and thus don't run into this problem.  I get that it would be expedient for his plotline to move Corvallis, but I'm hesitant to do so because of the complications that might arise, and because I want to give characters who are less battle focused a chance to get some good RPing in before the next huge assault.

If we just time hop from fight scene to fight scene, we miss a lot of the good bits :).

The way I'm thinking of him, he'd be more of a last-resort option. Someone to be dealt with only grudgingly, when there are few alternatives. Which seems to be the way Corvallis is heading, at the moment. (And of course, if Witness became a part of the story, he would do his part to push things to that point as well.) Not necessarily because he's hard to work with, (the Affably Evil trope would no doubt fit him to a tee) but rather because you know you'll always end up on the worse end of the deal.

As a Gifter, he would love that contract, as stated. ;) (He's going to weasel out of it somehow, regardless, but that particular statement, no matter how well refined, would be easy for him to get around.) The way his powers work, he couldn't instantly kill someone if they had a PI, or actually remove their abilities, but he could force them into a coma, or bind them to not use their powers. (His contracts let him control the parties involved, not warp reality.)

Maybe not visit other cities, per se, but he'll be certain to keep abreast of important events going on elsewhere in Oregon. (He has agents and emissaries in several locations of import, although they won't have made themselves known.)

That could work, although I like the idea of a sort of service-broker character. ...Of course, it could be interesting as well if he's just an observer, waiting, watching and subtly manipulating events until the time is right to strike a deal. (In which case I'd probably RP primarily as one of his bound servants, as they'd be capable of getting involved more.)

I think Rainmaker would use this epic, but cautiously.  She likely wouldn't enter into any contracts herself, and use proxies instead.  I'm guessing she would use his power sparingly, and only in situations when it would come in handy (such as restraining rebellious epics from causing trouble), and would avoid using it on the large scale at all costs.

One note, do the bargains have to be fair?  In law, generally the courts will not inquire into the adequacy of consideration, unless there is some sort of fraud or misrepresentation or the general purpose of the contract is frustrated.  So, as long as something is offered in exchange for something else, and that offer is accepted, the contract is binding.  So, even if I pay one dollar for the Mona Lisa, that contract is still binding, because consideration was offered by both sides.

Basically, my question boils down to what the limits on consideration are.  How fair does the bargain have to be, and how much can that be stretched?  Also, how do power dynamics play into the fairness.  For example, since Rainmaker is more powerful, would her doing a favour or making a personal offer be more valuable than if Brandon offered the same?

So once this part with Converter plays out, what would be a good way to introduce Heatsink? I was thinking to help with converter, but after, since he wasn't mentioned in those going to restrain her.

I'm still thinking about this, but I'm pretty sure Rainmaker could find fun uses for his power.

I'm pretty sure there's been like 10 new posts since I started typing this, so I may be back...

Can anyone give me context on the whole AMA thing? I don't reddit, and am not following this incredibly interesting conversation about the questions that are being asked and answered...

Also, on the point of the childrens, I wonder if we might see David and Megan get pregnant? In general, I'm guessing that epic-ness usually does not pass, since I don't see epics as genetically different from humans. I think they are being altered at a different level. So epic A would pass on her genes the same way she would if she had not been given super powers.

I think what Brandon may have been referring do with the children becoming epics is A) due to intervention by Calamity, or B) As someone else said, perhaps due to the breeding of redeemed epics, who have somehow made their powers more integral to their being.

He might also mean that a parent could pass down or instill through socialization personality traits that could make someone more likely to be an epic.

Wheew, that was a lot. Let me know if I missed anything! Sorry for the monster post!

It's right here! You make an account, ask a simple question, and he might give you an answer. It's still ongoing, with the last question answered about an hour ago. Even if, like me, you find Reddit as a whole to be a cesspool of filth and the worst kind of randomness, it's well worth the minute or so it takes to make an account to participate in this awesomeness. :D

And thanks for the Avatar review. I'm quite intrigued by this show now. :)

So current status of Miss Isle:

Epic Name: Miss Isle (derived from Homing Missile)

Power: Gets pulled towards whatever she's focusing on or just in the direction she's looking (if she wasn't focusing on anything). Speed determined by how well she can see the object and how far away it is. The closer it is, and the less clearly she can see it, the slower she goes. Closing her eyes lets her hover in place, and wearing sun glasses does almost the same thing (she'll still move slightly forwards, but if she's standing on the ground, she'll not notice the pull). This lets her do a Cyclops style thing where she can 'activate' her power by lifting her glasses. The pull it self acts as if every point on the surface of the object is pulling her towards it, meaning it centers her on the face of said object.

Age: Mid twenties

Appearance: Miss Isle's costume of choice includes a grey thigh-length dress that flares out, silver leggings, red Converses, a yellow cropped 3/4 length cardigan and a yellow bowler with a black band around the base. She has shoulder-length black hair, and has a pair of red-lensed aviators that she uses to help control her ability.

Any suggestions? How would I involve her in say Corvallis?

Posted

I'm having trouble finding things in the Reddit thread, and don't have time to stick around to ask questions. Anyone want to summarize the unique powers question and answer for me?

EDIT: As for Miss Isles: 1. I like her. 2. She could probably fit into Corvallis in pretty much any capacity. I think she would work best as a minor epic in Rainmaker's government, or as a neutral citizen.

Mailliw asked how many Epics have powers that are unique to them, like Firefight or Mitosis. Brandon answered:

Less than 10% are both unique and useful.

...indicating that most Epics share powers with one another. Mailliw also asked if any had unique but useless powers, and Brandon answered:

Happens fairly often.

Hope that clears it all up. :)

And Haelbarde, I don't think I've said this yet but Miss Isle is awesome. :D

@Coma: fair enough, that all makes sense :)

If Corvallis falls to Iconoclast, or if Iconoclast has a sizable role in its downfall, Vondra at least will mention it. He'll want to know everything there is to know about this guy, most importantly whether or not he's still alive, because that Epic could probably bring The Dalles down all by himself.

hmmm that is true, and I haven't decided if I want iconoclast to survive yet. I'm leaning no, but it all depends.

I'd say Epics like Funtimes, Voidgaze, Aldo, Cornucopia, and others more bend than break canon. wow that is cool! Go Brandon! :D

and you know, perhaps lots of our "unique" powers might have duplicates in other epics elsewhere anywhere on earth.

Well, that about confirms three-quarters of the Epics on Voidus' lists. :P

that is also awesome hahaha

id probably work out her personality, and who she would like and dislike. But sure, an intro post of her where she recalls being attacked by rioters (if she was one of the Epics corralling them) earlier and then escorted them home and is just returning, would work fine. Or anything like that. As long as it fits what has been seen by other characters and all, its fine :)

I was actually about to say the same thing. :P You could put Voidgaze and Shiny Sparkle in the "exploder" category, Aldo in the "shrinking and expanding" category, Funtimes in the "transmuter" category, and so on.

That's generally how it works out. A character's first post is usually meant to simply introduce the character, her powers, and her personality, with other interactions dealt with later on.

Wow, a lot happened.  What is the current planning situation, as I doubt I have time to read through 55+ pages.

So, in the event that people attack Icesteel Keep, I figure that I should have the minor Epics ironed out.  Most of them will be just there to put up a decent fight against any Epic that attacks.  Since this is Astoria, even powerful minor Epics are still easy to kill. So, I would love to hear your feedback on these guys and any other ideas you have of ones that I should implement.

Epics of Icesteel:

Labyrinth
Has the ability to make portals. Each portal can have a radius of fifteen feet. He can make up to ten portals at a time and can change the connections between them. It takes only a second to throw up a portal, but it takes a few seconds to dismiss one.
Weakness: 1:17 a.m. exactly. It lasts a minute.

Lens Flare
Causes people to be blinded at crucial moments. Also can make people pass over and not notice things.
Weakness: Physical blunt contact.

Bipolar
Can overload or block people's dopamine and serotonin receptors, making them either very depressed, very manic, or extremely happy and carefree. He can effect up to two people at a time and it takes fifteen seconds to recharge.
Weakness: Beer

Magnify
Can make any inorganic object bigger or small by three times. Can do this to up to three objects every ten seconds or so.
Weakness: Actual magnifying glasses

Shift
Can trade places with anyone in a hundred foot radius. Kinetic energy is transferred, so if he is running or falling it he will continue doing so when he comes back. He can detect people in that hundred foot radius. He has subtle spatial awareness. Not a massive amount, but enough to see what is going on in the places he potentially will teleport. He also has improved mental ability to be able to comprehend and understand all that he sees and know where to go.
Weakness: Brick walls

Empath
She can understand the intent of people when they perform actions. In messages, she understands if people are literal or sarcastic. She can understand what someone wants her to do by hand gestures, and can see through traps and feints.
Weakness: Baseball bats.

Tag
Can sense Epics nearby and identify their power base by sight.
Weakness: Epics within ten feet of him.

Nightstand

He doesn't require sleep. He also can see just as well at night as in the day time. He can gift the second power to up to four others but not the first.
Weakness: Trumpets

Origin: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/23845-how-did-epics-not-run-out-of-names/?p=241491

Fish
Has the ability to breathe underwater.
Weakness: Water?

Intel
Has the ability to create a three dimensional illusional layout of a mile radius area. He can hi-light and zoom in on anything in that area. His second power is the ability to make "mini maps" in people's vision that show objectives and friend or foe tags.
Weakness: Night-lights

Damage
Can blow himself up in a radius of up to ten feet. He respawns in the same place after thirty seconds and it takes another thirty seconds to recharge his power.
Weakness: Fire

Steel
Can speed up his own time for amount of extra speed he needs to have been slow for that much time (basically steel Feruchemy). Guns he uses never run out of bullets.
Weakness: Iron touching his skin.

Well, Florist was kind of left sitting in a pile of panda bodies, so if you catch up on that fight, you should be good for everything concerning your characters, I think.
