It'll be difficult to rework her fear into something that still gives us the Doctor we know. I have a few candidates—fear of her mother's abuse stands out—but since that doesn't quite fit I'm leaning toward handwaving. Unless I hit on something equally perfect as "fear of abandonment." 1
