Kasimir he/him Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 It's Darkened Blade by Kelly McCullough :/ A boy wants to follow in his father's footsteps, but when a career placement exercise goes terribly wrong, he finds himself doing a job no one wants to do and ends up saving the life of the guy who runs the career placement exercise.

The Giver? Edit: wait no that can't be it. Edited August 18, 2015 by Newan
Kasimir he/him Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Yeah, no. It's the first book of a series and it's set in a faux-medieval world that's low on magic. The boy is an orphan. He also doesn't actually know what his father's career was; he made a good guess but turns out to be wrong.
Pestis the Spider she/her Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 From A boy wants to follow... to ...low on magic I was absolutely sure it's The Way of Kings. xD But then the orphan thing happened.
Kasimir he/him Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 It is the first book of a series. While a Evil Sorcerer-type Big Bad is named, he is not directly encountered in this book; instead, the boy contends with his dreaded assassins. Also, when in doubt, set things on fire.
ThirdGen Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Harry Potter and the [Philosopher's/Sorcerer's] Stone?
Kasimir he/him Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Nope to both. A subplot concerns bullying: the boy begins to understand another boy who once pushed him around when he was younger, and eventually, they become friends.
Paragrin she/her Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Ranger's Apprentice series, The Ruins of Gorlan (I think). 1
Kasimir he/him Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Ranger's Apprentice series, The Ruins of Gorlan (I think). Yes! Yes!
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 How did I not get that?! I love that series! 1
Kasimir he/him Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 How did I not get that?! I love that series! I love it too! And...because it's a Bad Description?
Paragrin she/her Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Person develops abilities that makes blue light leak from their skin and allows them to mess with gravity.
ccstat he/him Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Oh! Oh! I know this one! Way of Kings! (Or maybe WoR, since the gravity stuff mostly happens there.)
Pestis the Spider she/her Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Well. Since the most obvious answer already appeared (honestly I also think it may be SA), I'll go with different one: Darker than Black. 1
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Wasn't there a Marvel Villain with that ability?
Robinski he/him Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Watchmen? It's so much more than that of course.
Young Bard he/him Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Ranger's Apprentice series, The Ruins of Gorlan (I think). I don't remember any magic being in that series at all... I read them a while ago, though, so I may be wrong. Anyway... Blue light and gravity manipulation... Yeah... on this forum, it could really only be one thing.
Paragrin she/her Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 ...No to all. Technically, it's not gravity (although the ways you can actually use it have me wondering). 1
ccstat he/him Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Fantastic four, maybe? That sounds like it could be Dr. Doom at a stretch.
phattemer Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 (edited) Elantris? NO I KNOW IT AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER!!!!!!!!! Edited August 23, 2015 by phattemer 2
Paragrin she/her Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Nobody's guessed the right medium yet. (Excluding tie-ins.)
ccstat he/him Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Not book, movie, TV, or comics? I am having a hard time thinking of a Broadway musical that fits your description. Must be oral history then? Claymation documentary?
