I might be able to install an app; is there a specific one or a specific company you'd recommend?

I love this so far! Are the night-Investiture-creatures specific to a biome, or are they everywhere? If they're Invested in the ways chasmfiends are Invested, then what they do in the day will probably vary depending on the biome. If they're Shade-style Invested (or pure Investiture), then they might end up dissipating into general Investiture soup during the day?

You need Steam and you have to buy it

If they all dissipate when it is day though, there'll be none left when it's night again. I say they go dormant instead

Also I just realised that this is the 3 Body Problem. That means all the orbit stuff I calculated is thrown out the window, because this is an unstable star system. Planets get thrown around between different stars and stuff. No orbits are stable.

Unless whatever Shard is here forces the system to not be chaotic and manually exerts force on all the stars and planets to keep them in line.

Unfortunately I don't have Steam, in which case I won't be of much use

I had another observation, which may be utterly wrong, but

Lots of sunlight = lots of evaporation of water = lots of precipitation

Lots of rain + lots of sun = good for plants, so a lot of plant growth

I had another theory, which was that if sunlight was Invested like on Taldain, and the plants required the sunlight to grow, then in the rare nights, they might seek out other sources of Investiture instead, which could be dangerous for people

Both of these are just suggestions!

I like that suggestion. Even if the "lots of rain" doesn't prove scientifically correct (I have no idea whether or not it is), we could just say Inv.(estiture) does that lol. Have you read The Sunlit Man? I think that may be relevant.

This is a good idea, but aren't the nights short? I don't think the plants would need a constant supply of Inv., right? The could survive a couple hours (or however long) without it? Unless they do. Maybe all life (humans includes) need it. So if they (humans & plants) constantly need Inv. to survive, then, yes, they would seek could use alternate sources of Inv.

@KaladinsSenseOfHumourSpren will there be any moons? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't moonlight (not the character lol) sunlight reflected off the moon? So would it still have any Investiture (if the sun(s) are the source of said Inv.)?

Edit: what if humans get their Inv. from the plants? (via consumption) Just an idea.

I have read the Sunlit Man; that could work!

I was thinking the plants-needing-other-sources would be if they required constant Investiture, but not if they didn't.

If humans got Investiture from plants, then they might have a slightly higher base rate of Investiture, like Nalthians seem to, so they might have a more easily accessible kind of Invested Art?

I really like the plant idea, because then we have somewhere for the monsters to go during the day.

However, during the night, a rare few "pruners" can use Investiture to destroy the plants. However, they are otherwise indestructible.

I'm not actually sure I like that MoI.

Mol?

Wait, are the Pruners humans? Are they the only Investiture users? Why would they want to destroy the plants? To keep them from getting "out of hand"? Why are they indestructible? Do they just heal very quickly? Or attack humans when they get to close (I suppose the opposite of what many Rosharen plants do.)

I need to roll for those.

There is a lot to roll for.

But first - since this is the 3-Body Problem, do we want a chaotic system, or Shard-enforced stability?

Firstly, I don't really know what 3-BP is, but that's irrelevant as long as you explain how "chaotic" the orbits are. Specifically, what will it look like on the surface? It might affect calendar stuff. Maybe - depending on how rare the nights are, and if they follow a set frequency/pattern - the people would base their "years" on the nights. Each night would mark the start/end of a year. Or they wouldn't even have years. And how about days? For example, on Roshar they have obvious days but also the three moons rising and setting. And the weeping marks new year.

Do you think it would help to have a simple program for that? What kind of "rolling" is it? Are you just clicking buttons on that Worldsmith site?

Edit: we could always just be boring and have one (or two) stars in the system.

CHAOTIC

Edit: we could always just be boring and have one (or two) stars in the system.

The night system doesn't actually work anymore

In the book, 3BP, an alien civ that lives in the Alpha Centauri system, a system with 3 stars, divides their calender in Chaotic Eras and Stable Eras. Changes cannot be predicted, due to Chaos theory. Stable Eras are periods of time when there is mild temperature since the planet is only close to one star; they can last anywhere between days and centuries, again, unpredictable. Chaotic Eras are when the planet is close to no stars, two stars, or three stars. The first means that the planet freezes, and the others mean that the surface of the planet melts.

Again, nothing is predictable. The aliens only survived because they can 'dehydrate', expel all water from their bodies and lay dormant for a really long time. Sometimes they remain frozen for millennia at a time.

My steps for generating planets:
1) Randomly generate (with random.org) how many planets of each type (big gas giants, ice giant-types, terrestrial). There are 2 big gas giants and 3 ice giants, I haven't rolled for terrestrials.

2) Roll randomly the mass of the planets (e.g. 0.2 to 13 Jupiters for big gas giants)

3) Use the 20 orbits that Worldsmith provided me, and pick one at random for the gas giant's orbit

Where the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt will be is going to be determined by where the gas giants are.

I could write a program for this... yeah I'll do that, but not now.

Ooh, thanks for the TIL. I'd never heard of that term, but that's basically what I've always wanted to do...

How do you guys want to do the structure?

I'm thinking object-verb-subject. What about verb conjugation?

OVS is interesting... I also like SOV

Definitely more than just sngular/plural, so we could have like singular, dual, trial, paucal, then plural.

For tense, I've had this idea where instead of it being an adfix for a verb, the tense is denoted by a separate word at the start of end of the sentence whose job it is to say the tense and perhaps aspect too.

What if we did a Tagolag entrefix?

I wonder... I actually like the beginning word idea, what if we had an entrefix denoting the evil/darkness? Maybe kind of specific, but what if that's the pronoun?

Here's what I'm thinking:

Denotifier-object-verb(prefix-pronoun/darkness-suffix)-subject.

I do not know what an entrefix is.

-fix in the middle

Ohhh

Also I just realised that nights aren't actually going to be very rare, since it'll be rare that the main planet is around more than one star for long.

So the nights are only slightly less common, and also very sporadic.

Also as soon as the civilisation can make starships they'll want to leave their star system, because there's a constant threat of being ejected from the system or being swallowed by one of the stars, or slamming into another planet.

They probably won't have unique names for each star, because most people will only ever see one in the sky (if there are two, the planet burns, so no one lives to tell the tale. Usually.) and the other two just look like shooting stars on Earth. Until their version of Copernicus comes around and figures it all out.

They'll have words for the 'shooting stars'. Two of them in the sky will become something like a good omen, as it means the planet is only around one star and has a nice temperature. One is very bad as it means the planet will burn. Three is very, very bad as it means the planet will freeze and it may be a while before it warms up.

Separate word tense makes everything so much better

Denoting the evil of the object or subject?

If it is tense-object-(plurality-evil-verb)-subject

I was thinking darkness of the subject (which is the pronoun).
