I've tried so many times to read them and books 1-5 feel like a slog and if that's a slog there's no way I'm making it through the actual slog... And have a bunch of issues about how they talk about women and it makes reading them really difficult... But the world and magic is super epic. WOT is a product of its time as my favorite book series ever behind LOTR, its all redeemed in the last 4 books which are some of the best things I've ever read and where it really modernized and stopped being weird. -- Janus knew men. He understood them in a way few others did, thanks to his father. His father had taught him rules for life. Know your men, know your metals, and know if your luck can be pushed. All three of these had saved his life on multiple occasions. Admittedly, he never thought he'd get to space. Space had always been unreachable to him, a poor boy from the Old Roughs. Now he was going to die in space. He sighed, flipping a coin. Heads, with the image of the Dawnshot carved into it. A special commission by a lord who had lost it in a game of dice with Janus. Blood of Shards, he thought. This was difficult. He was not an engineer, or a fighter. He was a gambler. He couldn't . . . he froze. Know your men. The first rule. He knew men and how they acted, behaved and lied. He was especially good at seeing through the lies. Maybe . . . maybe he could help save the ship, before the TYRIAN fell. I dont disagree with it being a product of it's time... as everything is... but I dont really think that makes it better in modern context. Spoiler I also think it shouldn't be difficult for people 20 years ago to realize its weird and kinda creepy to have kids thinking about spanking their female friends (sometimes older friends) when they do something they don't like. Thats just the most obvious example and the thing I have the hardest time getting past. For the record, I dont judge anyone who is able to read it or enjoys it. The incredible world and magic system kept me working at reading the books despite my issues with them... but I could list dozens of book series' that came out at the same time or earlier that dont treat women anywhere nearly as bad (especially ones written by women but also ones written by men) so its not like people couldnt or didnt do better... or didnt have examples of what better could be. The last 4 books are the reason I started trying to read it but I just read Wikipedia articles and summaries of the books so I could know the world/lore better and im feeling pretty content now. edit: I find it funny you basically say it stopped being weird when Brandon took over... which i very much believe xD. I was actually wondering that when i was trying to read the books xD Edited January 2 by Furamirionind 2
Through the Living Hopper He/Him Posted January 2 Posted January 2 13 hours ago, Ashbringer said: Ara gritted her teeth as the signal stopped, then began running again. This was an intercom, not a two-way communicator, which meant she had to listen the hard way - by listening to everything. Which was, of course, impossible, but impossibilities were her and Faleast's specialty. At least, they used to be. She tapped into one of the few powers she could carry with her wherever they went, the capability of sense. Something she'd won through blood, and used through bile. Tin magnified a hundred thousand times over. Despite all the experience - all the countless, forced experience - this was something she was bad at. With it, she could hear everything happening in the ship. Engines, conversations, explosions - not yet - and countless else. She could hear it all. Deciphering it without going mad was another story. Well, she may very well be mad already. Faleast certainly was. Make him do it. "Do you mind?" she whispered, aloud this time, pointing at the light. "He said, 'Me? Running? What does that mean?' " Faleast's voice whispered inside her skull. Storming steel, she did miss working together. As one Twinmind. But this would do. Let him pretend. He'd gotten good at it. But AraRaash was born for it. "Hmm. Get his responses, I'll see if I can get him on an actual comm," she said, pinging up the next few locations before sending the intercom to the running one. Still multiple intercoms, in multiple rooms. "Running means... not walking... moving fast... with purpose. Mine is... too keep... the ship breathing... What... is yours?" Then, just for good measure, she queued in a command to shut a door a hundred or so feet ahead. That could get her in trouble with the Captain, if those other lights were people coming in. Some people had good reason to head to the engine room in an emergency, after all. Many of them in a hurry. But, eh, she'd gotten in trouble with captains before. The cold vacuum of space might be nice this time of year. Rusts. Jmes stopped, feet awayfrom the closed door. "P-purpose? I-I don't know what you m-mean. I need to g-get to th-the engine room. K-kindly l-let me through."
TwinStorm He/Him Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Janus moved through the engine room. He wasn't doing this for himself. He had a brother, younger than him, also a gambler. A bad one though. Not like him. They had won a trip on the TYRIAN, and he needed to save him. Now he was just waiting. If a saboteur entered, he would know. A gamble, but won he would take. No movement. He rested his head against the wall, twirling his coin between his fingers. If anyone came in, pull the alarm, tackle them. Ask questions later. No movement. He leaned back, stretching. How long had he been there? An hour? Two? It must be at least two. No movement. He started getting restless, tapping his fingers against a tank. No movement. He got up, popping his shoulder. He dropped his coin and burned iron, Pulling it idly up to his chest. No movement. He glanced around. The shadows stretched across the room, and the only light was the pulsing of the control board. No movement. He looked up. The shadows were deepest in the corner where . . . Movement. A dropped coin. He jumped to his feet, but the shadows moved. A shape dropped. He instinctively Pulled on the coin, but the shadow, the man, moved first. The coin shot at him, faster than he anticipated. He staggered, glancing at his chest. Blood. Blood on his chest. Blood of Adonalsium . . . He looked up at the shape, who had started towards the control board. I'm sorry, brother, he thought. 1

"Kindly grab the communicator from the side panel, it should be blinking for you," Ara said through the intercom, finally unbroken. That would let them talk without needing UberTin or Faleast. It would have been nice to keep Faleast busy, but that wouldn't make sense if they were working together. "What I mean by purpose? The oldest question. This ship's engines were attacked, disabled, and there should be a security team in there trying to get them restarted. That's when you started running for that area." True enough. She was pretty sure someone was in the engine room, but there was a malfunction of zephyr spore engines, which messed with her usual way of detecting how many individuals were there. "I'm Lieutenant Ara of the Life Support Deck. What is your name? And you say you need to get to the engines. Why? Why should I-" 9 hours ago, TwinStorm said: He staggered, glancing at his chest. Something changed with the airflow in the engine room. It was a zephyr engine, of course. Hard to tell what was happening there. But had someone just died? 1
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) Greetings everyone! This game will begin in exactly 24 hours! We currently have 19 players signed, with 5 Pinch-Hitters waiting in the wings. Sign-ups are still open, and will remain open until we close them. Everyone who has signed up already has been sent a PM with the Log-In details of the anonymous Account assigned to them. If you have not received a PM, it means you have not signed up. PM @The Unknown Ookla or myself as soon as possible to fix this error, or you might not get to play! The Spectator/Dead doc is currently open, and we're discussing Role Distribution in it at the moment. If you are not playing, and would like to offer your thoughts or peek behind the curtain, please reach out and ask us for a link. I've loved all the RP that has been happening in this thread so far, thank you all for making this a lively sign-up process! EDIT: with 14 hours to spare, we have reached 20 players, but also been forced to reduce our maximum player count to 29, as the Turquoise Gorilla account seems to be broken and unusable. But it doesn't seem like we're going to reach 30 players anyway, so, meh? Edited January 4 by A Jo in the Bush 5
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted January 4 Posted January 4 With exactly an hour left before game begins, Roles and alignments are going to start being sent out. SIGN-UPS ARE STILL OPEN. If you haven't managed to log in to your Anonymous Accounts, please figure out how to do so.
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted January 4 Posted January 4 SIGN-UPS ARE NOW CLOSED. Stand by for Game Start If anyone knows how to automate Kandra or Mistborn in a spreadsheet, you should download this Cleaned-Up copy of the Spreadsheet and try to figure it out and teach it to me. Pretty please.
