Aren't Aons related to the local geography? So how did Hoid and Riina use them in Tress? Did they change them to match? In the Howard Lyon artwork (which may not be accurate/canon), they use unchanged Aons:

However, it is incredibly difficult to combine or convert Aons with other types of Investiture. This is speculated to be because Aons rely so heavily on geography for their power, and would therefore have to be completely recreated in order to be used anywhere other than Arelon and surrounding areas.

Probably the same thing that gives lets them access the Dor at all far from Elantris.

Well, I was assuming that you just need to change Aons to the geography of wherever you are.

Maybe, but the Wiki seems to suggest that it is extremely difficult to do so (which may not be an issue for Hoid, since he is Hoid), but also the Howard Lyon artwork suggests that the Aons were unchanged (although it may not be accurate).

What do you mean? Don't they use those jars of Dor? If they could use the Dor far from Elantris (but still on Sel), wouldn't they still need to change the Aons?

A quote from The Lost Metal (Book 4 of Mistborn Era 2)

Spoiler
Quote

Ch 54:

Context: Moonlight has transformed into an Elantrian, and is sketching an aon too "stabilize"

"It looked a little like the map--a quick sketch of the Basin, but with a strange rune in the center" (I assume is referring to an Aon)

So, I guess the Howard Lyon Aon's are probably inaccurate, and in-book they changed them to fit the local geography on Lumar (which would be, what, a tiny island surrounded by sea?)

Nice job on the quote.

Thanks. (it took me so long to comb through my Lost Metal book to find that part T^T)

Yeah, I get that.

There was a map of Lumar on the floor so Riina probably did the same trick that Moonlight did in TLM. And yes, the art is not accurate:

Kalobi

Should the fact that the Aons in the Hoid/Riina painting are missing the chasm line be taken as canonical? If so, is this because of whatever method they are using to perform AonDor outside Sel? Or because of post-Elantris changes to Sel?

Brandon Sanderson

We let Howard pick what he wanted to illustrate, and then send illustrations in. And originally, he just did a whole bunch of weird, arcane symbols. And I’m like, “No, you need to actually use Aons in this art.” But we let him just kind of pick the Aons. You should not consider that art to necessarily be… Imagine that art to be somebody on Silverlight painting a picture of a story they heard. That art can be in-universe. (In fact, I believe that I would consider it in-universe.) But somebody painted it, and they just used whatever pictures of Aons they had sitting around, like Howard did. In other words, don’t be looking at those Aons as actual representations of how you would program in AonDor, how about that. And don’t read too much into that.
