When a mommy fish and a daddy fish love each other VERY much…

Aria looked distinctly uncomfortable, focusing intently on the platypus. She wondered if it could be trained.

It finished the worm and made a noise. It was a noise that a normal platypus would make.

After getting poked, it decided it didn't like that very much and walked back to the pool.

It was now swimming around. Unfortunately, there was no otter for it to play with.

"8 billion."

Aria didn’t look away from the platypus, but her eyes widened and she whistled softly.

Aniya looked uncomfortable as well, although she made sure to keep it vague.

She chuckled.

The platypus was, after all, a truly terrifying teacher. Especially as it swam laps on its back.

"Basically, we split everything up into smaller and smaller groups and then count how many people are in each group."

"But what if you miss people?"

Covia turned to Aria. "What about you? How many people are there where you come from?"

She shrugged. "I don't know. I guess that's the government's problem. But there's also birth and death records they can look at."

“No one really keeps track,” Aria said thoughtfully. “There are a scattering of labs and…similar places. Lots of nomads that pass through different buildings. Families, but that doesn’t mean blood connection as much as it does alliances. No one likes to talk about it, but we’re a dying people.”

"It's 3 to the power of 9. That's how the Sanctuary is subdivided, anyway, 3 groups of 3 groups of 3... and so on."

"Oh. So when your people die, they just..." She trailed off, looking concerned.

"Hm, interesting."

She looked away sadly.

“Maybe. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it. A lot of girls are born sterile, and a lot of people have made the choice not to bring children into a world with so much hurt. Eventually, the labs will wither and die. All that’ll be left is the nomads and a tired planet. Maybe they’ll be able to fix it. Or maybe they’ll escape it.”

Aria pursed her lips. How much should they know? He wouldn’t kill them, probably, unless they knew. Maybe he’d kill them anyway. “It’s weird to have to explain. I’m following someone, someone who works for one of the…labs.”

Covia watched and listened, still staying mostly submerged in the water, now including her mouth and nose. Breathing felt more comfortable to her this way.

“No, it…I don’t work for anyone,” Aria said. “But it might put you in danger. He’s a killer. More machine than human. If he succeeds, then he’ll be the first of a new product, one that will ruin our world and, apparently, spread to others. He’s to efficient to kill people who don’t matter, but if you know about him, he won’t have a problem destroying you.”
