Piltzintecuhtli watched from above. Joseph had been a mistake; but perhaps this man would be different. He seemed to be more ruthless, for one. Maybe he would understand what was necessary.

As with Joseph, Piltzintecuhtli pushed a sliver of himself into Eclipse, and they were in the vision of the pool. The shallow water stretched infinitely in all directions, and the two men were ankle-deep.

”Eclipse (fancy last name), you have been chosen.”

Eclipse gasped and looked around, startled.

He doesn't look at the god but bows his head. "What do you want great god?"

She closed the dumpster. "I was at school when the monsters came. Me and Brielle hid in the janitor's closet for a long time. When we came out, everybody was gone. So we both walked home together, and when we got back to our apartments, it was really late, like ten o'clock or something. Everything was in a big mess when we got back. And Dad wasn't there. I tried calling him on the emergency phone, but he's not answering. So I grabbed some stuff and moved it to the trash. Then I started looking for someone to help."

He nodded. “Can you take me to the apartment?”

“Yes.”

He wasn’t exactly sure if it would be worth it, but…. He just needed to be doing something. He needed a purpose, a mission.

"Okay," she said. "You have to sign my contract before I take you to my house."

She pulled out a piece of paper written in nearly illegible handwriting. Nearly.

Saving Dad Contract

1. You will help me find my dad and I'll give you a reward.

2. You will not hurt me or my dad. We won't hurt you either.

3. No tricks!!!!!!!

If you break any of these rules, then I have full right to shoot you with my nerf gun. And also you don't get any rewards.

"Sign here," she said, pointing to a line directly below her name.

Piltzintecuhtli smiled. This was already going well.

“Two weeks ago, this stone was broken, and the deities of the world were released.” Piltzintecuhtli went through the routine. The stone appeared and cracked. The threads of light, weaving through their legs. And the channel of force, blasting straight up, illuminating the sky with the light of the gods. The lights appeared in the void, each one a wonder into itself.

”The world changed that day.”

"Okay," she said, shoving the pen and the document in her back pocket. "Follow me."

Piltzintecuhtli sighed. It was back to the drawing board, then.

”Very well. I cannot force you. I can only urge you to keep this with you.” He handed Joseph a stone whistle, with an engraving of a mushroom on it. “If you ever change your mind or need me, blow it.” Even after Piltzintecuhtli ceased to project himself to Joseph, the whistle would stay behind. As he began to fade, he left one final message.

”Know that you could have been this world’s savior.”

He shrugs "That was weird." and goes to the police to report a supernatural sighting.

"So that's how it happened." Eclipse notes, sounding a lot less awestruck than before. "What do we do now?"

The scene changed. The pair stood suspended in the night sky; far below them glittered the lights of Mexico City. Suddenly, the earth began to shake. The lights in the city went out, and it was only by star and moonlight that they watched as the the landscape began to collapse, then pull itself together. A massive form, greater than the land itself, began to rise. And it roared.

“Long ago, Tlaltecuhtli - our Lord of the Earth - gave his godly life to create the land you see before you. For centuries, Tlaltecuhtli was kept sated by human blood and sacrifice. But now, she has awakened with a new appetite.” Piltzintecuhtli turned to Eclipse. “With your help, I seek to stop her before she destroys this world.”

“In order to sate Tlaltecuhtli’s bloodlust, a special ritual sacrifice must be conducted upon a temple in her domain.” He hesitated, then dropped the main part. He had to know this man could commit. “The ritual does involve some… homicidal behavior. But if we succeed, it will be for the good of all mankind.”

“The victims must be slain on the temple and dismembered, just like the Lord. Only then will their blood reach her.”

Piltzintecuhtli breathed a sigh of relief. The man was reluctant, but accepted. Maybe this was the one.

”Yes, in fact. The sacrifices must be prisoners of war. Only then will the blood be right…”
