As we know from Dawnshard, Larkins are 'off world' creatures. They didn't originate from Roshar. We also know that larkins are practically immortal, unless they are killed. They can fly, and they have a similar structure and scales of dragons. They are also sentient and can fly. I get the feeling they are dragons. This might just be a theory, but its a cool one.

Wait, what?

It's been a while since I last re-read Dawnshard, but AFAICR, larkins are indeed native to Roshar, being a kind of greatshell that have to bond to a mandra (luckspren) at some point of their life cycle to be able to continue to grow -- and for lanceryn/larkin, it had to be one that only exists on Aimia, the "scouring" of which is the primary reason larkins are both so rare now and have also stayed small. (And which Rysn's larkin "Chiri-Chiri" is the first larkin to come back and do in quite a long time.)

You are going to have to Source your information here - we have no indications that Larkins didn't originate on Roshar. In fact, because they have Gemhearts and require a Nahel Bond to grow, the indications that they are native to Roshar is strong. Is it possible you are thinking of the Sleepless? We know that they are not native to Roshar, and the original Sleepless on Roshar when they first arrived (and those still on other planets) are much more spider-like.

They are not native to Roshar and yet they fit among the Rosharan cremlings so perfectly... So was Rosharan fauna based off of another planet? Or are the crab species on Roshar invasive and from wherever the Sleepless are from? Or are only Rosharan sSleepless made up of crabs because they melded with the local species? Or do living things in the Cosmere evolve into crabs alarmingly often just like in our universe and its a coincidence?

Brandon Sanderson

The ones on other planets will look less like cremlings. Realize that a swarm is always evolving. The first swarm's hordelings were more spider-like when it first came to Roshar.

The theme of generations is also a thing we see with the Kandra, who can also disguise themselves. Were the Kandra perhaps modeled after the Sleepless? Or is there any relation at all between the two?

Brandon Sanderson

No direct relationship here.

Phantine

Was Aimia originally terraformed to be more like their home ecosystem (just like how Shinovar is like the human home ecosystem)?

Larkins are not Dragons - but they were inspired by them:

Brandon Sanderson

Those are not dragons. Those are little beasties from the world. You’ve seen them before.

Larkin?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. But you can call them "dragon bugs" if you want, that’s what Isaac called them when I described them.

Questioner

So are they just from the world, or do they have any over-reaching signif--

Brandon Sanderson

Well they have a certain ability that you may have seen in-world, which is pretty distinctive and different, and so they have a lot of mythological import. They are not widely known by most cultures right now.

Is Chiri-Chiri's kind descended from Yolen dragons?

For what it's worth, Isles of Emberdark looks ready to give us a more detailed look at the dragon life cycle, if the preview chapters are any indication, so we should know more soon on the Dragon side of the question when that get's published.  If you're interested and dont mind that kind of spoiler you should check those chapters out.
