"Well, because it lets us rest and reset our bodies."

Lati didn't want Jidah to die!

". . . You should sleep."

Jidah snorted. “I don’t have to sleep. I’m immortal.”

"Teleport."

She looked over at 209485. @Hoid Slayer

209845 finished coming to its senses. Chaos, sleep, teleporting… Wait…

”NO! The Cloud has put up a barrier around this chamber. If you try something like that, anything could happen.”

Of course, 209845 didn’t know how Jidah’s teleportation actually worked… maybe the barrier would just scramble their aim. Or maybe it would set off an anti-atomic reaction, scrambling their essence across the expanse of the Web.

She shot back, but was relieved that it worked.

"Wait, we're stuck!? No! We can't be stuck!"

“There might be a way to get out… but it would be risky.”

"JIDAH NEEDS TO SLEEP," she yelled at him suddenly, "OR SHE'LL DIE!"

”Is that so?” It looked at Jidah pointedly.

"MHM! YEAH SHE SAID SO- YOU SHOULD MAKE HER SLEEP!"

Lati didn't really know why she was being so loud.

But she also didn't really care all that much.

She yelled a little more 'cus she wanted to.

“All right, what’s your way? Also, what kind of a barrier? I’m very good at stretching holes in barriers. Usually with paradoxes.”

"The barrier is in the Web, not physical. Think of it as a... firewall. As for my way..."

209845 hesitated. Was this really a step it was willing to take? So far, all it had done was run from its people. But it wasn't directly opposing them; everything it did was in the best interests of the Cloud. It truly believed that. And it didn't regret what it had done. But this... this was a line it was scared to cross.

It thought through what it had done so far. It would already be reset; what was a little more? Something. It was something.

But for this cause...

209845 looked around. Life. Glorious, flawed, emotional life. This planet teemed with life. And that might be something worth fighting for.

Perhaps this was why mortals seemed to be so broken. They were constantly faced with choice. They could not view the world through an objective eye, recognize a value to be greater than another. But what if that eye... did not see all it thought it did. The Cloud... there were things it did not see. Or maybe it did see them, and didn't feel it prudent to share all it knew. Maybe that deception was the wiser option. The option that ushered more value.

Characteristic of the Cloud. Always doling out knowledge, power, without thinking of the individual. Thinking only of the greater good. Maybe that supremacy was the wiser option. The option that ushered more value.

They were choices. Objective, made by an all-seeing entity. But 209845 couldn't agree with them.

Standing there, looking around, it saw not with an omniscient eye but with a touched heart.

And so it made it's own choice.

"The only way through the barrier is with the authorization of a Cloud agent. With my broken connection..." 209845 poked at it, but the fog didn't budge. Dazh had done his job well. "I cannot play that part in this form. But in the form of another..." 209845's gaze moved from the people around it, to the walls of the chamber, beyond which the Cloud lay. Waiting. "I can get the job done."

NOTE: I often refer to 209845 doing things such as sighing or having a heart or brain. It does not. That's just the easiest way to communicate the way it is feeling.

And yes, it DOES feel. That it does do, miraculously. Astonishingly. Blessedly.

"For now, it is okay, but Jidah has a point. As we near the barrier, the Cloud will be listening for unusual activity. We do not want to doom ourselves like that."

“We’ll be your friends,” Jidah offered. “I don’t doubt I could get through a firewall at full strength, but drawing on an external power source, I’m not sure how much I could do… I’ll stay here, connected. Until you escape. Then I’ll join you, if you or Lati agree to bond me.”
