Jidah grew suspicious.

“I believe so… there was somebody matching that description earlier, heading that direction.” She pointed the wrong way. “Why do you ask?”

"They seem to have gotten away from me. They're... very troubled."

“Are you their father, then?”

"No. But I am the nearest they have to a parent."

“Weird. What are you, then?”

"You could call me their guardian. Now, you said you've seen them? Why did you point in the direction I came from? I'm sure we didn't cross paths."

I'm assuming that's where she pointed because that's kind of the only wrong direction in a tunnel

A few moments later, a figure came into view. It was a elderly man, with pale skin and gray hair. He wore a worn-looking traveling cloak over simple but well-fitted attire, along with sturdy old leather shoes. He also used an ornate metal cane, surface worked with intricate geometric patterns. It became apparent that that was the source of the scraping as he steadily walked toward them. He was quite thin, but his upright posture and stern expression defied any notion of fragility.

He surveyed them with sharp, dark eyes, taking in Sigismund's posture and Jidah's weapon calmly. He spoke with a slightly raspy voice that, while soft, conveyed an authority that demanded to be heard. "Now, now. There won't be a need for any of that, you three."

"Oh, heya! Who are you?"

"Who I am is not very important. I do have a pressing question, though. Have any of you come across a... lost young adult? Dark hair, light clothing, olive skin." He looked at them intently, clearly expecting that they had and would tell him so.

"Uh . . . dunno."

Despite her invisibility, the old man looked at where she was when she spoke, not seeming surprised or confused like some others had.

This was nothing new to Lati. People usually looked in her general direction when she spoke.

His eyes will also sometimes follow her when she moves, though I don't know if she's had an opportunity to see that

I imagine there’s at least one more branch where they are

She tilted her head. “I don’t think I did… perhaps there were offshoots— I saw several.”

Not yet, no

I've been imagining these tunnels as pretty tight spaces :P

Actually, the tunnels you’re in right now were meant as sort of roads, so they’re quite roomy 😋

"Hm. And where are you headed?"

“We’re not sure. Why did your kid run away? Do they do it often?”

Meanwhile, back at the temple…

209845 turned from Réva, to 17, and back. They were both suffering… 17 needed help, but was afraid to accept it. Réva wanted to help, but wasn’t forceful enough. Very well. If mortals insisted on behaving so weirdly, then they would have to suffer the consequences of having someone make the decisions for them.

”I said we are GOING.” 209845 turned to 17. “And you’re staying with us. Until you tell me more about these ‘Makers’, there is no chance I will allow you to return to them knowing my location.” It gestured up the stairs. “Let’s GO.”

"We're off to meet up with the main party again," Sigismund stated. "I do recall the person you describe. They seemed to regret their decision to leave. But, I must inquire, are you a scientist of sorts? Because your acquaintance mentioned some kind of testing. I have met many scientists in my lifetime, and not all of them have been with good intention..."

"I assure you, I have only the best intentions for my ward."

17 frowned at 209845, then looked back at Réva. "Yeah."
