Kelsierspren Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 I was thinking. Odium, Honor, and Cultivation all have spren, and they are all completely different shards. Would this mean that other Shards like Honor and Autonomy could also have their own spren? And would this mean that Sazed could actually make Ruinspren Preservationspren and Honorspren? 1
Quantus he/him Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 (edited) Yes, barring perhaps something specific about a Shard's Intent that might prevent it from carving off a chunk of their own power or granting it sapience (which we dont have an example of but is theoretically possible). Per WOB Seons and Skaze are essentially Spren from Sel made when D&D were Shattered, and Nightblood is considered a Robot Spren created using Endowments Power (with a Lot of Ruin in the mix for unexplained reasons that we think is from the Destroy part of his Command). That being said, Spren born to other worlds will most likely have different functional traits than Rosharan Spren since they wouldnt have the same Realmic Investiture water cycle. So for example another shards' spren made on Sel might manifest more like Seons or Skaze, while if that same Shard moved to and Invested in Roshar it could manifest more like Spren. In the same way that Magic Systems arise from interactions between the Shards and the Planet's population, etc and not purely the Shard. Edited January 8, 2025 by Quantus 4

Yes and we've actually seen those spren in Elantris and Yumi - Seons, Skaze and Spirits. Spren are Splinters - an autonomous part of the Shard that was Splintered and separated from the Shard, becoming self-aware. Splinters can be created by accident during the death of the Shard (Splintering) and Seons and Skaze were created like that, or the Shard can deliberately self-Splinter part of themselves to create Splinters - like Spren were made. If there is free investiture that investiture can become self-aware on its own and would become a Splinter, even without the involvement of any Shard. So there are multiple ways of creating Splinters and Harmony can create their own Splinters if he want to, but right now, there are no Splinters on Scadrial. Spoiler Questioner Why do spren appear on Roshar and nowhere else? Brandon Sanderson They do, but they're in different shapes. Seons are the same thing that spren are, for instance. So there are places where you will see them, it just is going to depend on how the worldbuilding is built and how the magic is channeled and things like that. Orem signing (March 10, 2018) Spoiler Questioner Is there a specific Shard that most of the spren come from? Brandon Sanderson Most of the spren are going to be related to a combination of Honor and Cultivation, weighted certain directions for certain types of spren. But the spren are mostly both of them. Questioner Are they considered Splinters? Brandon Sanderson Yes, you could call spren Splinters if you wanted to. They work in the same way as a Splinter, so yeah. LTUE 2020 (Feb. 15, 2020) Spoiler Catherine Does the metal on [Scadrial] contain within it any sort of spren-like being, or anything similar to that, and also, does the Splintered nature of the Shards on [Sel] have anything to do with how the magic manifests itself without a physical representation? Brandon Sanderson Scadrial did not have an analogous, self-aware Invested set of entities. The power has to be "let go of" in a way. Goodreads: Ask the Author Q&A (Aug. 13, 2014) Spoiler [...] Brandon Sanderson A Splinter is a piece of a Shard that is fully autonomous, where an avatar is not. So something that is Splintered does not consider itself - and would not be considered by the definitions - an actual piece of it [the Shard], and has free will. So once it has free will, and/or could develop free will (because some of the Splinters haven't gotten there yet), but is fully cut off from the direct control and self-identity of the Shard, then it is called a Splinter.
