Vasher does use the trick and he doesn't skip a beat.

I forgot about that, never mind.

Further I don't believe for a second that getting rid of the breath and then reloading quickly after that would cause the same shock any more than your eyes needing to readjust to the light after closing them for a few seconds. But for someone who has never experienced that it would absolutely overload their system. Like a frog in a pot of water....

I don't think it would have the same shock, but I do think that it would have a lesser one. I agree with your assessment of closing your eyes for a few seconds. It would have a minor effect. Certainly not to the same level that doing it to someone who had never experienced it (which I don't include the Heralds in, as per Alder's point about type of Investiture not mattering, and them being incredibly Invested), but it would have some effect. When I close my eyes for a few seconds outside, I don't instantly adjust, it does take me another couple seconds after opening my eyes.

Edit: I love your profile picture by the way!

thank you!

From Coppermind:

The Ninth Heightening also grants Audible Command, the ability to Awaken objects that they are not physically touching, but that are within the sound of their voice

If it's within sound of their voice, couldn't Jezrien create a vacuum, as we know windrunners can do and prevent the voice from going anywhere? Heralds don't need to breath, Stormlight sustains them, and it (might) prevent the distant transfer of Breaths.

Spoiler

Questioner

Could a Windrunner in Shardplate travel to other planets?

Brandon Sanderson

Uh, theoretically possible. Take a long time.

Questioner

Yes, it would. 'Cause he wouldn't need to breathe, if he's got enough Stormlight.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, well, I mean, they can control pressure, so. You'd need oxygen scrubbers, but they can also, so... you can create a ball of air around yourself with their power anyway, so--

Oathbringer release party (Nov. 13, 2017)

That's one of the WOBs talking about windrunners controlling pressure, there's plenty more if you want to check.

That would do it. Even better, create a vacuum around Scholars which would kill them almost instantly.

Would their Investiture protect them, or is that a Stormlight-specific thing?

That's Stormlight healing. Scholars don't have any of this, Divine Breaths don't heal.

Every type of investiture grants effects comparable to Heightenings. Just holding a ton of Stormlight would provide them with perfect pitch, color recognition, life sense etc and that's without mentioning their own innate investiture which is way greater than a Divine Breath. Giving Heralds Breaths wouldn't cause any sensual ecstasy because they already have investiture that gives them this.

From Rysn's observations in the epilogue, it seems like she has a lot of the same aspects of a Fifth Heightening/Returned at the least. Is this because her Dawnshard is particularly connected to Endowment or because the effects of a certain level of Investment result in similar effects?

Brandon Sanderson

The latter.

Skrimyt

Interesting. So are actively Surgebinding Radiants or metal-burning Allomancers just not Invested enough to gain those passive effects, or do they not experience perfect pitch/color/etc. because their Investiture is just not as tightly bound to their Spiritweb as Endowment's Breaths or a Dawnshard would be?

Brandon Sanderson

Be aware that the two groups you mention don't generally hold much Investiture themselves, at least not in large quantities over time. More in Surgebinding. Almost none in Allomancy.

But RAFO to specifics.

Dawnshard Annotations Reddit Q&A (Nov. 6, 2020)

So is it new cannon or mentioned anywhere at all that a Herold or other invested being has life sense and the ability to sense the world in a way that is so central to Awakenings existence? Maybe I missed it but I don't recall a single PoV from anyone other than those with biochromatic breaths sensing the innate investiture and very life of the grass and everything organic around them. Add in the 7th heightening and it is static investiture as well! I'm not saying it is impossible. If there is a quote from any non biochromatic breath holder describing sensing the world around them in that way (I would exclude dawnshards as well)... to the point of knowing when someone is looking just at them vs past them... I will gladly concede the whole point.

Until then I have to think of acquiring this specific sense as having the same profound effect on anyone who existed without it to someone born blind and then suddenly being able to see in noon day. I don't care how invested anyone is... being able to see for the first time ever is going to cause you to skip a few beats.

The WoB itself confirms it, we also have Rysn in Dawnshard epilogue experiencing those effects, Riino in OB (who as an Elantrian sensed Kaladin watching him from the window) confusing Kaladin Bond with Heightenings and The Sunlit Man stating any investiture gives Heightenings just like that, among other enhancements given by investiture.

Storms. Was it her, or did this tea taste extra good? She inspected it, then glanced at the sunlight pouring through the porthole. Was it . . . brighter than usual? Why did the colors in her room look so exceptionally vivid all of a sudden?
[...]
Rysn’s eyes flicked to a purple hordeling hiding on the wall, near where it met the ceiling, shadowed. Strange, how she saw the contrast of shadows much more starkly now. And . . . why did Drlwan’s voice sound more musical?

OB ch 97:

How? Impossible. Unless … you’re Invested. What Heightening are you?” He squinted at Kaladin. “No. Something else. Merciful Domi … A Surgebinder? It has begun again?”

TSM ch 24:

Hmmm Aux said. I’d guess around two hundred BEUs in this one. Far less than what powers a full ship. Still, on a lot of planets, that would be a wealth of Investiture. Enough to reach the Second Heightening, and here it’s used for simple locomotion.

I think Riino's experience is the only one close. The vivid world I give. I won't argue it anymore though.

Sadly for Warbreaker and awakeners, the most fascinating parts of that system are passively handed to others in the cosmere with such little regard for them that they aren't even named or discussed beyond a single passage.

I concede it and am left to wonder how the Heralds haven't ended their war yet. Trapped in an endless hellscape where it is only in the necessity for story writing that they are still fighting the same fight 6000 years later.

With surges that can insta 1 shot an entire planet being direct conduits with the Spiritual Realm and the fact that they can't manage to get it together enough to end the Final desolation.

How is it that they need to raise armies at all?  Simply sever connection to life of all the entities you deem unworthy of existance. Simply soulcast the entire fused army into smoke and nuke those around them. Vacuum seal the whole of Roshar and call it a good day.

It is the fuel of my hatred for the Stormlight Archives. The reason I can't read more than I have. Rool of cool goes to far with power creep and the entire plot becomes pointless.
