Consequences of the Everstorm

The flooding due to the Highstorms is gone. This will drastically alter ecosystems. Riverbeds will no longer be swept clean of sediments.

The Purelake will no longer periodically fall dry. This will allow fish not adapted to that to live in it.

The amount of sunlight will be reduced due to a permanent cloud cover. Again plant communities will be hit hard.

All the adaptions to the Highstorm are now energetic liabilities. Mammals will have it much easier.

No more crem. Most plants are adapted to the nutrients it carries.

Rainfall is no longer in dramatic bursts. Many more rivers will become permanent. Roshar will need a lot of bridges. Some rivers will become navigable.

On the other hand,  Retribution probably has a LOT of power to alter the ecosystem in reasonable ways,  so he can probably mitigate most of the damage.  the interesting question is what that will mean for regions not under his control...

It looked to me like he welcomed catastrophic consequences of his actions, so that farming would require the methods the Singers have been using, just with Warlight. The same obviously applies to Soulcasting.

Pray to him or starve. Classical hydraulic despotism transfered to Investiture.

OTOH it is going to make Azish crops extremely valuable since they’re the only nation to get sunlight

Not really. They are landlocked. How much food can you ship in carts drawn by chulls? They cannot feed a whole planet. In fact they will have to fend of refugees at spearpoint quite soon, if darkness stops farming elsewhere.

A look at history is quite useful at that regard.

For example, why did admiral Villeneuve set sails and left port leading to the battle of Trafalgar? Because he needed to. They could not supply a fleet of that size by land.

I never said they could supply a whole planet, just that they had the ability to use the sun to likely grow crops at a much higher yield and therefore they'll be a net exporter of crops to whoever can pay them for those crops, which is a very valuable position to be in with frozen borders all around you.

Agreed.

My recollection is that basically Retribution needs to care for his planet now. Like he might be happy in the immediate but he will have to take time to fix the issues.

That’s not to say it ends up sunny but much like Harmony had to fix Scadrial, Retribution now needs to make some changes and I think that’ll happen off screen before book 6. Given the relative short time span compared to Scadrial, I doubt it’ll be big things.

I guess you have discovered a further reason, why Retribution gives the Listeners Warlight.

I wonder how this change is going to affect singers.  Do they just have to go out at night to change their forms?

This is a great question!

The spren are still there, though no longer bound to Roshar as they were before. So I'd think for any normal forms as long as a Singer can find the right spren, they can change whenever they want right? 

For forms of power, I'm sure Retribution will have to send the spren chosen to the Singers and it will all be regulated through their leadership.

As far as ecology goes (mistborn spoilers)

Harmony changed things like the Kolos so they could breed true and we don't really know what happened to mistwraiths. He also changed plants to become green

So I wouldn't be suprised if Retribution changes things for animals and plants so they survive better but doesn't change any of the humans or parshman so they become dependent on him
