The Bookwyrm he/him Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 (edited) A heavy fog hung over the trees of the forest. It only got worse as Maria Flores drove her team's van closer to the site of the anomaly. She couldn't remember whether or not the reports had stated it as a prior effect, before...whatever had caused the radio silence. Regardless, it certainly seemed to be an affect of the anomaly now. They were in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, located in southern Wyoming. A place for hikers and tourists, nestled between Mount Adams and Mount Saint Helens. However, Agent Flores now took her team deep into a part of the forest that none of those tourists would ever be able to visit. The anomaly the ARC had been monitoring within the forest had already had some Information Dampening effects, making it nearly impossible to find for someone without the proper training or equipment. Someone standing on a nearby mountain would look right at the area and completely miss it. Hikers walking towards it would get the sudden unshakable feeling they were going the wrong way, and alter their path to avoid it. The area didn't even show up on satellite footage. It took a measure of willpower to keep Maria going the right way due to these effects. Every bit of instinct in her mind told her the dirt path she was driving on, which no normal person would ever find themselves doing, was leading her in exactly the opposite direction of where she wanted to go. Luckly that overpowering instinct was a clear indicator she was going the right way. Logic versus instinct. Both of them would betray you, in this line of work. The trick was knowing which one was doing so at which times. The fog - more of a mist, really - continued to grow thicker as the trees around the road got taller. Towering, almost as much as the redwoods down south. Another anomaly, and another aspect of the area that was hidden from the general population. Apparently, analysis of the trees had revealed that there was nothing inherently anomalous about them. They were just...tall. Taller than logic dictated they should be. After several more minutes of driving, they finally came up to the gate of the facility. A tall, blocky building emerged from the fog, though not nearly as tall as the trees surrounding the area. Extending from either side of it was a barbed wire fence that gently curved, encircling the center of the anomalous area in a physical perimeter. The main gate of the building was a heavily reinforced door. Above the door were the words: FEDERAL AGENCY OF RESEARCH AND CONTROL SITE-209 "THE RIM" BUILDING 2: ADMINISTRATION They'd arrived. Maria pulled over to the side of the clearing and parked the van. The instinct to turn around had stopped, thankfully, now that they'd actually arrived. She turned around in her seat and looked back at her small team. All young, but all skilled. "Alright, ladies and gentlemen, here we are. Let's get to work." She opened the door and stepped out of the van. Time to figure out what had happened. @Ookla the Inconclusive @Ookla the Dragonslayer @Ookla the Finwëan @Ookla the Irreplaceable @Ookla the Doomfrog Quote Alrighty; let's see how this goes! I'm going to keep the PM open, for planning and possible changes. Hopefully we can get this going pretty far. Quote Characters: @Ookla the Ouroboros: Maria Flores Spoiler Name: Maria Flores Gender/Pronouns: She/her Age: 34 Physical Description: Of average hight, with a solid build. She has straight black hair that she keeps tied in a bun usually, and light brown skin. Personality: She comes off as pretty serious and no-nonsense, but there is a wry sense of humor under there if you get to know her. She's very loyal to the people and causes that matter to her, but it's hard to get into that position. Lots of new recruits are scared of her. Backstory: After serving for a short time as an officer in the army, began training in the CIA. The ARC took notice of her special skills and recruited her. After serving as an embedded agent in the CIA for a few more years, she transferred fully to ARC operations. She's seen a lot of stuff. No one ever quite gets used to dealing with anomalies, but...she's steelier than some. Skills and Speciality: Aside from being an expert field operative, trained in hand-to-hand as well as firearm combat, she also has a good situational analysis and leadership skills. Her experience as an officer in the army gave her a stern commanding presence, and her time in the CIA gave her skills in discreet intelligence gathering and operation. She's a force to be reckoned with on any type of case, but these days she primarly leads Containment teams to sites in order to secure dangerous anomalies. Quirks/Misc: Always carries a flashlight around, even when the case doesn't call for it. (Though it usually does.) Likes to reminisce with other former military ARC agents. Sometimes comes off as a parental figure. @Ookla the Finwëan: Olivia Wilson Spoiler Name: Doctor Olivia Wilson Gender/Pronouns: Female, she/her Age: 29 Physical Description: She has coily black hair pulled back tightly into braids, mahogany colored skin, round features and almond shaped eyes. Probably practical clothes and a backpack for carrying her supplies. Backstory: Liv went into medical school right after high school, and became a doctor. As a part of her thesis project she researched local supernatural phenomena that were affecting peoples physical health. Her older sister Madge, who became a part of the ARC through the military read her work, and was impressed enough to recommend her. Liv decided she liked the idea of working for the ARC more than working on medical research, so she joined. Skills and Specialties: Great at first aid and probably a little second aid too. Certified to diagnose stab wounds as stab wounds. She's pretty decent at fighting because of lessons from her sister, but she's by no means an expert. Quirks/Misc: Hates cheese. Goes by Liv. Carries her MD-PhD everywhere, it's in her pocket. Personality: Spoiler 'Role' in the group because we were doing that: 'Healer' @Ookla the Irreplaceable: Matthew Stone (I know you did some updates to him, though, so you can post a new sheet if you'd like.) Spoiler Name: Matthew (Matt) Stone Gender/Pronouns: He/Him, Male Age: 26 Physical Description: average height, curly dark hair, small scar on cheek. Personality: quiet and reserved, but determined and can be passionate. Backstory: his uncle was a member and he discovered this when the uncle was investigating a disturbance in the old family mansion, where a revenant, or a vengeful ghost, was hunting his brother James. Both disappeared one day, and Matthew discovered his uncle, dying from a wound, who told him about his mission. He was recruited to finish the uncle’s job, but has been unsuccessful in finding his brother. Skills and Speciality: trained in martial arts as well as fencing, archery and gymnastics from a young age. Quirks/Misc: none right now, may add some later. @Ookla the Dragonslayer: Kastel Hare Spoiler Name: Kastel Hare Gender/Pronouns: male, he/him Age:28 Physical Description: tall, bearded, bald. Has a lean, muscular build. Backstory: (How did they come to find out about the ASC? Why were they recruited?) Before he worked for ARC, he was a local officer for a rural area, transferred from a more urban area, in which he had already been known and noted for his capacity to serve. One day, a local came to him about an anomaly, and he near single-handedly contained and captured them them. (They were weak). When he filed a report, ARC intercepted it and recruited him. Skills and Speciality: (What do they bring to the agency? Why were they chosen for this operation?) He is a point op, trained to either go in for recon or stealth. And, if necessary, guns a’blazin’. Quirks/Misc: Uhhhhhhhhh… I’m still taking suggestions @Ookla the Doomfrog: Tim Robinson Spoiler Name: Tim Robinson Gender/Pronouns: He/Him, Male Age: 25 Physical Description: A little above average height, wears glasses, medium length brown hair Backstory: (How did they come to find out about the ASC? Why were they recruited?) Tim was doing a research paper for college that touched on the paranormal, and in his line of research, he stumbled upon a very classified paranormal object/site. This led to an interrogation and once they learned that he hadn't stolen confidential government documents, they decided he would be an asset, so they hired him as an intern. Skills and Speciality: (What do they bring to the agency? Why were they chosen for this operation?) Tim is very good at piecing together data and filling in gaps in information. He also has a knack for stumbling into dangerous situations, particularly when they're of the supernatural sort. Quirks/Misc: He always makes sure to have a quarter in his pocket. @Ookla the Inconclusive: Astrid Novak Spoiler Name: Astrid Novak Gender/Pronouns: Female, she/her Age: 25 Physical Description: Brown hair, green eyes, somewhere around 5'8" but she slouches a lot and so she looks shorter. Backstory: Knew a guy who told hinted about ARC, she got interested, researched, and joined. Was a sniper in the military before she joined ARC. Skills and Specialties: Ranged weaponry. Is good at recognizing and remembering small but relevant details. Quirks/Misc: Hates being called short by guys. Loves calling guys short. Always has a hair tie and a pencil somewhere in her pockets. Ah, the joys of starting an RP during Ookla season. Edited December 2, 2024 by Ookla the Ouroboros 3

"Our primary goal is to get to Building 1, the center of Containment for the facility. We'll gauge the situation, then spread out and explore the rest of the facility. She hoped it wouldn't but...you never knew. Maria wore her ARC jacket, simple grey with the seal of the organization on the back and the acronym on each sleeve's shoulder. Underneath that was a white button up shirt, sturdy cargo pants, and hiking boots. With the pack on her back, and her gun and flashlight tied to her belt, she felt secure. Ready. Or at least as ready as she'd ever be. "Gear up," she said to her team. "Then we'll head in."

She also grabbed a flashlight, a heavy-duty hunting knife, and some extra magazines. 4 hours ago, Ookla the Ouroboros said: "Only what we need," Maria said. "But what we need might end up being more than you think. At the very least, make sure you have the receivers for monitoring." Devices that could pick up on anomalous or extradimensional influences. She didn't know how they worked, exactly; she wasn't from the Department of Research and Records. But she did know how to use them. They were vitally important to containment work. "I'd also bring a videorecorder," Maria said, grabbing one for herself from the stash and sliding it into a case on her belt. "The people in charge are going to want footage." She made sure she had a receiver and a camera.

"Do we know what kind of anomalies the facility was working on?" @Ookla the Ouroboros

He grabbed a knife, for practical as well as defensive purposes, and a handgun. He wouldn’t have use for a rifle up close to whatever anomalies he was going to find in there. “Do we have a map of the place?” Maria nodded. "It should be on your phone." The ARC liked using modern technology, and so every agent was outfitted with a smartphone for field work. Unless the case made using it impractial. Or unsafe. 21 minutes ago, Ookla the Irreplaceable said: Matthew finished grabbing his equipment, then surveyed the territory. "Do we know what kind of anomalies the facility was working on?" @Ookla the Ouroboros "The Rim was built to contain an anomaly they call the Rabbit Hole," Maria said. "You'll find the hole itself at the center of the facility, in the grounds circled by Building 1. A pit that goes on forever. Anomalies of various kinds have been reported in the area. Mysterious things happening. Dissapearances. Cognitive anomalies, too. Weird dreams, apparently. The Hole was at the center of the area where these anomalies were happening. "What exactly the Rim was containing and researching was classified, even to me...but the Department of Containment and Protection assumes that whatever caused the radio silence also introduced several new anomalies into the area. So even if we could read the official files...we'd still be going in mostly blind." The thought made her uncomfortable. As streamlined as the ARC was, parts of it could still be a bureaucratic mess. The fact that she'd been denied access to research files on the anomalies in the area...it either meant that someone was being petty at the expense of others, or that something very dangerous was happening here. After a moment's thought, she changed her mind and grabbed a black shotgun from the back of the van. She threw it over her shoulder by the strap, letting it rest by her pack. It wasn't made for close combat and it's really bulky to carry around in a pack. Quote So wait, are they in the facility already or just outside it? There's a barrier of some sort, right? Theres a fence that circles the entire thing, except for where the administration building is, but that building is highly fortified so it's still part of the perimeter. I should make a rough map of it and post a picture.

On a moment’s consideration, Kastel grabbed an anomaly reader, a good length of rope, a flashlight, and then frowned in thought. “Whatever we are going against here was able to overcome a full facility… either it’s just blocking comms, or a lot of this will be redundant against anomalies that have already bested the best versions of this.” He nodded at Maria’s answer, then pulled the map up. “Thanks.” ”Official files are boring, anyways. They never really prepare you for the nitty gritty details of the anomalies.” Edited December 3, 2024 by Ookla the Dragonslayer

Just_a_Fan he/him Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 (edited) Crow slings a shotgun around his back, holsters a usi, grabs a riot shield, then packs plenty of ammo, a bunch of medkits, various grenades, some rations, quite a few flares of several kinds, a flare gun, and an almost sword-like knife into his backpack. "Huh, a group of trained folks exploring strange, eldritch locations... where have I heard that before???" he mutters under his breath, while wiping his banaged brow. eventually he fishes out a fire extinguisher, an LMG, a blowtorch and an RPG Quote is paranoid = very yes. is blind to the reference he just made = also yes.
