Dalinar is gonna fight Odium right? So that means that he might die.

Welcome to the Shard! If you could make an intro post to list what you have and haven't read it can help us avoid spoilers, and introduce yourself to the community.

Dalinar will fight Odium, unless something happens and he can't fight. There are theories based around death rattles to predict the outcome, a popular one is Odium chooses a baby as his champion and Dalinar can't bring himself to kill it. Here are some Death Rattles that I think apply.

Spoiler

Ā

Light grows so distant. The storm never stops. I am broken, and all around me have died. I weep for the end of all things. He has won. Oh, he has beaten us.

Dalinar breaks the Oath over the Contest, killing the Stormfather.

Spoiler

I hold the suckling child in my hands, a knife at his throat, and know that all who live wish me to let the blade slip. Spill its blood upon the ground, over my hands, and with it gain us further breath to draw.Ā

The aforementioned baby champion theory.

Spoiler

Ā

I'm standing over the body of a brother. I'm weeping. Is that his blood or mine? What have we done?

I just saw this one, maybe Renerin and Adolin? I saw a theory that Adolin would fight for Odium in the right scenario.

These are all the ones I can think of that apply.

I think it's definitely possible, but personally I don't he will. He doesn't die if he loses the contest, but instead becomes Odium's champion. I'd say he's more likely to become a Fused than he is to die. I'm sure we'll get some character deaths in WaT, but I don't feel like Dalinar will be one of them.

(Side note, I moved this topic to the Stormlight Archive forum instead of Fanworks, as it's a spoiler discussion)Ā

I had heard that the third one was referring to someone else, but I shan't say.

Well… technically, yes, he MIGHT die. But I find it unlikely. First, I don’t think the contest will necessarily be a fight. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if I remember correctly, nowhere is it explicitly stated that the contest will be a fight to the death. I think this could be the loophole that TOdium will try to exploit. I think he (Taravangian) will choose a contest that will benefit him, regardless of the outcome. Most likely, it will be a battle of wits of some sort, where he will try to ā€œbreakā€ Dalinar in some way.

Personally, I hope that the contest doesn’t end with Dalinar’s side winning the contest outright. It would be far more fulfilling for Dalinar to instead convince TOdium, possibly by showing him the consequences of the path he is setting out to take - reminiscent of Dalinar and Gavilar’s own journey - to give up the contest, to not go down this path of conquest and bloodshed. Perhaps - though this might be too farĀ - Taravangian can be convinced to give up the shard of Odium.

It was. RoW ch 112:

Quote

"Final terms are these: A contest of champions to the death."

Oh that’s right. I forget that Taravangian became Odium. That makes more sense.

The current Odium demonstrably has a different outlook regarding the concept of "winning" when it comes to contests as the Odium who set the problem up to begin with. Literally anything could happen...

That said, Dalinar is named after the author's first-born son irl...without totally breaking the 4th (possibly 5th...) wall, I'm expecting him to, at the very least, still technically be alive at the end of book 5 for symbolic purposes...lol.

That’s funny. I had no idea that Dalinar was named after his son, but now that I think of it, it’s right.
