Wits instant noodles he/him Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Okay so I was thinking about how these metals would interact and i had a few things I couldn't quite decide on. so the basic idea is that both essentially give you super speed but in different ways, F-Steal by speeding you up and A-Bendalloy by slowing everyone else down. But what I couldn't decide on revolves around if a Slider was fighting a Steelrunner. Basically if they're both at a complete stand still and the Slider throws up a bubble. Can the Steelrunner then tap his speed to match the Slider? or is he also just stuck? essentially this has to do with the speed of investiture, how fast would it go from his bracer to actually Effecting his speed?

The only example we have of this sort of interaction is in SoS, where Wayne puts up a Speed Bubble to match Bleeder's steel Feruchemy, allowing Wax to pelt her with shotgun rounds. We don't really have a real estimate for how quickly tapping causes a boost, but it seems instant for most intents and purposes. If it's a matter of reaction time, the first to speed up should have the upper hand. But, if it comes down to a 1v1 fight I'd say a prepared Steelrunner will always have a massive advantage over a prepared Slider. The Slider cannot attack effectively outside of their bubble without just spraying bullets everywhere randomly, and once the bubble is set it will take a few seconds before it can be set again. Furthermore, if the Steelrunner is inside the Slider's bubble at any time they get that on top of their own speed boost, effectively negating that advantage for the Slider. 3

I would say the disparity is actually even worse than that. A speed runner doped up on steel can very easily just pop a bend alloyist's bubble by crossing their threshold. You're 100% correct though, it's really just a matter of which one starts burning/tapping first since they're both radically faster than actual human capability for thought once they get going.

Bendalloy doesn't slow everyone down, it speeds up the time around a Slider. Yes, the Steelrunner can tap his metalminds to match the speed of the Slider (which we see in SoS ch 16), but only after he notices the bubble which will take some time. But the bubble can't be normally moved, so the Slider can't really fight from the distance with the Steelrunner. If the Slider puts a bubble with the Steelrunner inside, the Steelrunner can tap his metalminds and be faster because the Slider isn't sped up, only time around them both is and so they are both affected. Throwing punches through the bubble is also not possible, so the Steelrunner has the advantage in this fight. Quote The kandra stood alone before the door to the saferoom. She looked at Wax, smiled, and became a blur. But her speed only lasted a fraction of a second. Soon after she’d begun tapping her metalmind, she slowed back down. Wax caught sight of her just as she unlocked the door to the governor’s saferoom, using a key she shouldn’t have. She pulled the door open with a flourish, then glanced back at Wax, shaking her head. She obviously thought she was still a blur moving with incredible speed. And she was. Wax had simply joined her. One of the fallen bodies stirred, and Wayne pushed back his hat, showing a grin. Spoiler Kurkistan If Wayne was inside of a speed bubble and punches somebody who's standing outside it, what's happening with his fist and them: are they like sucked into the bubble, or what? Brandon Sanderson So, I have... So exiting a speed bubble, while it's going, has weird ramifications on lots of things. It would be really hard to punch somebody through a speed bubble-- Kurkistan So would the surface like distend around his fist-- *Illustrates with fist "stretching out" invisible film* Brandon Sanderson It's going to steal your momentum, but if you actually managed to do it, then-- yes. Anything in the speed bubble that's touching through is counted as being as part of the speed bubble. Kurkistan Okay, so his bubble would end here *Draws invisible surface in the air* and his fist would be out there *Illustrates by "punching" arm through the fake surface, demonstrating the fist extending past the bubble while he arm is within*, but still fast? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Kurkistan Oh okay, thank you. Brandon Sanderson That's how I've imagined it so far. Kurkistan But the bubble does end at [the same place still, with the fist extending out past its boundary]. Brandon Sanderson The bubble does end, yes. Kurkistan *Makes pleasantries and goes to leave* Brandon Sanderson And when you're punching through, it's going to-- your momentum is gonna'-- you're going to lose momentum and get a ricochet, because you're lurching from-- *notices Kurkistan (very foolishly) acting like he's about to leave* anyway... I'll let you figure that one out on your own. Words of Radiance Philadelphia signing (March 21, 2014) 1
