The Burnt Man yelled. “Do it! While he is WEAK!”

Retlen walked with the new soldier, leading him to the bonfire, where his other men sat.

In the end, only fire can cleanse us. Retlen straightened, the narrowed his eyes. What would you wish me to do?

The fire. If you truly believe in purity, allow the fire to cleanse you of your impurities.

Retlen stood in front of his men, raising his voice with a zealot’s rage. “Men! If you believe in our cause, you will follow me in this path to be cleansed, starting with the refining of a fire!”

And with this, he threw himself into the fire. He felt strangely invigorated by the intense heat, and felt vastly stronger. “Join me, or prove your heresy!” He yelled from the flames.

One man grinned, throwing himself into the fire. He was unharmed, and joined him. One other man shoved another into the fire, then leapt in himself. The man was unharmed, but the one he shoved screamed of pain, quickly collapsing then dying.

A voice appeared to Arel. Do it do it do it do it do it

Arel, afraid of being killed, jumped into the fire.

Yeah, I’d missed it. Sorry about that

Let’s say two days. I don’t have a firm map, but I do know that you can’t have started too far, since if you start too far you’d have started in a city instead of a town. (I think.)

The flames licked him, but did nothing. Except… he seemed stronger. Revitalized.

My gift to you.

Retlen grinned as Arel entered the flame.

-Some time later-

As the small band continued down the road, they saw a body on the ground. The leg had broken into… pieces… and the head was missing from the neck. Retlen picked it up, and showed it to his men, which were considerably fewer now that the heretics died in the fire. “This, my men, was a heretic. One of the worst. Given powers by heathen deities, instead of the Flame. Even the group of heretics I sent to die recognized that it needed to be killed.”

Arel smiled uncertainly at Retlen. “Thank you.” He says, bowing his head.

-“some time later”-

Arel stares at the desecrated body, and steps back.

Her stomach rumbled. Having very little food the past two days had left her hungry, and she was even more thirsty.

There should be a multitude of taverns in there.

All right so here is some background. In nearly every small town, there are a large amount of “taverns”. These are dedicated to Mirth (cuz people see Mirth as the best of them, and also think of Mirth were to chose a Servant, it would be a bard or smt). These are generally more refined than what we think of them as.

Retlen places his arm around Arel’s back. “I know I must seem cruel, son. It is horrible, what happened to this person. But it was necessary.”

I have no money, she thought. Why would they give me anything?

She pressed gently on her stomach with her hand. The pressure helped distract her from what felt like the empty cavern inside her belly.

Hmm… how are you with music? If you can pass as a bard, you should be able to get food and board.

Uh… I can sing okay…

Perhaps you won’t have to sing. What do you know about history? You might be able to recount an epic. And if you don’t know much, I’ll be able to guide you through them.

This is our purpose. To bring the Flame to all. To bring me to all. And there will inevitably be casualties is this war.

Maybe a guided history would be best..

Aela walked into town.

Near the entrance, a tavern signed “House of Mirth” stood. It was large, the establishment looking a bit nicer than all the nearby buildings.

And glass. If you recognize what this town is, kindly ignore that. I may eventually bring y’all back here, though.

Not waiting for anyone else’s reaction, she opened the door and stepped in.

A man stood near the entrance. He gave her a curt nod. “The rate is 35 copper pieces a night. Ten for a meal.”

The man smiled. “A bard, aren’t you? Well, if you tell a spice, I’ll give it to you for free, as well as to any of your companions.”

“Yes, I should be able to do that.”

Hope you’ve got some stories handy.

Uuuuuuuhhhhh… me too…

Well…I could make up one… or I could give y’all the story of the creation of this world…

Don’t worry. I do.

“Where should I stand?”

The man gestured to a raised platform.

First mention the great spirits. Recount that they agreed to create, it is what they expect. Feel free to use my power to manipulate their emotions.

She walked up to it, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. “It started with the Great Spirits. They agreed to create.”
