"Marewill, stop! How many times have I asked you to-"

"Oh, please, like you couldn't do anything. I'm sure you knew about the assignment, whether before or after, and I'm sure they would've mentioned the little girl with him that night. Maybe you weren't there. Fine. I'll give you that. But you could've left! You could've tried to do something to make some sort of difference, but no."

"Asking me to make some kind of difference? You could find any number of people who didn't make a difference in the world, and you wouldn't be this horrible to them. I'm done with you blaming me for their death. It was long before I had even joined the Steeles, and, I would have you know that the things I did in life did make a difference, you Ruster. I killed the one person in the world who cared about me to save other people. Do you think that others would be able to do that? Even if they didn't know it was her, do you think others would be physically capable to kill her? Do not talk to me about making a difference, Mare. What difference have you make, huh? I'm the one who actually fought the peacekeeper army while you sat, playing around with your little feruchemy tricks. I'm the one who is struggling through having another person in my mind, yet still making more of a difference than you. Shut up! If you don't want me here, you could have stopped me from coming with you. I sure as hell don't want to be here if all I'm getting is undeserved hate!"

Mark's eyes flash with anger.

"Don't even think about talking to me about making a difference, before you consider what difference you've made. Don't even think about blaming me and hating me, then making up an excuse to hate me that could work on half of the world. I know that they won't come back, but that doesn't mean you have to blame me for it. People are going to die. That is how this Ruined world works. There are other options than wrongfully blaming someone for your parent's death. Because in all of your hate of me, have you actually listened to me? Have we not danced this dance a dozen times, of you blaming me for your parents death for no particular reason? Do you really even remember all of the times we've had this argument? Do you?"

"Do you ever stop to listen, or to remember? Try thinking about those things. In fact, try thinking. I'm done with this rust. Shut up, and learn that there are people who are actually responsible for it!"

"If you two are going to continue this, I'm going to need you to do it outside my home," Rashi said. "It's been seven years." She turned her gaze towards Marewill. "Move on."

She blinked many times in succession, her mouth hanging open. She wanted to retort. To smart mouth. To slap him.

But she couldn’t. Because as much as she hated his gang, his former way of life… she knew he was right.

She turned and walked away, not saying another word. Rashi’s words stung but again, Marewill knew she was right. She ascended the stairs, making near no noise on the steps.

Entering a guest bedroom, she locked the door, turning back around and sliding her back against the wood. Silently, she stopped being able to hold back her tears.

Dougella glances at Lee, her gaze full of love. She grabs his hand under the table. "When do you want to tell them?" she whispers to him.

@J. Magi

"Whenever you'd like," He said, squeezing her hand. "Maybe after dinner since people have already started eating?"

"And if Mare doesn't, we probably shouldn't." Emma got up and walked to the door.

"You. Woman. Go find somewhere else to crash. We don't want you here."

Lee turned at hearing yelling in another part of the house, but it soon stopped. He hated how his heart hammered in his chest. Yes, he'd expecting this night to be hard for everyone, but he'd hoped they could be united in that . . .

Milay turned to Tinker after hearing the raised voices.

"She still not over it?"

Tinker closed his eyes. "Not completely, no. I've tried to help her, but..." he sighed. "The times under the old Capitol were hard for us all."

"We didn't lose a parent to murder."

"We lost a sister to disease, and the Capitol might as well have murdered her."

"Still. Her situation is far different. We freed ourselves from the source of our hate. We got our revenge. She feels like she still needs it."

Tinker gazed sadly down the stairs towards the dining area. "Maybe..."

Not that you have to respond but I thought you should know this was a conversation that happened.

He’d probably know this-

She just wants some kind of justice for her father, and since they helped with the revolution, she doesn’t think it’ll be done. She was using Mark as a scapegoat for all of his gang because it’s the easiest option
