Jenny skipped through camp, continuing to hum. She approached the campfire and plopped down right in front of it, ignoring the empty seats at tables. People usually shooed her away, anyways. The warmth was nice; it had been getting a bit chilly recently. There were two other campers sitting nearby she thought she recognized. Oblivious to the apparent tension between them, she raised both of her arms and waved at both simultaneously.

She then stuck her dagger into the fire, watching the metal slowly heat. Jenny wasn’t able to get it glowing red hot, but it was good enough. Removing the purple flower from her bun, she set it on the ground. She carefully held the dagger against the flower. It caused a quiet hissing sound, and a faint scent wafted upwards. She inhaled deeply.

Satisfied, she tossed the rest of her flowers in the fire. Immediately, a sickeningly sweet smell drifted in all directions. Jenny grinned and clapped her hands excitedly. She’d finally found them, those smelly flowers that the satyrs she eavesdropped on had been talking about! She would have to return to that patch tomorrow and gather some more.

When the smell reached the tables closest to the fire, the campers there wrinkled their noses in disgust and glared at Jenny. Some left, taking their meals with them. They didn’t share her preferences in perfumes. She didn’t notice this, of course. Overjoyed, she hoped that her father would appreciate her offering. The flowers smelled of death, after all.

Let me know if any of this is different than you would like.

Edgar looked at Jenny and smiled. Anther outcast, though for seemingly different reasons. He wished she would talk to him, she seemed nice enough if one ignored her…eccentricities. The gods knew he had enough of those to not judge.

That works great!

Jenny saw someone looking at her. She automatically assumed that meant he was friendly, as she always did. Quickly, she scraped some of the flowers’ ashes out of the fire and dumped them in her pocket. Jenny waved at the guy again, having forgotten that she had done so already. She skipped over to him and plopped down on the seat across from him. She grabbed a handful of the recovered ash and held it out to him.

”Want some death flower ash? It smells like death. And flowers.”

She paused, sniffing.

”Mostly death.”

He waved halfheartedly as she made her way over, not expecting her to actually sit by him. When she did and offered him  the ash, he smiled again. “Sure, I guess. Is this ash special?” He took a little, sniffing it himself.

“Super special!”

She grinned back, then dumped the rest on the table, some spilling off the sides. She didn’t break eye contact, so that went unnoticed.

”It came from some nice flowers. They smell so good because they’re reallllllly poisonous. Burns your nostrils a little.”

She pulled out the single flower she had saved and showed it off.

“This is a not-burnt one! They look pretty.”

Edgar laughed, a gentle, kind laugh. “I see. Make sure you’re careful with it, ok?” He looked closely at the living flower. “It is pretty! How does it deliver its poison?” His Gift morphed into a glove around his right hand.

Yeah that works

Jenny beamed. The guy wasn’t shooing her away!

”If you eat it, you die. Not instantly, though. There’s quite a bit of vomiting before that happens. The poison gets into your blood before it can be expelled, however, so that just ends up inevitably prolonging your extremely painful suffering!”

She said this with a cheerful smile. Jenny then tapped the guy’s glove.

”What’s your transforming thingy?”

He grinned back at her. It had been a long time since someone had treated him like this. “Wow, that’s really interesting. Like I said…be careful, please.”

He looked down at his hand. “That’s my Gift, the only thing my dad’s ever really given me. It transforms to what I need at the moment, it’s very useful sometimes.”

She cocked her head, curious. She then giggled softly to herself when that reminded her of that dead bird. She could even hear her neck bones pop when she moved them.

“Does it change into weapons? Can it shoot projectiles? Do you get to pick what it is?”

Before he could respond, she dropped her dagger on the table, sending some of the ash flying.

”Can you make it like my dagger?”

He laughed again. “Yes, kind of, sometimes, and yes.” He lifted his hand, and the Gift flowed again, forming a hilt in his hand, then a blade, almost exactly mimicking Jenny’s knife.

Jenny clapped excitedly.

“That’s amazing!”

She pulled out her ruby and dropped it on the table. It was heavy enough that it made a resounding thump when it hit, making her dagger clatter and sending even more ash flying. The weight seemed oddly excessive relative to its size.

”This is what my dad gave me. It glows if stuff nearby dies. I use it a lot.”

“Today I used it to find a dead bird. It was all busted up from crashing into the ground, I think. Really messed up its wing. I like practicing my necromancy, so I reanimated it.”

She sat back, proud.

”There’s quite a few not-dead birds and squirrels running around the forest because of me. They all have beautiful black eyes. You should say hi if you see one!”

“Wow, that’s cool, I’ll make sure to say hi if I see one. What all can your necromancy do?” he asked, leaning forward, legitimately intrigued.

“I can’t really animate anything much larger than a squirrel. I tried reanimating a cat once and it… did not go well. And people don’t really want me practicing on their dead pets.”

She shrugged.

”I have no idea why. They’re dead, it’s not like they need their bodies anymore!”

She absentmindedly twirled her dagger, nearly slicing herself as it fell over.

“I don’t really know why people care, but…well I’ve never been an animal person myself, so I wouldn’t know anyway.”

Jenny set her dagger down and tried to scoop up the remaining ash into a pile.

”Animals can be fun. Some can be cute. Others might want to kill you. Some are both. Those are extra fun! I’m not supposed to reanimate the dangerous ones, though.”

Jenny cocked her head, this time to the opposite side. Her bones cracked even louder. Odd that the guy called him a traitor when he had been very nice to her.

”What did he do?”

“What did he do? He let kylee die. He abandoned her to a group of monsters.”

Edgar stood angrily, knocking ash off the table. “I did not! Don’t speak of things you don’t know.” His Gift shifted, anticipating his needs, extending the blade in his hand to a shortsword.

Jenny frowned when her remaining ash went flying. She then grabbed her dagger off of the table and pulled out its twin, standing up too. She mostly just wanted an excuse to wield them.

”Who’s Kylee?”

“My old friend. I went on a quest with her…she didn’t make it.” A tear fell from his face. “I tried to save her but…I couldn’t. I wasn’t strong enough.” He turned back to Roy. “I didn’t abandon her though.”

“Oh.”

Weren’t you supposed to say something comforting when people died?

”I’m sorry for your loss.”

She brightened.

”You’ll probably get to see her again, though! Assuming none of you are extremely evil. I might even see her first!”

She laughed.
