Devotary of Spontaneity Posted January 14, 2024 Author Posted January 14, 2024 (edited) Night 4: Mist-Taken Identity “Endsayer!” Murph accused, loading one of his crossbows with a glass-tipped bolt. “You shall face my wrath, Mistborn!” Murph hadn’t protested when the carpenter’s shop became town property, throwing himself into the work of mass-producing crossbows, bolts, ballistae, and fortification walls with unmatched zeal. Only now that he’d found a target at which to direct his wrath did it become apparent that losing power had affected him. For his part, Endsayer had visibly stopped taking care of himself since he’d wrongfully executed Bartleby three days prior. Only the obsidian blade remained in good condition as he raised it towards his foe. “God has given me one final task,” he intoned. “One chance to fix my mistakes. I see now that path begins by correcting the accident of your continued existence.” The townsfolk dared not intervene in their duel. Everyone knew this conflict was personal for both participants, that neither would back down until the other’s lifeblood painted the ground red. Everyone, that is, except for Elephant. “Hey everyone, sorry I’m late,” he said, rubbing his eyes as he ambled sleepily into the center of town. “Forgot this was still happening, what’s going on?” Murph’s eyes turned to the intruder. “Didn’t think you could handle me one-on-one?” he taunted Endsayer. “Wanted some help from your forgetful friend? Well, too bad,” he snapped at the same instant he switched his aim and pulled the trigger. Endsayer didn’t stand around to watch the bolt sprout into a horn between Elephant’s eyes, instead using the temporary distraction to lunge forward and pierce Murph’s heart with obsidian. Murph gasped in pain, but no blood spilled forth. Instead, Endsayer stumbled backwards, arm screaming in agony from impacting hidden armor far stronger than vulnerable flesh. Murph didn’t hesitate to press his advantage. Grabbing a second, already loaded crossbow from where it hung by his side, he fired a second glass bolt into Endsayer’s throat. “Ah-hahaha!” Murph cried in delight. “I’ve saved the town. Any more Mistborn wanna try me? I’ll shoot you all down. When the New Empire’s army arrives, my weapons will drown them in a deluge of bolts so numerous they’ll blot out the sun!” His ravings were cut off by Endsayer speaking his last words between coughing up blood. “Murph, Murph,” he rasped. “I’m not a Mistborn.” Murph froze, sense of accomplishment diminished as he watched a completely powerless Endsayer slip away into his second death. He was so shocked he didn’t resist as Afandor and Sidor confiscated all of his weaponry and escorted him back to work. Fuchsia Ostrich was executed! They were a Villager. If I had a nickel for every time a player I read / end up reading Village fakeclaims being a Mistborn only to reveal it was a gambit with the results mostly consisting of suspecting me, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. In two cycles.
