Anna sighed. "You can't go on not trusting anyone, Dearest, that's not the way humans were made to be."

It’s not how we’re supposed to be, but it’s how they made me.

She nodded her head, but didn’t move.

Anna leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. She seemed to age, looking much older and worn down.

Freja didn’t move. Was this an act?

Anna didn't move either, nor did she go back to looking young.

Freja still waited, not moving.

Just then, Jacin walked into the kitchen, smiling brightly. "Hello Freja, how was your bath?" He walked over and unfolded a small blanket, tucking it around Anna's shoulders and kissing the top of her head gently. Anna stirred but didn't wake up.

She immediately smiled back, a smile that was barely noticeable as fake. “Very good, thank you.”

"That's good to hear, have you and Anna been getting along?"

“We have. She seems very kind, like yourself.”

"Yeah..." His eyes saddened and he looked down. " She is very kind." He swallowed the lump forming in his throat.

“Is there…something wrong?” she asked gently, laying a hand on his arm.

"I just..." He whispered hoarsely, "She..." He glanced back at her as she started stirring again. "Let's go into the other room, can we?"

“Yes, of course,” she said, looking at him with sympathetic eyes.

You’re not the only one who can act.

Jacin nodded, moved into the other room, and sat down, head in his hands on the sofa. "You see..." He gulped and started again. "Anna... doesn't have very much time left." His voice broke as he tried to compose his anguish.

Freja sat next to him, leaning against him slightly. “Is there anything that can be done?”

"T-terminal illness... there isn't anything I can do." He whispered, half sobbing as he leaned against her too. "Why can't I save them..."

She put an arm around him, pulling him tight. “It’s not your fault.”

 Is…could he…could this be a lie too?

"I just... I tried so hard-" He broke off, trying to sob quietly so as not to wake Anna in the kitchen.

“You do, which is how you know you’ve done everything you can.”

You could break him.

But what would that achieve?

"There... there should be something else I can do..." He shook his head, trying to clear his eyes.

“I’m sorry.” She let her head rest on his shoulder.

He nodded, trying to collect himself. "So am I. I... know you have enough to deal with your sister and all.."
