Speed bubbles and melee combat questions

Recommended Posts

If an object is thrown through a speed bubble there is an audible pop and it loses kinetic energy. This happens after enough of the objects cognitive / spiritual self is far enough beyond the bubble.

How does this work with melee weapons?  If I am holding the weapon can it make its way out of the bubble while I am still inside of the bubble?

Would it be moving as quickly as my arm is that is swinging it?  I imagine that has to be a no no. But what then of my arm?

What about swinging an object at a person outside of the bubble? If I have a 6 foot staff and the person is 3 feet from the bubbles edge and I swing the staff out 4 feet from the edge is the bubble still encompassing me or the staff?  Can it hit the person at all. If the staff slapped a person while still being in the bubble yet the person was outside would the kinetic energy be robbed to be that of a normal hit?  Would the person being hit be temporarily treated as if they were in the bubble until the staff was no longer touching them?

If I missed somewhere that explained this I apologize. I just read through a handful of WoBs and saw a bunch of RAFO from nearly a decade ago.  As far as I can remember we have only ever seen people using ranged attacks through the bubbles or Wayne 1v1ing wholly inside of a bubble.

I am sad that I can't figure out how this will work given that the only slider we have seen was a 99% melee weapons fighter.

Here is a WoB on this:

Spoiler

Kurkistan

If Wayne was inside of a speed bubble and punches somebody who's standing outside it, what's happening with his fist and them: are they like sucked into the bubble, or what?

Brandon Sanderson

So, I have... So exiting a speed bubble, while it's going, has weird ramifications on lots of things. It would be really hard to punch somebody through a speed bubble--

Kurkistan

So would the surface like distend around his fist--

*Illustrates with fist "stretching out" invisible film*

Brandon Sanderson

It's going to steal your momentum, but if you actually managed to do it, then-- yes. Anything in the speed bubble that's touching through is counted as being as part of the speed bubble.

Kurkistan

Okay, so his bubble would end here *Draws invisible surface in the air* and his fist would be out there *Illustrates by "punching" arm through the fake surface, demonstrating the fist extending past the bubble while he arm is within*, but still fast?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

Kurkistan

Oh okay, thank you.

Brandon Sanderson

That's how I've imagined it so far.

Kurkistan

But the bubble does end at [the same place still, with the fist extending out past its boundary].

Brandon Sanderson

The bubble does end, yes.

Kurkistan

*Makes pleasantries and goes to leave*

Brandon Sanderson

And when you're punching through, it's going to-- your momentum is gonna'-- you're going to lose momentum and get a ricochet, because you're lurching from-- *notices Kurkistan (very foolishly) acting like he's about to leave* anyway... I'll let you figure that one out on your own.

So touching a weapon in this case treats it as being outside or inside with you?  Or does it make it really difficult to hold and hit someone with a weapon?  I'm trying to picture this one in my head.

Personally I think that whatever is partially in the bubble is fully in the bubble (confirmed) but if that outside end hit something/someone, the bubble would absorb energy and momentum and the strike would be like there was no bubble at all.

Just because I havent seen anything on this specifically I have to ask...

Do you think shardblades would act as any other weapon with time bubbles?  I know aluminum will pop them but I think that is more because of its anti investiture feel cosmere wide.

A shardblade, even robbed of all of its kinetic energy, cuts through everything and even seems to damage stuff like plate without needing large amounts of kinetic energy.

I dont mind the energy being the same as if it were outside the bubble at all. You are still striking faster than anyone outside of the bubble can react. Depending on your weapon you could land multiple multiple strikes on the opponent before they even realize you are attacking them. Shard or not. Robbed of kinetic energy to the point where the hit is treated like normal or not. The mere volume of strikes that could be made would overwhelm just about anyone if they get caught just outside of your bubble while you are striking them from within.

No idea. I think it's likely that a Shardblade might just pop the bubble. It's so invested that it might act like a needle pointing through a balloon, if you try to move a part of the blade outside of the bubble.
