Hello 17th sharders. I'm slightly busy procrastinating working on an anthropology essay, so I thought I'd make this! Inspired by the theatre kids thread, this is a place for anyone who is in a band, was in a band, is a band (I don't know) etc.

I play the alto saxophone in senior band, jazz band, and another small ensemble.

I'm kind of annoyed at my school right now because it really seems like they don't care about the music program. The drama program just went on a huge trip and ours hasn't been approved yet. Also, we've ahad two assemblies all about clubs and stuff. Sports teams, school newspaper, environmental club, they were all mentioned and celebrated. Each individual sports team (there's so many) was listed and applauded, and all they said about us was "And what would our school be without its music program." Literally that's it.

So I just wanted to find some positive vibes from people who think band is awesome and fun and cool and other adjectives.

YAY!

I play trombone in the second band and bass bone in Jazz

Cool! Do you like playing jazz? (I'm kind of split on it which is funny because I play the saxophone)

I really enjoy it, as long as there is some fun parts to it, an currently we are playing 'Pass the hot sauce'. I'm not joking

Nice! Right now we're playing a few John Coltrane songs and different jazz standards from the Real Book.

I play piano for jazz band, euphonium for concert band, and trumpet for pep/marching band. I'm also on a quest to learn as many instruments as possible before I graduate so I also can play trombone, with alto sax and french horn on my next-to-learn list. Our band is really small (1A school moment) but we're actually really good for the size; we've played some grade 5 stuff (with 7 being the highest, college-level music).

I wish our school had a marching band. But alas, we don't really do pep rallies or anything so when would we even play. The only time we perform is twice a year at our music night.

I think small bands are more fun because you can get to know everyone, but also I think the music programs everywhere took a bit hit from the pandemic so I don't have a lot of experience with a bigger band.

We got a new band director last year and he's AMAZING. Our program has like exponentially grown in community recognition and skill level within just the last year. We only do marching in the spring for parades, but we play pep at every home football and basketball games and do two concerts a year + whatever else we're asked to do just by places around my county. It's pretty cool to see. A couple of weeks ago, just in the time we did warm-ups, our band director got two separate calls both asking the band to come play for a thing.

But yeah, that's sad for you :( Still fun though, I'm sure

Definitely still fun. Band is the best!

Sounds cool that you got a new conductor! I'm glad you play at football, I've always wanted to play at sports but we don't really do that here. My Conductor is pretty good although two of the ensembles I'm in are student run so they're more casual.

Cool! We don't have enough flutes in our band.

These are the posters that people from jazz band put up everywhere around the school.

I am...not in band.

But all my friends are in the marching band.

And they left me to go to state :(.

Baritone for marching band, trombone for anything else. I want to convince our director to let us march with trombones…we’ll see. Just imagine sliding the slide while performing slides.

:) Update: They won, and almost swept it (whatever that means, I'm not really sure).

I also have no idea what that means, but cool!

Good news for my school music program : There's going to be a trip to Austria over easter break! It's going to be so fun and I'll probably get to share a room with my best friend and we'll get to see a bunch of musical performances.

My band doesn't do anything like that. :(

Fundraising today for my band trip. I'm working at a grocery store packing bags. I'm sort of extremely nervous because I'm very bad at talking to people and I feel like there's definitely some skill involved in packing groceries and I have never done it before. I am excited for the trip though, so I know that I have to do this because it's way too expensive for me to just ask my parents to pay for all of it (especially when I'm trying to convince them we should go to Dragonsteel next year).

Also, applause and congratulations to @The Stormfather for his performance last Thursday!
