"Why should we trust you?"

Her eyes widened. "That sounds awful."

"Yeah!"

"It is awful. And you should trust me because it's pretty much all you can do. Other than kill me. And I'd really not like that."

Okay.

How are things holding up on your end?

"We could also just... Leave you."

I’m in a white void with… something that looks like you. Where are you?

"Um . . . sure!" She stood also.

"No monsters though, please . . ."

"Of course not. I won't put you in any danger."

50 minutes ago, Ancient Elantrian said:

"That... is smarter than what I was thinking."

The soldier pauses.

"How do I go back?"

"I'd have to take you."

@Halcyon The Only

She pursed her lips. "I dunno. We need to figure out a way to take that army down."

"We can figure that out. But there's too much risk in trusting someone who is working with them."

"I know that. But he probably has some information, at least."

She nodded. "Thanks. Shall we go?"

He stood and led her back to the barn. He opened another door that was on the side next to the one that led inside. This normal door opened back into the hallway. He'd gotten the feeling she'd prefer not to go back through the barn. Or at least she'd be more comfortable.

She followed quietly.

He spread his arms. "Pick any door! There are signs of dangerous ones, so we'll stay away from those."

"Mm, okay."

She walked a little ways down the hallway and picked a random door.

"This one."

The door in question was black ebony inset with silver. Vey stepped up to it and examined the knob, then nodded in satisfaction. "This one should be okay. Open it."

"If he's working against us, how could we trust any information we get?

"We could at least hear him out."

She nodded and opened it slowly, peaking in.

*coughs*

*adjusts glasses*

Peaking, huh?

A round, dusty room awaited her, furnished like an attic. Chairs, chests, and shelves slept beneath films of cobwebs. Large windows let in the sallow yellow light of the dying sun.

"I... okay." He struggled against the violent nature he was assuming, and she could feel his worry.

She gave him a quick hug, eyeing the other person. "You feeling okay? Is the bond too much?"

He shrugged and moved over to a lectern, blowing the dust off the book. It was written in an unfamiliar language, but he picked up the small wooden bear paperweight. Outside the windows was a view of a small town from high above, as if the room were in a tower. The town was quiet and empty, at least for the moment. Beyond it lay stretches of open plains and rolling hills.
