Just a theory I've been sitting on for a while... Was the same event that shattered the Shattered Plains the one that caused the earthquake in Arelon? Brandon has stated

You’ve told us that the earthquake was not caused by natural events.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, but it’s a complicated question because the earthquake was not caused by natural, but the Reod was a natural effect of the earthquake, then... does that make sense? So the Reod is natural, a natural result of... does that make sense? That’s why it was a tricky question.

Mi'chelle Walker

But the earthquake was not natural.

Brandon Sanderson

No, it was not.

So, I think that it could be possible that the event that shattered a giant area with a city, many mountains, hills, and land, is the same event that caused an unnatural earthquake?

I'd be interested to hear what you all think of this!

Bonus theory : Was the event that caused these the binding of Ba-Ado-Mishram? The binding of those hurt everyone on roshar, and so maybe it caused a chain reaction of events across the cosmere?

But aside from that I find it highly unlikely. What force could cause an Earthquake on two different planets in two different star systems, influenced by completely different Shards? And why only on those planets, not on other planets in Cosmere? Shards can't do that that easily as they are bound to the planet they are invested in and can't move to another just like that. No other force could do that. And why? The earthquake on Sel had a clear goal - to destroy Elantrians - but on Roshar it did nothing special - it just destroyed one region which later was just forgotten. Powers of Surgebinders are not location dependent, it didn't affect them. That doesn't make much sense. There was no mention of any Earthquake in relation to the destruction of the Shattered Plains (earthquakes might not be happening on Roshar because there are no tectonic plates, so Rosharans should notice ground shaking). We don't have Cosmere timeline yet, but Elantris book is supposed to be happening early in Cosmere, so those events might coincide in time, but nothing is certain yet. There is no definite proof that those events aren't related, but I don't see any sense in that.

Recently the WoB came up strongly suggesting that Jaddeth, the god of Shu-Dereth, is the Avatar of a certain Shard.  We also know that Jaddeth lives underground and cares for rocks under the earth. One of the recent theories suggests that it was Jaddeth the Avatar that caused the earthquake in Arelon to weaken it and destroy Elantrians. If that's true, then he can't do the same on Roshar as his influence is limited only to Sel, or even just to a certain region of Sel. The WoB (TLM spoilers):

In The Lost Metal, it mentions Autonomy having avatars in other worlds. In Shu-Dereth on Sel, Jaddeth speaks directly to Wyrn, who then propagates his will down the hierarchy-

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

strican

Within the religion, ambition is rewarded, but only if it aligns with the orders of the hierarchy. That sounds similar to the philosophy used in the Set, but replacing Jaddeth with Trell. Is Jaddeth an avatar of Autonomy?

Brandon Sanderson

*chuckles and points at screen in very satisfied way* RAFO. You're a very smart person.

It's [pronounced] "Yaddeth", by the way. That is also one of the Y-J's. ...

So, I will say this. Here's what I'll canonize. There is something happening, and the people there legitimately believe, and have reason to believe, that their god is going to return. And I have said before, many times, that Book 2 of Elantris begins with the return of their god. 'Cause they've said "God can't come back until everybody converts". But they've found a loophole. They're like "well, except those heretics in Elantris. And also that other little place, that tiny little region that's over in the mountains, where they talk about roses, they don't count either. Because they're, um, not actually part of the planet." Um, so. So that's something to look forward to, if I ever get around to writing Dakhor, is the return of Jaddeth, the god of [Shu-Dereth].

Not possible, because by the time of Recreance, the Last Legion already abandoned Odium and went on exile to the Shattered Plains - they most likely went there before Aharietiam. The plains were already Shattered when BAM was imprisoned. And BAM is important only to Roshar, she can't even leave Roshar, not to mention influence Sel.

At the very top of your post, right next to the date of post, you have the "report post" option, just click it, wait for a window to appear and write the message asking to move this entire topic to the "Cosmere discussion" subforum, because it's about Elantris as well as SA.

Other tips if you don't know them:

Spoiler

At the bottom left of a post you will see a "+" icon, a "Quote" link, and (your posts only) and Edit link. On the bottom right you will see an up arrow.

  • The Up Arrow is how you thank people or "like" a post
  • The "Quote" link is exactly that, when you click it the quote will be added to the reply at the bottom of the thread wherever the cursor is
    • So, if you have already started to reply before you decide to quote you can then add the quote before or after your text depending on the cursor location when you click "Quote"
  • The + icon is multi-quote. As you read a thread, if you want to quote multiple items you click that for each post
    • As you click +, you should see a toaster pop-up on the bottom right of the browser window showing how many quotes you will have
    • They are added in the order you click the + icon, not in the original post order, so you can set the order of quotes for your reply
    • When you are ready to reply, click on the toaster pop-up and it will take you directly to the reply section and add the quotes automatically
  • Finally, you can also highlight a small section of a post and, when hovering over the highlit portion, click the "Quote" button that pops up.
  • Also note that you can move quotes after they have been added to your reply.
    • For example, you add a quote and realize there are no empty lines below it for you to type - so you can hit "enter" before the quote to make an empty line then when you hover over a quote you will see a 4-way arrow at the top-left that you can use to drag the quote up (or down)  and move the quote to before the empty line. . .
  • Use the Edit link to make changes to a completed post or add information to your post if it is the most recent (to avoid double posting)
    • Quote buttons will still send a quote to "Reply" if you have a post open for edit, but it is easy to cut/paste the quote to the Edit box
    • Editing allows you to add a reason for the edit (Spelling and grammar (SPAG), formatting, clarification, new information, etc.), but it is not required.
  • Next to Edit you will also find an "options" dropbox, you can use this to hide your post if you want to remove it after posting
  • At the top of a post you will find "Report Post"
    • Use this if you do accidentally double-post (sometimes it's the browser or a slow link that causes a double post) - just leave a message that it was an accidental double post and the Mods can fix it. If it was the first post of a new thread that doubled, they usually can merge the threads if they both have answers, so all of the content is retained.

Hope that helps.

I'm pretty sure the earthquake was because of meddling from Autonomy. There's a theory that shu-dereth was coopted by her.

The shattered plains appear to be a dawncity, and may have been shattered by tonal resonance(perhaps by Odium's arrival on Roshar clashing with thr pure tones of Honor and Cultivation.
