We know that hemalurgy weakens over time, in hemalurgic decay, but if you've seen a decay graph you know that it never reaches 0. does that mean that once something is hemalurgic it will be so for the rest of eternity. That means that you could theoretically turn all metal hemalurgic by constantly diluting then splitting it to make more. Even though the effects you get from it would probably be miniscule, it would still grant a connection to Ruin. Era 2 spoiler.

Harmony for era 2

No need for a spoiler box for Era 2. Yes, Hemalurgic decay never reaches 0. And yes, it would still give you connection to Ruin/Harmony, that's what Wax's earring is, an old inquisitor spike melted and split into multiple smaller spikes, but after 350 years it still holds a slight charge.

If a spike has gone too long without being stored in blood, will it completely lose its charge?

Brandon Sanderson

It will never completely lose its charge.

The earring that Wax has. What is it made of?

Brandon Sanderson

That is an excellent question. That is a really good question. You've been reading very closely. How about this: it is made of... what you're trying to figure out is, if it has a Hemalurgic charge? It does have a slight Hemalurgic charge to it. So I'll give you that. It does have a slight Hemalurgic charge.

Brandon Sanderson

[Inquisitor spikes] got melted down and turned into earrings.

As @alder24 mentioned, yes, Hemalurgic spikes will always retain at least a slight Invested charge, though it's possible that it would eventually lose all practical effects with the exception of cracking open your Spiritweb to outside influence.

It might be interesting to see if the old Inquisitor spikes (now Pathian earrings) could be reforged to make Hemalurgic spikes with greater power. After all, they lose some their Identity when they decay, so maybe there would be no Identity Contamination to prevent spikes made from different people from being combined.

If a Ferring creates a metalmind and then loses his power (for example through Hemalurgy), could he still use his previous-made metalmind ?

Brandon Sanderson

No, he could not. And, unfortunately, the person who stole a bit of his soul would probably be keyed with enough Identity to use his metalmind. :( (This is uncertain, though, based on how much of the soul got ripped off, and how much the spike has decayed.)
