Have you missed me? Of course you havn't. Theres nobody reading this thread lol.

The veneer company offered to send me samples so I could decide the thickness and inexplicably they seem to have sent me two full decks of both thicknesses.

I also found a perfect box. It fits two decks with room for tokens. And a vile thought is taking over my brain

 Veneer Inlaid box .

But lets finish up the cards themselves before bothering with the box

*sigh*

Alright.

So i had a more playable card version printed from https://www.boardgamesmaker.com/

Which arrived yesterday. Its beautiful and lovely and exactly what I wanted it to be.

20230913_171710.thumb.jpg.1f595e214adbfdc8b56c80e6e9a1c7eb.jpg

A total of 72 cards, 35 green 35 blue plus a turn card and a phase card.

They are printed on a wood background I made, and each card type has a slightly different grain.

20230913_171842.thumb.jpg.4c2bb98a2a4a5bfd1cc8fd66517a50de.jpg

Each deck consists of

1 king

2 shardbearers

8 spearmen

4calvary

4 archers

4 squires

4 soulcasters

4 knights

And 4 garrisons

The turn card and phase card are recent additions. Just keep them to the side to keep track of whos turn it is and what phase you are in. The phase card has a march side and a fight side. The turn card is jist the backing in the two colors on both sides.

You can see the phase card above set to march. Here is the flip side.

Additionally, I had them print custom tokens to keep track of your brightlord. Heres the details.

20230913_171858.thumb.jpg.82437cc95c8b54ae91986d64ad723275.jpg

This is an excellent set and very well printed and by all means I should be really happy about it, but ultimately this is a gift and the recipient wasnt too into it, so Im...pretty bummed.

Im in too deep now though, so I guess I have to continue and see it through to the final vision.

Im waiting on specific quotes from the company that does printing on veneer. Its cherry in a .025 mm thickness.

Box is bought. Shellac is bought.

So yeah. Ill keep posting updates. Maybe l can get myself worked up again about it.

Talks about the wood card printing are in the works and im preparing the files to be sent off. Weight , wood type etc have been chosen.

Its time to set my sights on the box to store them in.

I've got the box itself. It is jist large enough to hold the wood card and the cardboard deck with extra space for tokens.

As for layout heres a few sketches. The lid is going to jist be the stormlight archive symbol. Im considering putting a map of roshar on the inside lid.

And how will I do this? I taught myself to do inlay with wood veneer. Amazing. With some additional practice I think I should be able to handle the stormlight symbol.

Then there is hardware. Ive been agonizing over what hardware to use.

Ill make another post about it when ive made a decision.

Alright. Hardware. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I ordered....a bunch.

The first wave has come.

I like the hinges. I especially like the latch.

It comes with these corner guys which I particularly like..

BUT they extend past the lid..

Ill post back in when the next hardware arrives.

MORE HARDWARE

20230924_171134.thumb.jpg.9800244f056ac8239912f6f0251080f4.jpg

I was really hoping the big round hinges would work but they are way too big.

So lets see. First we have this neat square one that actually pairs perfectly with the hinges from the first set. Go figure.

20230924_171902.thumb.jpg.1ee25d4469b502117238b453a06e48aa.jpg

Next we have these two, which are two of the same jist in larger sizes. The big one was WAY to big. I kinda like how absolutely aggressive these things are.

20230924_172129.thumb.jpg.a5919edd09bcd5e71090295c53984597.jpg

And heres a closeup pf the hinges that broke my heart. I REALLY wanted these to work, but alas. Too big.

20230924_172337.thumb.jpg.1a96f0e61d7ecf9442c37cbd5bfa0222.jpg

Since the other corner buts were too big, i got three more kinds that work in slightly different ways. These two work really well20230924_172516.thumb.jpg.58260938b12778863cd673f9f4db27ab.jpg

But the third was still too big

20230924_172717.thumb.jpg.5699b501c2b0fcab734c7c41e6a1eab7.jpg

I got these side brackets which are neat. 20230924_172914.thumb.jpg.b4a1dfec469f50f49bce7908c4a5ed17.jpg

Potentially i could pair ghem with the flat  top thingy

20230924_172933.thumb.jpg.8ecd19c53ed35caf71fc1f55637e6fdb.jpg

I really like the idea of putting the flat ones on the inside like this and making an image insode the lid

20230924_171511.thumb.jpg.bc63b1dca3acaf787525b6024c515df8.jpg

anyway. Thats my hardware haul. Ive got too many choices now.

Ps I sent the files to the printers, so we will see what comes of that.

Theres been some minor technical difficulties with the printing and I had to modify the card files. Its been a crazy back and forth between me and the print shop because of how complicated the order is.

Meanwhile Ive got the box sanded down to 7000 grit sandpaper so its super smoooooth and ready to stain. I gotta get some new stain. I have some walnut tone hanging around from a refinishing project I think I want something closer to cherry so the hardware stands out more.

I've theoretically learned how to line the box inside. I want it to have a nice plush velvet interior to protect the cards.

I got a few unfinished boxes from the dollar store to practice marquetry on, so ill test out lining them. Maybe I can use them to hold dice or something.

Learning marquetry is proceeding. Im almost comfortable enough with it to give the box a go.

Ive figured out how to apply an inlaid image to the inside lid of a box, so thats neat. Ill need to find a map of roshar.

Heres a quick summary of the progress of the entire project

The cards:

Design cards✓

Write rules ✓

Recieve cards

Varnish cards

The box:

Acquire box  ✓

Chose hardware✓

Sand ✓

Stain

Inlay

Line inside of box

Install hardware

Of course this list doesn't include the miriad of steps ive gone through in between like testing materials, playtesting alone on my living room floor and learning entire new skill sets, but you, fair reader have already accompanied me in that journey.

Ill report when I have something interesting to show.

The box is stained! And im almost confident enough to do the inlay.

Still going back and forth with the printer about the details with the cards.

Hoooooly rust. There it is. Its still got to press a while longer, then sand then seal. But holy rust. I actually did it and it looks incredible.

Teaching myself marquetry and making an inlaid design on the lid seemed like a long shot.

But I did it.  And there it is.

Moving on to the inside lid.

Im actually bringing this pipe dream into reality.

Each country is going to be a different kind of wood with the maple as a background.  ( This isnt as impressive as it sounds. I bought a variety pack of vaneer. Ive got like, 20 different woods.) Maybe ill make a small border. Who knows.

20231023_144429.thumb.jpg.b6f6326384c42a4f5ace2f912fec03ee.jpg

Talking with the printers. Trying something different. Ill post the resulting proofs.

Heres how the roshar panel is going today.

I dont posess the skills to make it perfect and handle the islands so im going to go back on it with a wood burner

Behold! A very questionably accurate map of roshar!

My knife slipped and sliced me up good while i was working on iri.

Im not the first to shed blood over the borders in roshar, but i might be the first IRL idiot to do so. 20231027_221349.thumb.jpg.728e0ae1c0eed1d53dbeb8bcc4f8c2cd.jpg

The colors of Rishir and valhav are too similar and muddle the borders a bit but its too late now.

Its drying in the press right now. This weekend ill get to wood burning the details.

Im coming for you, reshi isles

So the way ive been doing this is I work from the back with the finished side face down so that marks and scratches from working on it are on the back of the finished piece.

Ive only made symmetrical things so far so it didnt click that i needed to work backwards.

Better get off to remaking it TuT

Ok this  is turning out for the better.

I used a silver kingdom map anyway. I can use a more recent one now.

Back on track.

Big post today. You kids ready?

First of all heres the most current proofs. Maple Cards PROOF.pdf

They look awesome. Theres going to be a set in cherry and a set in maple instead of having the printing be colored due to some issues with the bleed alignment.

Next. The box. Its almost done and it kicks ass. Looks great sealed and varnished right?

20231110_100139.thumb.jpg.ff57201ac78470a638a6f198cdf78414.jpg

Then here's the money shot:

20231110_100148.thumb.jpg.f7f8aa6a0100af64c6db0442303f3a02.jpg

Yessssss

The map turned out SO GOOD.

20231110_111601.thumb.jpg.81e6399e046dbd7f0177960828514d51.jpg

Its not perfect, but i did my best.

The only thing left to be done for the box is to line the bottom with something.

And the cards are now in production.

This pipe dream is actually coming together.
