The Isochronism he/him Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Wøøøøøøw! So yeah. Across the Spider verse is one of the greatest movies ever created, and here y'all can rant about how awesome it was. And if there's anyone who didn't like it, I'd love to hear why, because this movie really worked for me, and I want to rant a bit but I'll do that later. First I want to hear all of your thought! 2
The Bookwyrm he/him Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 I saw it. It was very, very good. Multiverses are fun. I wish I was more of a Marvel Fan. 1
Lord Gregorio he/him Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 I’d say it was more of a 8/10 or a 7.5/10. Spoiler I didn’t really appreciate the complete cliffhanger it wasn’t a movie really, it was half of one. I understand that it’s a part one but they didn’t advertise that it was.

I understand that it’s a part one but they didn’t advertise that it was. I mean technically they did. The first trailer came out in December 2021, and it states Spoiler Across the Spider-Verse Part 1. Just because you didn't know doesn't mean that they didn't say it was Part 1. That being said, you're far from the first person I've heard voice that complaint. While I personally don't think it's a super valid one given that the information was openly available and advertised over 20 months ago, I can see how it can affect one's enjoyment of the film. I'd also argue the part about it being half of a movie. Did the story in the movie end on a cliffhanger? Yes. But so did Infinity War and The Empire Strikes Back, and they're seen as iconic sequels...well, ESB is. Infinity War will get there with time. But back to the main point - the character arcs in ATSV aren't halfway done. At the beginning of the movie Gwen is trying to find a band to fit into despite being a loner. By the end of the movie, she's learned that she doesn't have to carry her burden alone and that if she can't find a group to belong into, she can make one. Miles on the other hand is looking for a place to belong, but everywhere he looks it's either someone trying to tell him how his story goes (the guidance counselor, Miguel O'Hara, even the other Spider-Men) or its people claiming that he doesn't belong. At the end of the movie Miles refutes their claims and decides to be his own man, outsmarting them in order to escape, overpowering Miguel, and denying their philosophy about canon and "because destiny says so." These are complete arcs, and interestingly the opposite of where the two started. (Gwen finds herself accepting others and wanting a community while Miles finds himself rejecting it and attempting to go at it alone.) That's a complete arc, and that's what makes the movie - at least to me - feel complete even if the plot isn't finished yet. Of course, we need to see Beyond the Spider-Verse to see how it all lands, but the team behind the movies is doing really good so far. 3

This didn't feel to me like half a movie, because you're not left wondering what's going to happen (think Loki.) This felt more like Dune part 1 (which a lot of people also call half a movie, but nobody really says it ends on a cliffhanger.) It felt complete in it's incompleteness. We end with knowing Miles is going to break out, and Gwen is gonna show up eventually, and so on and so forth. Everything is paid off in my humble opinion. That doesn't mean I'm any less anxious for number 3 though. Edited June 21, 2023 by Bondsmith-Edgedancer

Lord Gregorio he/him Posted June 24, 2023 Posted June 24, 2023 Okay. I can see what y’all are saying. I’m mostly just bummed cuz I’m prolly going on a mission and I won’t get to see what happens for 2 years. And what happens might be spoiled for me. Still only like a 8/10 because im a harsh critic. Much better than all the 6/10 movies and stuff I’ve seen lately tho. 1
