Leane Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 I am rereading RoW. I am looking in Hesina's interlude. On pages 1055-1056, Lirin and Hesina are jibing back and forth over how her father hates Lirin (her dad sounds like he has some good common sense there...). Maybe I am just overthinking it, but Lirin's response ruffled my feathers. Hesina thinks her dad may be dead, and Lirin says he can't be because: "He'd be haunting me, obviously....Living as a shade in the storms, calling for my blood." I do not have Stormlight e-books, so I cannot do a search for the word shade. Is this word thrown around often in the series? Using both words SHADE and BLOOD in the same sentence was just an interesting choice of words to me. TIA to any who can offer input.

Jn819 she/her Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 29 results for "shade" in RoW, only the one you mentioned means anything but color or shadow. 25 results in OB, none with this meaning. 39 results in WoR, pay dirt at the end of I-2 (Ym the Iriali cobbler Truthwatcher whom Nale kills): Quote The man in silver spun him around. He looked like a shade in the night, a silhouette against the black sky. Late in Chapter 76: The Hidden Blade: Quote The bridgemen crowded in around him. Hopefully they hadn't seen Kaladin following Shallan with his eyes, straining to hear her voice. Renarin stood, like a shade, at the back of the group. The bridgemen were coming to accept him, but he still seemed very awkward around them. Of course, he seemed awkward around most people. 43 results in WoK, including page 72: Quote Occasionally, light would flash without the thunder. The slaves would groan in terror at this, thinking about the Stormfather, the shades of the Lost Radiants, or the Voidbringers--all of which were said to haunt the most violent highstorms. Page 164, when Kaladin sees Gaz on his way to the Honor Chasm: Quote Even a sheltered basket could get torn free. Some people believed that the shades of the Lost Radiants haunted the storms, stealing spheres. Page 267, when Kal and Tien are hunting lurgs and he's ruminating on the hillside broken by a recent highstorm: Quote Were the Voidbringers behind the destruction, or had it been the shades of the Lost Radiants? This makes me wonder if the Radiants who participated in the Recreance left visible cognitive shadows when they died, or if knowledge of Threnody was relatively common before the Recreance and the sudden absence of the Radiants felt much like the jitteriness of walking past shades, or if the legends are more like the real world's stories of shades and ghosts. I'm leaning towards the last as the most likely. 2

Well, there is Shadesmar, other than that there isn't any shade mentioned in RoW. I highly doubt that from all people it's Lirin who is Cosmere aware and knows what Shades are. There are likely some stories or legends of people turned into Cognitive Shadows, like Heralds and Fused, and maybe even stories of the land of the dead, where people turns into vengeful shades and this is likely the source of "ghost stories" on Roshar. But I admit this is interesting use of words. There are however more clearer references to Threnody, RoW ch 64: Spoiler Quote "The sand originated offworld. It is only one of such amazing wonders that come from other lands—I have recently obtained a chain from the lands of the dead, said to be able to anchor a person through Cognitive anomalies. I fail to see what use it could be to me, as I am unable to leave the Rosharan system. But it is a priceless object nonetheless." - Epigraphs 1
Elder Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 The ghosts are said to haunt the high storms, and it’s mentioned in the Way of Kings IIRC. Granted, there’s a lot of investiture being thrown around in those, so a cognitive shadow in there would hardly surprise me. There’s also some weird giant Spren, maybe great shell action going on? IIRC, Dalinar flips one off in one of his Oathbringer flashbacks.
Jn819 she/her Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Pretty sure this is a case of accidental double-post. I had a bit of deja vu and thought "did my reply not post properly?" But no, here it is: 3 hours ago, Elder said: The ghosts are said to haunt the high storms, and it’s mentioned in the Way of Kings IIRC. IIRC, Dalinar flips one off in one of his Oathbringer flashbacks. There are legends that the "shades of the Lost Radiants" haunt the Highstorms, yes. It's unclear whether they actually left visible Cognitive Shadows, whether people at the time knew about Threnody, or it's just convergent evolution of mythology (as far as I can tell).
