Can a Kandra Impersonate an Inanimate Object?

Delightful

Recommended Posts

So far we've only seen Kandra as humans, and then TenSoon as a dog and a horse, however they do inhabit True Bodies which are not made of flesh. Could a kandra theoretically impersonate  a table or a sword, or a tree or something? Do we know their limits?

Just for some context, this came from a crazy-WoR-speculation discussion, from the scene where

Kaladin's sitting in jail and Wit appears. The text goes something like "Wit hadn't been there a moment before. Wait. Had the  bench been there a moment before?" If Wit's sitting on the bench it's unlikely to be Lightweaving, could it be a kandra? (I fully admit this isn't likely, but it got me curious).

Apologies if this has been asked before, there's so much speculation and especially WoB around that it's a bit scary to sift through. So I'm being a little lazy and just asking :)

I think it might be possible, if the kandra was skilled enough to ingest the object and form its muscles inside the object, using it like an exoskeleton. This would probably limit it to hollow objects with enough room inside for the kandra. I would think the kandra may need an aairhole or some access to oxygen. And of course it will need to eat. (and how do kandra pass waste?)

It may be plausibe with specially designed objects, specifically tailored for a kandra to inhabit. (True-lamps and true-rugs)

Unless they were hiding inside of something I think that it would be very hard for them to imitate inanimate objects. They may be able to look like one, but making fur is very different then making mettle, clay, or stone. At best they'd only look like the object from far away, then when you come closer you relies it is made of flesh

I suppose, in the land of fiction, anything is possible. The Kandra exhibited some snobbery. As much as most of them hated humans, it seemed a great offense to be asked to become a dog. I'm not sure they would be enthusiastic to assume the form of an object.

I like that your mind questions such things. Sometimes I give objects around the house "personalities". We make our own fun here in the world of Lurgs. The cocooned life demands it. Now I will graft your Kandra notion into my daily experience. They will probably keep all the spren company. I'm going to need a larger cocoon.

Well, their cells can replicate other animal cells, so they can become different animals. I don't think their cells could replicate inanimate matter. they could, however, be pretty good at mimetism; for example, a kandra could eat a chamaleon to learn to make color-changing cells, andd then he could replicate a sofa, using the springs as a sort of skeleton, and some sort of cell that has a similar consistency to the real stuff.

However, it would not be the real thing, and it woul not work as well. In particular they could not replicate any rigid part.

Very intresting theory.. i do admit it is far-fetched for that bench to be a Kandra.. if anyone would be able to tell it would most likely be Wit- his lightweaving ablilities could just be more powerful or just Kaladins delirium setting in like usual.

However PROPS.. this does make our kandra hunt much more difficult not just looking to see if they are impresonating people/animals but as well as objects.. hmmm?

It does lend a little more credence to Stroniax's theory that the Kandra worldhopper is the Stick.

The do impersonate hair and fur. As for the bench I think it might have been Soulcast.

No, they don't. When TenSoon imitated Kelsier in HoA, he had to be bald because he didn't have Kelsier's hair with him. Also, for the wolfhound, he needed the fur of the wolfhound.

I guess where I am having trouble is, if a Kandra uses bones as a framework in which to construct muscles and tissue, then what would be the framework for a chair? A chair is a chair. Unless the Kandra is going to turn into the cushion for the chair? But technically the cushion doesn't have a framework itself. Which makes me think that you wouldn't be able to have jellyfish kandra or octopus kandra either. Though technically they could use the beak as a reference persay.....

I was thinking if the kandra swallows the chair, it uses the chairs eg wooden framework to base itself on. But as I write this I realise the wood would splinter as it was swallowed. Could it Perhaps use strong bones from an elephant or something as the basis? I think this is turning into 'can they use mAterial from one body to create something different' which I'm fairly sure can happen, at least with mistwraiths.

Or do you think a kandra could swallow a post whole and then rearrange it inside itself to support fabric etc for a chair?

If they specially constructed a true body with "bones" that mimicked the framework of a chair, the Kandra could undoubtedly form a chair-like shape around it without too much difficulty.  However, the Kandra is still made of flesh, and the chair would definitely not feel or look like wood.

On the other hand, if it were a comfy, cushioned leather chair, like the one I'm sitting in right now... they might be able to pull that off.  Leather is, after all, animal skin, and a Kandra might be able to impersonate the texture.  The chair itself would still be soft, as it is made of muscle and flesh, but since the chair is supposed to be cushioned, that would not necessarily be a problem.  Of course, the Kandra would have to remain absolutely still at all times, which would require phenomenal willpower.  Also, since it can't digest a chair to learn the shape, the Kandra would have to have incredible skill.  Finally, to learn anything useful, it would also need sensory organs- the chair would have to have an ear and/or an eye on it somewhere.  This could be a serious impediment to stealth.  Additionally, the Kandra is all of one piece, so the leather covering the chair would have to be all of one piece; the Kandra might be able to simulate the look and feel of stitches, but they would not be real stitches.  Thus, the chair is unlikely to hold up to close scrutiny.

But who looks closely at chairs?

All that aside, the subterfuge would need to be short term.  Like any other life form, Kandra need to eat and excrete waste.  If you find your chair raiding your fridge, the jig is up.

It would be a bit ham handed to have the chair in the corner, which has gone unsuspected for years, be revealed to be a well hidden kandra. But if it is properly... ... actually no. It would be amazing!

As a prologue scene, to introduce the character of a badass Kandra: a self righteous noble who, over the course of five-eight pages, is characterised as someone you love to hate. So as to not bore you, lets just say Professor Umbridge (I hated her a lot more than Voldermort). After a full day of being absolutely retched to everyone, she reclines on her comfy leather chair, which begins to wobble and shake. And becomes an amorphous blob that eats her alive.

The idea of a Kandra having the ability to mimic a leather lounge is the sort of thing that would be a bit too left field, if introduced in the last act. But it would be great twist to start off with.

P.S. how observant, of the Contract, are the Kandra likely to be with the Second Generation going rogue at the end of the third book?

Depends what form the contract takes AoL era. I'm not sure of that, though I'm sure someone round here is :)

Also, I'm loving the story idea :)

Totally picturing a side story, where a young kandra who had spent most of its life in the home land goes off to explore the world and ultimately infiltrates a prison. While investigating, it is just about to be discovered so it dives into a room. Not having the bones on hand to change shape, the kandra sees a chair in the middle of the room. Thinking to itself "perfect!" it quickly molds around the chair. Shortly after two officers dragging in a person in orange, throw the orange garbed individual into the chair and straps him in. At first concerned that it would be discovered, the kandra relaxes once it realizes no one is paying any real attention to the chair, so all that remains is to wait for everyone to leave. Another person comes in dressed all in black, with a pin of the survivor on his lapel. He begins to talk to him all about the survivor and meeting him. Hmmm, must be a religious service the young kandra thinks. This may take longer than originally expected, but ah well still just have to wait it out. Then for some reason the kandra starts to feel a humming coming from the chair it is using as a frame. This is odd, the kandra thinks. Curious, out of sight of the people, the kandra forms a nose and take a whiff. Why do I smell burning........
