Philip Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 Hi! I read the first and second eras of Mistborn. Then I jumped to the Stormlight Archive, and I’ve just finished Rhythm of War. Now I’m debating about where to go next in the Cosmere. Maybe Elantris? Any other recommendations? 1

If you have read the three novellas (The Secret History, Dawnshard, and Edgedancer) that expand the two series you mentioned, then Elantris or Warbreaker would be next. The Emperor's Soul is nice to read after Elantis, as it is set on the same planet. The first of the Dusk, and the Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell can be read any time, I think. 1
0 alder24 Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 Warbreaker/Elantris Edgedancer (part of Arcanum Unbounded) Dawnshard The Secret History (part of Arcanum Unbounded) The Emperor's Soul (part of Arcanum Unbounded) the rest of the novellas in Arcanum Unbounded White Sand (graphic novel) Both Warbreaker and Elantris could be read first, as they are quite important to the Cosmere. And also they are the biggest books remaining. The later three are short (100 page long) novellas, and are happening between Stormlight Archive books (Edgedancer and Dawnshard), and Mistborn (The Secret History), so they are nice little follow-ups for the books you've already read. The Emperor's Soul is also around 100 page long novella. 1
0 Captain Coffee Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 This is all great advice, but Warbreaker is my favorite. I'd do that one. 1

0 Philip Posted December 21, 2022 Author Posted December 21, 2022 (edited) Thanks for all the replies!! I have Arcanum Unbounded and read Edgedancer on it first. To be specific, I “read” it and all the other books on Audible - listening to the audiobooks. Love Michael Kramer and Kate Reading’s performances. I’ve found the rest of Arcanum Unbounded a bit hard to follow in audiobook format…feel like it takes the first half of the stories to figure out where I am and what I’m doing, and I keep falling asleep in the middle and getting lost. Maybe that one I should have done in printed form. I listened to Shardcast for the first time last night, the episode just after Rhythm of War came out and it was fun to hear other folks discussing the book I’d just read. There’s a bit too much content for me to find time for listening to much more (I have 3 kids). Does anyone know if there’s any kind of a “general roundup overall chat about the Cosmere for non-regular listeners” or something like that out there? I had never considered a connection between Kelsior and the Ghostbloods, so that took me by surprise. I haven’t zoomed out that far yet. I didn’t catch Odium’s grooming of Kal either when I was reading, so I wanted to go back to that part again too. Anyway - thanks again for all the replies! I think I’ll try Warbreaker next. Seems like that one is a dramatized version on Audible rather than Kramer/Reading. Anyone have thoughts on that who’ve listened to the audiobooks? Everything I’ve done in the Cosmere so far have been Kramer/Reading (as well as the final Wheel of Time books, which is where I first found Sanderson). Is there a Kramer/Reading version of Warbreaker that I’m not finding? Also I don’t find a Kramer/Reading Elantris. Maybe my next step in the Cosmere needs to part ways with their audio versions? Thanks! Edited December 21, 2022 by Philip

Yes unfortunately neither of those are narrated by Kramer and Reading. The Warbreaker one I have was narrated by James Yaegashi (was not a fan of his narration). There is a Graphic Audio version which can get expensive and then looks like a newer regular version narrated by Alyssa Bresnahan who I have not listened to before but looks like she gets good reviews. I was not crazy about the narrator for Elantris either but it was better than the original Warbreaker narrator. Easy though to get spoiled with Kramer and Reading! 1

Had to make an account in Audiobooks.com to get it, but after listening to a sample of the Graphic Audio version, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to handle the background audio. Who puts vocal audio behind an audiobook?? I don’t know…some people commented they liked it overall, but I don’t think I’d be able to handle it. Bresnehan has a kinda slightly-nasal friendly mom next door reading a book to you vibe. Nothing like Kramer/Reading, but I don’t dislike it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to hear more of her books though. Just glad I found a doable version. Strangely enough, the audiobooks.com cover says it’s narrated by Yaegashi, though I never found his version.

Consider that fortunate lol. It wasn't terrible but he did this weird "surfer guy" accent for one of the main characters that drove me crazy. Not that it matters now but the Alyssa Bresnahan version is on Audible it is just hidden underneath the Graphic Audio version a bit. I actually just bought it for the $7.49 price since I had the Kindle version and have been meaning to re-listen to it. Thanks your question prompted me to look!

I think I’ll end up rereading it in printed form…I miss a lot in this reading. Maybe it’s me, but either the writing or the narrator makes it harder to stay focused.
