Another theory here, so I was wondering if it would be possible for there to be a anti-version of investiture, shards, and Adonalsium.  We see anti-light in RoW and its effect on normal light and invested beings, being capable of killing Heralds, Fused, and Radiant spren.  This aligns with anti-matter in real life where, if it comes into contact with its opposite (like oxygen and anti-oxygen) it explodes in a massive explosion.  This symmetry might suggest that there could be an ultimate foe in the form of some sort of anti-adonalsium which could be a reason that they need to bring the shards back together and reform adonalsium.  What are your thoughts on this?

I don't really think so, as it is mentioned in ROW that the anti-light exploded because it was under pressure in the gemstones. There being general anti-investiture I could see, though.

@Rune, let me see if I have this right, is the concept that if you can have anti-investiture, could it scale upwards until it became possible to have sentient anti-Investiture and eventually to the level of a Shard or Adonalsium itself?

I think this could exist theoretically, but this would be on a level of Cosmere creation lore, if/how/when Adonalsium was created. If I understand Navani's methodology, creating anti-light requires intentionally creating something opposed to the existing Investiture by using the original as a starting point. Raboniel notes that collecting enough anti-Voidlight to destroy Odium is practably impossible. If such anti-Shards/Adonalsium exist, I doubt they would have been manufactured as such and I would guess they would have had to been part of a larger Creation story of the Cosmere.

I'm pretty sure Brandon had said that he does not want to open the can of worms that is Doctor Who or Back to the Future style time travel, and I'm guessing parallel dimensions are out for similar reasons. Could Brandon have an Anti-Adonalsium? Possibly, but the question I would start asking would be what storytelling he would be able to do with those components that he couldn't do now? Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better, I say as I read another mammoth of a book from Brandon. Could he pull it off? Yes, but getting to that scale might mean wrapping up the Cosmere, which I don't want for decades.

I think there could be a way for Brandon to incorporate Anti-Shards on a mechanical level, but I doubt he would do it from a storytelling perspective. Having something that is de facto opposed to a Shard probably has less interesting conflicts to explore than two conflicting agendas like Ruin and Preservation.

I will say that I am very curious to what sentient Anti-Investiture looks like and how it acts. I wouldn't be surprised if we got that, but I don't think we would get something on the scale of a Shard.

@Duxredux Yes this was more of what I was thinking but you’re right when you say that Brandon wouldn’t from a storytelling perspective.  I was just trying to think of what it would look like if something like them existed.  I agree that we might see some sentient anti-investiture as that seems like it could fit in with the Cosmere as a whole  without stretching things too far.

What if this ani investiture is related to Fainlife?

Brandon has said there is no anti Uncle Andy. But if Uncle Andy is a shard of a larger God then there could be many Uncle Andy's. One per galaxy.

Given the Cosmere is a dwarf galaxy Uncle Andy would be a minor god within the universe.

But Brandons not going to write about these concepts and is sticking to the Cosmere.

Yeah that's what got me thinking of this in the first place but I'm pretty sure they are something different.

Yes, they are different. Uli Da, the former vessel of Ambition, is Sho Del, part of the fain ecosystem. Therefore, fainlife is not anti-invested, or related to anti-investiture in any meaningful way.

This is interesting, how do you know Uli Da is of Fainlife?

Is Uli Da a Sho Del?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah.

Chaos

Can we post that?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah you can go ahead and post that. That's fine.

Chaos

I figured that from the...

Brandon Sanderson

Right, the naming convention makes it really obvious.

Chaos

But that's not posted on the Dragonsteel sample so...

Brandon Sanderson

Right. But that's canon. It's pretty obvious to me... And so it's fine with me canonizing it. I mean, I've been coy with it for years. But when I say there are Shards that aren't human. There are three races on Yolen... Adding the math together is going to get you a pretty obvious answer.

Well there would have to be an anit something for the shattering to happen in the first place right?  Couldn't kill it but made into into 16 somethings.  Fun theory

Invocation is right, Uli Da is Sho Del,

And this talks about Sho Del are Fain.

Would Sleepless be the 3rd race native to Yolen? Man, Dragon, and Sleepless?

Brandon Sanderson
The Sho Del are the third race from Yolen.

celestialwolf157
I've heard you mention the Sho Del a few times, though only that they were the third race on Yolen. Is there anything else you could reveal about the Sho Del that's not too spoilery?

Brandon Sanderson
The big thing happening on Yolen (and major plot points of both Dragonsteel and The Liar of Partinel, neither of which I decided to publish) is two competing ecologies on one planet. An entire invasive ecology (called "fain") and the regular one, familiar to us. The Sho Del fill the niche in the fain ecosystem that humans fill in ours.
