Rima spent some time considering, then grabbed onto his arm.

Josten took a deep breath, then zipped them out of his muffin closet. It hadn't taken him long to decide where to take her; there weren't a whole lot of peaceful, quiet places nowadays.

It had taken him a bit to convince himself that he could show her his island.

When he teleported, he had to be fairly familiar with the location; he had to have an image of it in his mind.

He had never seen his island before when he first pictured it and visited. It was a bit reckless to try and visit a place he wasn't even sure existed, but all had turned out well. In fact, a small part of him liked to think that he'd actually created the island by imagining it. No one else seemed to know it existed; it was completely apart from everything.

He and Rima landed on the shore, just in front of the dock, where a crudely-made boat sat tied; half sunk. The sea was a clear grayish-blue, and the sand was almost perfectly white. There wasn't a sound beyond that of the waves lapping up against the shore; it was perfectly still.

"Here we are."

And you're completely fine!! Take as much time as you need. I just thought it was funny that I was free as soon as no one else was. Let me know if there's anything I can do :))

"This...is my island. I come here when everything's too much, or when I run out of people to bother."

"Well...yeah, for a bit. Not forever. I don't even let myself stay here forever. The world's out there for a reason, everyone has to deal with it." Josten sat down on the sand, looking out over the ocean. "Some of us are just lucky to get a break every so often."

I was not expecting Josten to be this smart...he was just supposed to be a teasing, annoying, joking dude.

"You don't, though. Have to deal with it, I mean. But you do anyways."

"Why not? Why live by the rules everyone else makes for you, if you don't have to?" Rima seemed to be talking to herself more than Josten as she spoke.

Posted

"Because life without rules quickly becomes chaos; without any purpose." His voice fell quiet. "Trust me; I've tried it."

"That doesn't exactly work, either. You need other people, a community, in order to have life."

Let's find out.

Before getting to the roof Randy found another person. A man with a backpack who looked frustrated. Considering the current state of affairs, Randy couldn't blame him. However, he stopped running in a blink and quickly became cautious, reaching for the gun on his belt. He didn't like using the thing, and didn't intend to either, but it was good to be safe. After all, not only was this man up here when every capable pair of hands was needed downstairs, but he wasn't wearing a uniform.

"Excuse me, can you be here?" Randy asked, trying to get as much info as he could with his eyes. A spark of suspicion added to the mix when he noticed the spikes sticking out from the bottom of his backpack.

“I…uh…yes?” Ryker stammered. He stumbled back from the shock the unknown person.

“I’m one of the new interns for the engineering and flight maintenance programs.” he said not that convincingly. “I was sent here to get some…” he paused scanning the shelves for anything even remotely related to engineering, “industrial tape.” He blurts out, grabbing the tape off of one of the shelves of the broom closet.

“I got lost once the fighting and shaking started. Could you please help me find my way back?” Ryker asked with hesitation.

Just then another tremor shock the keep, and one of his broken lock picks fell out of the door, and onto the stone floor with a metallic tinkling.

“Oh (insert world’s swear word here).” Ryker thought to himself.

Randy had to point his gun openly at the man now. "I'm guessing you lost your keys then, good thing you're so resourceful."

Another rumble shook the building. Honestly, under the circumstances he could only point the gun for show. With so many tremors it was impossible to keep a steady hand.

Randy tried to look serious, but really, it was a broom closet. If he wasn't a spy his worst crime was opening a storage room without a janitor's permission. If he was a spy it was a lot worse, but if that was the case he was uninformed enough that he hadn't stolen anything important yet, so far as Randy could see.

Either way, it wasn't his choice how to deal with him. But, if he was the person he saw outside, maybe he could kill two birds with one stone. After all, the attack had happened right as he appeared. Could there be any relation? It was worth a shot.

"Would I be losing my time if I asked what else you were looking for in there?"

“It’s this,” Ryker said with a sigh. He unclipped a metallic cylinder from his belt, and held it out to the man holding him at gun point.

“Please take the bait.” he thought to himself.

Randy looked at the item the stranger was holding. He hesitated, years of training told him not to move. Randy didn't recognize the object after all. However for the second time today, and maybe the second time in years, curiosity got the better of him. He extended his hand.

“Yes!” Ryker cheered internally as he handed off the cylinder, and he took a step back.

“I know you’re just doing your job and all, but I’ve really got a quota to fill.” Ryker said as he tapped into his magic. He felt the pressure inside the canister wanting to be free, and he helped release it.

One end of the cylinder flew across the room, and a huge plume of smoke and steam soon followed, filling most of the floor.

Ryker held his breath and dashed towards the stairs, and took the turn to go down farther. He really hoped that one of the steam engineering rooms would be down there.

"I had those. I don't want to lose them again."

Josten fell quiet for a moment, then softly said "Losing someone is a lot better than never having them in the first place."

Randy couldn't help coughing, though he did drop to the floor as a reflex. That was magic. At least he hadn't seen him press any detonator. If it was magic, what kind was it?

Wait, he couldn't lose time thinking about that. He heard the other guy dart the same way Randy had come. He covered his mouth and nose with his shirt, then stood up, guiding himself by sliding his other hand along the wall. He was going as fast as he could but that wasn't saying much, at least if he wanted to avoid tripping down the stairs.

Sure enough, by the time he was out of the smoke cloud on the floor below, he couldn't see nor hear any sign of the mysterious man.

"Shoot." He started running anyways. He'd check out the floor, then give up and resume his previous plan. If the man had gone for the ground floor there would be no way to find him in the commotion. But if he was still looking for his objective, then there would be a chance.
