We know that Brandon has said that many cultural patterns have been borrowed from Asian nations. I just noticed one. Imperialist Japan, from the late 1800s to mid 1900s would conquer land, then give it to the emperor, who would distribute it among the lord based on merit and contribution to conquest.

Similar to King Elhokar and the high princes with gemhearts

I'd say that is just common human practice going back at least to the Roman practice if giving conquered land to retired soldiers.

Well historically Japan was a feudal nation. Land was taken and owned by Lords, not the emperor

Didn't each individual Highprince take all the gemhearts they got, and Dalinar wanted to make it so that Elhokar got to decide?

I think this was how it was originally, when Plateau Runs were first come first serve.  iirc once Dalinar was made Highprince of War, he scheduled highprinces for each run, and gemhearts went to Elhokar who doled them out fairly.

Tried to anyway, several Highprinces, specifically Sadeas didn't listen.

Yuh.  I know some did follow though - I remember one scene in particular where Sadeas gets to the gemheart before the scheduled highprince and chucks it at his feet when he makes light of that lol

Land being given by the King to lords under their rule is the basis of Feudalism, and Alethkar is (slash was) a feudal society. The relationship between the Highking and the Highprinces is more similar to the relationship between the King of France and his dukes, as the Highking doesn't have the same religious basis of rule that the Emperor of Japan did (i.e. being the ancestor of one of the gods, and being treated as a god himself). We see the Highprinces immediately go back to fighting amongst themselves as soon as the King leaves, and actively trying to depose him when they think they have a chance.
