By the definition of mammal/ the classification system we use, they are mammals. They certainly would not be able to survive on earth, our classification system says nothing about gems, But they would be considered mammals.

They would be the only ones native to Roshar. However they are so different as to be classified as something else entreily. They grow Chitin, they have gemhearts, it's implied, but not confirmed that they do not produce milk, etc.

Enlarged breasts is a secondary sexual characteristic, how about that? In humans it is generally considered by biologists to be a form of displaying readiness and desire to mate. So, not necessarily there for the babies, if that makes sense. And I think it is a similar thing with mateform. Footnote: Brandon initially gave a RAFO and only stated that it was something he has considered and it may or may not be addressed in the books. YouTube Spoiler Stream 3 (Dec. 16, 2021) This is more talking about the aesthetics of it in forms other than mate form. They do not need breast for practical reasons, so why do they still have them in other forms. Mateform still has a practical reason for having them.
Humble_Knight
I really like the idea of the Rhythm of Honor being heartbeats. Feels thematic, cool and a way for humans to hear the rhythm in order to reforge the splinters. That said I much prefer the idea that the Stormfather is killed during the battle of champions due to Dalinar's choices. I am currently of the opinion that Dalinar will become a Blackthorn Fused as part of a new deal after the battle of Champins ends in a draw, which forces both sides to create a new deal. Maybe this deadeye-ifies the Stormfather or he pulls a sword out of the storm, breaking his word. I do think whatever happens to cause this will be done with the Stormfather's decision, solidifying the choice Maya talked about at the end of the book
