Oh we can come up with a better team name than "Team 4!" At least change the "Team" to bridge :)

@Xavier Iriarte @luckat @Nohadon @Shqueeves, are you all on Discord?

Signups are now closed.

All Team PMs and Google Docs have been made and sent - if you haven't received one, and you think you should have, then let me know. (The spec doc will go up with the rest of the puzzles.)

Due to some issues the release of the first wave of puzzles will occur at a slightly later time: four hours from now, at 2am EST. (Sorry, America.)

Sanderson Puzzlehunt: Scadrial Round

Ash falls from the sky, and ruins your perfectly good jacket.

"Damnation," says the white-haired man. "Not where I wanted to end up at all. We need to get out of here. And fast. I'd use a perpendicularity, but..." He turns to you. "I have no idea how I'll get all of us through. I hate to say this, but I'm out of ideas. You got anything?"

"Maybe," you say, "these puzzles can help us."

"Oh, of course. How utterly convenient."

A Note On Indexing

Several of the puzzles in this round use a method of solving known as indexing: where you are given a list of words (or, more likely, the words are hinted at) and a list of numbers (call them n), and you take the nth letter of each word to spell the answer. Sometimes, however, you will need to rearrange the words somehow.

A Note On Puzzle Order

Originally, the puzzles were going to be released by era: the four Era 1 puzzles would come first, followed by the four Era 2 puzzles. However, given that one of the Era 1 puzzles has produced some alarming last-minute issues, I've pulled forward one of the Era 2 puzzles to serve in its place while I attempt to fix it. Thank you for your time.

Scadrial Meta

"How do we get off of Scadrial?" says the white-haired man. "Do you have any ideas?"

Spoiler

Since you have no resources, you'd do better to find some alternatives.

Puzzle #1: Travelling Blues

Spoiler

While going through your drawing gallery, you notice that some of your pictures appear to be missing.

Note: the photos are listed in chronological order of places visited, not in the final order.

DAY 1 (orange file):
10: I started my journey at this beautiful peninsula, looking over the waves. What beautiful sights would this place hold? I resolved myself to visit every (named) location on my way, and never to skip any.
11: The eight-part residence of which the basin bears its name. I thereby realized that I may be returning to this place often on my journey - thus, I shall not be rementioning any locations that I have already visited (although I will mention every new place I visit).
13: Named for the mount that once was in its place. Now a rather quaint city.

DAY 2 (indigo file):
7: After forging my own trail for quite some time (my original mode of transportation far behind me), I came upon this town. Famous for its fruits, apparently, although organised crime has recently taken up residence in the area.

DAY 3 (red file):
3: I stopped forging my own trail and rejoined my old travelling method here. While the foothills of the southern mountains are nice, there is little else to say.
5: The river is more interesting than the city. A rather nondescript day, unfortunately.

DAY 4 (yellow file):
5: While I would not normally note a repeated location, the tall skyscraper is rather spectacular, so I thought I would keep it for posterity.

DAY 5 (white file):
4: More mountains! The stop here is named after the range, and I do not believe it has any such name on its own. The views are rather marvellous here. You can almost see the capital to the southwest.

DAY 6 (blue file):
6: The city here is very near to the coast, but unfortunately it cannot match the beauty of where I started.
8: I visited the metal markets here. The name comes from such an interesting culture, with their own unique heritage.

DAY 7 (green file):
3: Its namesake of the pre-empiric hero is more interesting than the city itself. A shame.
5: The largest city in this area, and famous for its law enforcer that turned criminal.

DAY 8 (violet file):
3: The Pathian Gardens are beautiful this time of year.
5: And, finally, where my journey ends. This place has been a ghost town for a time, and the red clay soil still holds signs of violence.

Puzzle #2: Inscriptions

Puzzle #4: Relativity

Spoiler

As you zigzag back and forth between the rooms, you begin to discover a strange message.

On the high hill, just outside of town, where the weeds grow tall and and winding and snare unwary travelers, there is a house. It is an odd house - at first its shape may arrest you, but once you get inside there is quite another thing that may concern.
In every room of the house, there is a clock. That alone may not seem odd, and when you are standing next to each piece of machinery, the second hand ticks by at a reliable rate of one second per second. But it is when you look through the other doorways, at the clocks in the other rooms, that you begin to realize that something it is afoot. Those clocks do not appear to run at one second per second - they may be drastically faster or slower, like they are contained within a Pulser or Slider's bubble. Indeed, stepping between the thresholds of rooms gives a similar feeling of stepping outside the warped reality of bendalloy, and when you look back on the clock that just moments ago ran at a normal pace, it may now be doing something entirely different.
This all speaks to the odd nature of bendalloy - that you always perceive your current location to be running at 'normal' time, even when you are in fact the one going fast or slow. If you imagine two rooms, the first running at twice the normal speed, and the second running at thrice - when the clocks are viewed from the first room, they appear as normal and 1.5x speed respectively - when viewed from the second room, they appear as two-thirds and normal speed. Thus, even if you choose to ignore the fact that I have never seen any Allomancers at work within the house, the very existence of such a strange place is remarkable.
Following are my notes on my brief experiences in the house. I pray that I need never return, for it was something that you would wish to avoid.

I entered the house in the very northwestern room, in what could be called the front door. The clock in my room was of a reliable one second per second, at least as far as I perceived it then, but through the doorway to the east that clock was running at one-quarter speed.
I went south and east, and took different measurements. To the west, the clock ran at four times the speed of my own - to the north, it ran one-and-a-fourth seconds per second, and to the south it ran at one quarter speed.
Travelling again, to the east and then the north, I perceived the clocks to the west and south to both be running at one-half speed. Going east, and looking back at the room I was just in to the west, that clock appeared to be running at one-half speed as well. Going south, and looking back again to the north, that clock appeared to be going at four-fifths speed.
I went south, and looked through the southern doorway. The clock through there was running seven times faster than mine. Then I went west. To the east the clock ran at one-fifth speed, to the north it ran at one-third, and to the south it ran at one-and-a-third speed. I presently marked a bit of chalk on the floor of this room, and went west twice. Looking to the east, ignoring the room in the middle and observing the chalk-marked-room, I confirmed that the clock in that room was running at the same rate as the one I was in presently.
I was near the exit, so I only took a few more measurements. I went south, and observed that the clock to the north was running at three-fourths speed, and the one to the east was running at one-half speed. Then I went east and south, and left the unsettling place through the southern door.

Puzzle #8: Gossipers

Spoiler

You are attending a series of balls: one of the many in the Final Empire. These ones are rather small in comparison to some, with only ten other attendees: two from each of five houses. They are, in alphabetical order by last name:
 - Arriev Blanches
 - Shan Blanches
 - Ardous Geffenry
 - Crews Geffenry
 - Idren Lekal
 - Tyden Lekal
 - Ferson Penrod
 - Salmen Penrod
 - Elyen Venture
 - Eptres Venture
All nobles love to gossip. Interestingly, each of the people at the ball behave in a deterministic fashion - when they learn a secret, they follow their own rules as to who they tell it to. These rules always remain the same, although they may be conditional (i.e. they behave differently depending on who knows the secret, who told them, etc). This of course means that if you tell someone a secret, the same people will learn it in the same order, every time.
Each hour, a person knowing a secret can tell one other person that secret (*), and continue each hour until they decide to stop and tell no-one. Once that person has stopped, they will not start telling anyone that secret ever again (**) - even if they are told that secret again (since they already know it). Similarly, if they are halfway through their behaviour and are told that secret again, they will just continue with their current behaviour.
You decide to test this out by telling one of the nobles a secret at the start of each event, and seeing how it progresses through the crowd of people.
(It should also be noted that it is of course impossible to tell yourself a secret.)

H1: Ardous Geffenry is told.
H2: Arriev Blanches is told.
H3: Idren Lekal is told.
H4: Arriev Blanches and Crews Geffenry are told.
H5: Salmen Penrod, Shan Blanches and Elyen Venture are told.
H6: Eptres Venture and Shan Blanches are told.
H7: Elyen Venture is told.
H8: Nobody is told.

Ball 3: You start by telling Idren Lekal a secret (that there's a horse in aisle five).
H1: Arriev Blanches is told.
H2: Shan Blanches and Idren Lekal are told.
H3: Crews Geffenry and Eptres Venture are told.
H4: Ardous Geffenry is told. (Elyen Venture is also told, but he is unable to tell two people the secret on his next turn, so he becomes confused and remains silent. Fortuunately, they both already know the secret.)
H5: Ferson Penrod and Salmen Penrod are told.
H6: Tyden Lekal is told.
H7: Everyone is told.

You also know the titles of each of the people that gives a hint to how they behave:
 - Announcer*
 - 5-Hour Delayed Central Blackmailer**
 - Loyal To The Family
 - Librarian
 - Missionary Librarian***
 - Mr ICE
 - Personal Informer
 - Repayer In Kind
 - Reverse Librarian
 - Tight-Lipped

Finally, you tell Shan Blanches the final secret, and read diagonally from the order in which people learn it.

FOOTNOTES:
*With only one exception.
**Another singular exception.
***While one can interpret a missionary as one who brings information to specific people who would not know otherwise (typically a religion), here we have used it in the sense of informing a larger entirely uninformed institution - a country, perhaps, or a house.

Good luck to all teams.

Leaderboard

Spoiler
  1. Team 5 (145 points)
  2. Team Voidapple (120 points)
  3. Bridge 4 (90 points)
  4. Team Shash Gesheh (30 points)
  5. Team 2/SNIRS (30 points)

Congratulations to Bridge 4, who solved Gossipers.

A clarification on Inscriptions: adjectives don’t count; neither do titles, colloquialisms or descriptions. They have to be specifically referring to the word in particular, and not a possible alternate definition. This should have been made clearer.

Also, I apparently can’t read, so the symbols for the final segment will be updated shortly. Apologies.

EDIT: Congratulations to Team 5 and Voidapple, who completed two puzzles almost simultaneously! They solved Gossipers and Astronomy respectively.

Any estimates for when the next game will start? I'd love to sign up.

(And I love the xckd references!)

One person got the reference. I am fulfilled.

I’d give it two weeks after this round ends - maybe more. By the beginning of March, or just after.

I will, however, add you to the spec doc when I get around to making it.

Oh, and add counting to the ‘list of things that Meta can’t do’. I am updating the numbering for Puzzle #1: Day 1. Very sorry.

Congratulations to Team 5, who solved Inscriptions.

EDIT: And to Team 5 again, who solved Travelling Blues! The second wave is now eligible to go up - however, due to an issues with one of the puzzles, it will not be going up immediately. Apologies.

EDIT 2: And to Team 4, who also solved Travelling Blues.

Beware the infamous triple post!

Ahem.

The second wave will be going live shortly. However, due to the fact that I have been unable the puzzle that broke just before the first wave, it will have only three puzzles in it for now. I shall see if I can get a replacement to work in a short amount of time. It won't be anything compared to what I had in there originally, but it will be something.

The new puzzles will be edited into the original post, so keep an eye out for that.

EDIT: The puzzles are now live.

You did indeed. I will add you to your team shortly.

EDIT: I’m a little bit behind on updating on all the puzzle solves, but all teams have now solved puzzles! Well done, everyone!

EDIT 2: And Team Voidapple pulls ahead with a solve of Relativity!

EDIT 3: The final puzzle, Family Trees, is now live. It’s not much compared to what was originally in for that slot, but it’s better than nothing. Happy solving, everyone.

EDIT 4: Family Trees was solved by Team 5, putting them in first place.

EDIT 5: A second solve on Family Trees puts Team Voidapple into second place!

I’m thinking we’ll get the first meta solve today, if teams continue their rate of progress. It’s neck and neck between the three teams right now, which should lead to a tight race this afternoon/evening.

The ordering of the clues for Wayneisms has been updated - the third and fourth pairs have been swapped.

EDIT: And congratulations to Team 5, who got the first solve of Makes The Man!

EDIT 2: And to Team Voidapple, who solves Wayneisms! Every puzzle has now been solved by at least one team. It’s a race to the meta, everyone.

EDIT 3: Team 5 just solved the meta, with only Wayneisms between them and a full score. It’s going to be soon, everyone.

I am now officially closing all answer submissions - the Leaderboard, as it stands now, is the final placement of all teams.

Wrapup may take a few days to go up, since this round was much more complex than the last and I have a lot more to discuss. In the interim, however, I would like to ask an open question to all players:

1) What puzzles did you enjoy? What puzzles didn’t you enjoy? (Rankings would be helpful here.)

2) What sort of things did you expect to see that didn’t happen? Anything new you want to happen in the next round?

3) What did you think of the difficulty of the puzzles in this round?

If everyone answers, then I have a good understanding of what to write going into the next round.
