  1. Just to confirm - thanks to this novella we can safely say that Spook is the one who is viewed as the savior of the Southern Scadrians? That Spook used hemalurgy, at the behest of Kelsier, to prolong his own life and to help search for a "new string" for Kelsier?
  2. Note: I haven't been very active within the 17th shard, and don't know if this idea has been brought up before. Also, this will jump back and forth between several Cosmere works, but will mainly focus on Warbreaker. Now to begin... I was recently rereading Warbreaker when I noticed something interesting. Specifically on page 129 when Llarimar is talking to Lightsong about why he would have returned As to how this origin is specifically is important, in Mistborn: Secret History We also get to see the Cognitive Realm from Jasnah and Shallan's point of views in the Stormlight Archives, essentially a world filled with an ocean of spheres. With the way the Cognitive Realm is shown on these shardworlds, it can be seen that the Cognitive Realm mirrors the Physical Realm and is where people go after dying, but only temporarily in most cases. As to how the amount of time someone remains within the Cognitive Realm affects the origin of the Returned, we know that after a few moments, minutes tops, the soul, or Cognitive Shadow, moves on to the Spiritual Realm. Within Warbreaker, when Llarimar reveals Ligtsong's former life, he mentions that they found him dead, and then he Returned. This means that Lightsong had been dead for a relatively long amount of time, as he had died at sea and they had had to recover his body. Most likely within this circumstance, Lightsong had moved on to the Spiritual Realm, and then Returned. Another reason to support Lightsong's journey to the Spiritual Realm, is the perception of time. As shown in both shardworlds, time moves parallel between the cognitive and physical realms. This means that the future couldn't be seen in either of these. With this knowledge of the realms, anything that does not play into the present status of the Cosmere, must occur within the Spiritual Realm. This is supported within the Emperor's Soul as the magic system, forging, works by changing the past of the person or object being affected, and has also been mentioned as pertaining to the Spirtiual Realm. With this idea in mind, the quote from earlier mentions the future, which is not the present, and therefore would likely occur within the Spiritual Realm. I must now humbly admit that this is a theory, and is simply based upon what was seemingly a revelation to me as I was reading. However, I do ask that you take this seriously, and take whatever thoughts it inspires to new heights, and maybe even offer more evidence to support this theory, or tweak it slightly to make it fit better within the cosmere.
  3. Hey guys (this is my first post), So when I first read Secret History, I noticed that those who are Cosmere-versed, being Nahz, Khriss, Hoid, the Elantrians, etc., call the bodies of the shards Preservation and Ruin Vessels. If you need validation, read the section where Kelsier infiltrates the Elantrians' base. Anyway. Siri is called by the priests on Nalthis as Vessel as well. While this seems just like a derogatory term, I think it could mean a lot more. I believe that Siri will ascend and take the shard Endowment. It sounds crazy and has very little concrete proof but I thought I'd post this and see if you guys had any thoughts. My theory is as follows: We know very little about how the God Kings have been produced in the past. We know that they are babies who have been still born and have Returned. Or at least that is what we are lead to believe. We also know that the priests know a lot of things that they don't tell the Returned. I believe that Siri will either die or be severely injured in childbirth. This will also result in the death of her and Susebron's child. We have no idea how Returned can have children, as it is thought impossible during Siri's time, but it is because the Idrian royal family have Returned blood (Royal Locks). The fact that the child is half Returned will allow the baby to Return a lot easier, basically because it's already half way there. We also know that there can be only one God King at a time. So upon Siri's death Susebron will try to heal her using his one divine breath. This causes his death, like the previous God King's before. And since his breath is so powerful, it basically causes a chain reaction throughout the vicinity, healing and reviving those in need. The plagues and disasters that were "prevented" due to the previous God Kings' deaths were coincidences or fabrications set up by the priests of Hallendren. This should not be surprising as they seem to have their own agenda, as seen in Warbreaker. This leaves Siri to care for their child alone. Like Susebron's mother, she will care for the child until it is of an appropriate age to start ruling. Once this happens, Siri will disappear mysteriously, just like Susebron's mother. This will probably happen because the priests take her away. My guess is that she will be sacrificed to Endowment and the priests will increase he Connection to the shard. How? I don't know. Siri, still holding Susebron's divine breath, because without it she would have died, will give up the breath to her child, die and meet Endowment. Upon dying, she will meet Endowment in the Cognitive Realm much like Kelsier meets Preservation. However, due to her increases Connection with Endowment, the shard will end up giving the power to Siri. While it may be unclear as to why the priests of Hallendren would want the body (or Vessel) of Endowment to change, remember that the shard's intent influences the holder quite a bit. The longer they hold it the more the intent has control over them. For example, in Secret History, Preservation points out that Ati could control Ruin's intent a lot more in the early days, and has essentially been consumed by it. If the wielder of Endowment were to be consumed by the shard's intent, it may just give the power to everyone on the planet, essentially shattering the shard. The priests know this is a bad thing to happen (Elantris basically has no shards cause they were shattered and they aren't exactly so well off). They try to replace the shard as frequently as possible without being suspicious. I know I made a lot (and I mean A LOT) of assumptions. But I think it has some basis. Maybe this won't happen exactly in this manner but I think the main point--that Siri will ascend and take Endowments power--will happen. I have yet to ask Brandon about his use of the word Vessel. Next time I see him I definitely will. Any thoughts? Is it complete crap? Or do you think it has some justification?
  4. In a few short hours, the sixth Mistborn novel, The Bands of Mourning, will be available for everyone to read. Our Bands forum will allow full spoilers for the book tonight. Get excited. You can read our review of Bands here. Below we'll discuss about our spoiler policies for this novel. But, there's something more. As we all know, there is always another secret, and with Brandon, that secret is, of course, a secret project. It is also coming out tonight on ebook formats alongside Bands. It's called Mistborn: Secret History, which Brandon revealed on Reddit after Amazon leaked its existence. Secret History is an ebook novella (and you can find it on Amazon yourself) and it will be on all ebook platforms tonight. It is not coming out February as the Amazon listing suggests. (It will be on iBooks tonight, but when that entry appears, you'll be able to buy it immediately. No preordering there, apparently.) This novella is especially long, at 50,000 words. Just so you know, that's half the length of Shadows of Self, or one-fourth of the first Mistborn book. That's pretty big. Secret History will eventually have a print edition in a cosmere novella anthology, which Brandon hopes will be out this fall. That anthology will have an audio version. There will probably be a standalone print copy of Secret History, in the vein of the Shadows for Silence book, but not until that anthology has been out for "a few years," says Brandon. What is Secret History about? I'll just let Brandon say, as he said on Reddit: I'm going to say this a bit more forcefully than Brandon, but: do not read Mistborn: Secret History until you have read Bands. The preface of Secret History will make this clear...If you're curious about the background of Secret History, this was initially to be a total secret and for it to come out at the same time as Bands, but Amazon did leak its page. It's a thing that exists, but we aren't going to tell you what it is. If you want a mini review, here's one: it is a totally insane, extremely special thing that you should read immediately (after Bands) if you love Mistborn. Forum Spoiler Policies At 12:01am tonight, Mountain Time, our Bands of Mourning spoiler board will open up for full book discussion. Why this time zone? Because the midnight release is in Provo, Utah, and it seemed the most sensible time to "start" the book. You'll know when this happens because you'll see a topic called "Bands of Mourning Book Reactions [bands Spoilers]" pinned at the top, and you'll be able to add posts there. At the same time, there will be another subforum, the Mistborn: Secret History board, that will be open and you will be able to discuss that there--though we will judge you if you go here before finishing Bands. Here's how spoilers are going to go. We need to be especially strict this time around. -You must discuss Bands and Secret History in their respective subforums. Do not even use the usual spoiler tags to discuss these books in any other place on the forum. -Topic titles should not have spoilers (be as vague as possible!) and should either contain the text "[bands Spoilers]" or "[secret History Spoilers]". The reason for this is that, though these topics will be in the Bands or Secret History subforums, they appear in the Recent Topics ticker on the forum home as well as the site home page. Topic titles also appear in the View New Content ability. So, because of this, you will need to be vague about this. Having these tags should make it clear to people who pass across the titles that they should not click those links. -If there happens to be overlap between Bands and Secret History and you want to discuss both, use the Secret History board. We will be using these guidelines in ultra-strict mode for the first two weeks of release. We're super serious about this, and if you break this or spoil stuff because you made an extremely poor choice in a topic title, we'll probably put you in a moderation queue, or worse. A moderation queue is a thing where, if we put you there, we will need to manually check all your posts before they will appear to the populace. If spoilers are really bad, it might be grounds to a ban. Let's just keep these guidelines in mind and I'm sure it will go fine! After February 9th--two weeks after Bands and Secret History are public--we will be exiting ultra-strict spoiler police mode and reverting to our usual policy. You will be able to mention Bands or Secret History spoilers outside of their respective subboards only with use of the spoiler tags. If your entire topic is a spoiler, you must still put them in the subboards. You should also keep using the [bands Spoilers] or [secret History Spoilers]. It will be about six months after release when the subforums disappear (as we did with Words of Radiance) and we exit the main spoiler period. To be clear on spoiler tags, the easiest way is to simply type this: [spoiler](Write spoilers here)[/spoiler] I also want to talk about Cosmere Theories. In the past, we have been lax regarding spoiler topics in the Cosmere Theories board and allowing people to have spoiler heavy book discussion (of a primarily cosmere nature) there right at release. We're going to be more strict now, and so the "ultra-strict" mode still applies in Cosmere Theories. Post the relevant topics in the subboards. On February 9th, you can post spoilery cosmere topics in the Cosmere Theories board, so long as you still adhere to the topic titling guidelines. If you would like, we can move cosmere-heavy topics in the Bands or Secret History subforum to Cosmere Theories on February 9th. I hope you are as excited for Bands and Secret History as we are. (You should be.) We hope with these guidelines, if you haven't read these first thing, you can still use the forum effectively. Enjoy, everyone. One final note: Splintercast Reads Shadows of Self will return on Wednesday, rather than its usual Tuesday, because tomorrow, you probably should go read some new Brandon Sanderson-y goodness. But don't worry, Alyx will return soon. She is also going to have Splintercasts for Bands and Secret History, so there will be plenty of screaming to hear for you. I hear some of her reactions on Bands have been particularly awesome...
  5. So, maybe I'm making a connection that doesn't exist...but follow me on this. When Hoid shows up at the well of ascension and accosts Kelsier...he's riding a corpse like a boat...and that corpse is not all the way dead (it mumbles something when Hoid prods it) BoM Maybe I'm reading too much into these things, but is it possible that some yet unseen shard world's magic system somehow involves the manipulation of the dead?
  6. Today I was re-reading Secret History and I noticed something I missed at my first reading: This part made me think in another way about Ire's glowing drink. Of course they are Elantrian and they need the Dor to keep their abilities. This is why at a first reading, the first think that came to my mind was about "they drink liquid Dor to sustain themself". But this sentence shows a strong likeleness from the Ire's Drink and the Connection's Orb. Or at least Kelsier saw a connection (i know bad joke) between the two liquid with only a difference about quality. He may not be an expert but in his Cognitive Shadow form, He shows some intuitive understanding of the Cosmere's Mechanics. Therefore I began to think: It's possible the Ire's drink isn't Dor or raw Investiture but instead it's "just" Connection to their homeland (Sel or more specific Elantris) and they use it to enhance their connection to the Dor and recive it so far in the Cosmere. Has this idea some merit or it's just a baseless speculation ?
  7. Sanderson has said that anyone can take up a Shard. However, it was necessary for Kelsier and the Ire to have the Connection device (the "thingy" in the title) in order to take up Preservation. So, the question is: why? I think it may have had something to do with the fact that Kelsier had no physical Aspect.
  8. Hey people! my first post here. Okay coming to the point, I finished white sand and I love both khriss and kenton, and since I wanted to know more about khriss, I read secret history again. and here there is this dialogue. Khriss is in exile. Exile from? was she exiled from the dark side for some thing she did and hence started working for 17 th shard? Or is she in exile from 17 th shard? If so, what could be the reason she is in exile from17th shard or from the dark side? Also I have a question. Are there more books coming about white sand? Or is the white sand going to end this way? With kenton going to dark side to catch up with khriss. I know there is a trilogy of graphic books coming, but I guess the trilogy is based entirely on this draft we got. So the big question, is there going to be more to white sand than the draft we received? I hope to god there is more. I loved white sand, more than elantris or war breaker or newer mistborn novels. I loved both kenton and khriss. Please tell me ther are more books going to come Also what do you guys think is going to happen with kenton? Do you think is he going to become a world hopper too? Considering that even baon became world hopper, do you guys think we can have three world hoppers from a single planet? Or do you guys think, kenton and khriss are going to be seperated ( i hope this doesn't happen)?
  9. So I finished Secret History and Bands of Mourning recently and I got a super creepy vibe from post-death Kelsier. Despite the fact that he helped the Southern Scadrians, I got the sense that he may be up to no good, with some seriously inscrutiable ulterior motives. In my opinion, he had kind of a negative influence on Spook, since he encouraged Spook to help him experiment with Hemalurgy and Spook later wrote that it might be a good idea to get old or disabled Metalborn to sacrifice themselves to give their power to others. I thought that was pretty creepy for Kell. Plus, the Set has been experimenting with Hemalurgy and they had to learn it somewhere. I dunno, maybe Kell is being influenced by Trell and his "coming back to the Physical Realm" hack has to do with Trellish unknown metals? Something less than savory is going on, and it has me worried. What do you think?
  10. Just a heads up for all of you who have yet to read it, this deals with secret history content. So while Kelsier was discussing how preservation could be killed by ruin with Khriss and Nazh, Khriss expresses surprise that ruin does not simply splinter preservation. She wonders if ruin does not know how to splinter a shard, or if instead he simply lacks the power to. Instead, ruin appears to slowly strangle preservation, eventually killing Leras. We also know that ruin was quite anxious to gain access to the hoard of atium kept by the kandra, since this was the final piece of its power. So, to put it simply, does this mean that ruin would have used the splintering technique that we have seen odium use if it had managed to gain access to the atium?
  11. Ok so I literally just finished Secret History, I had this crazy idea, and a quick forum search didn't bring anything up about this, so here goes. Through out SH, the place after death is referred to as the Beyond. Khriss says that Adonalsium was killed. When people die, they go to the Beyond. Adonalsium was a god, who has now gone to the Beyond. One could even say that he's a God Beyond. Drops mic. Walks out. Other than the logical consistency of this idea, the only other piece of evidence I have for it is that the Beyond is spelled with a capital B. Even if I'm wrong and the God Beyond isn't Adonalsium, the fact the Beyond is capitalized, means that the Beyond is a real thing, and by extension, the God Beyond. Also if this has been brought up before, I'm sorry. I have failed all of you.
  12. There is a recent WoB calling a question asking whether the Elantrians in Ire are from before theReod a good one. Well, I think those people may be even older than the splintering of the Sel shards: Elrao said: "Devotion protect us", which shows that he must have once worshiped her as a God. OTOH, the new Elantrians don't even know about Devotion. They were called the "ancient ones". Their life supporting mechanism was different from Galladon's, and the magic systems before the splintering was different from those after.
  13. So, does anyone have any thoughts about how/why Kelsier visibly appears when Spook makes the decision "against his better judgment" to put the hemalurgical earring in his ear? This seems like it could be proof that Kelsier holds some portion of Ruin. However, it could just as easily be that Kelsier's greater Connection to Ruin and/or Spook enables him to use certain Ruinous abilities (like being in the Cognitive Realm and talking to people in the Physical Realm who have spikes and/or broken minds). I put forth that this strange occurrence is a function of Kelsier's strong Connection to Spook as well as his disproportionately larger connection to Ruin (compared to his connection with Preservation). Kel was able to influence Spook because of Spook's broken mind and the addition of the earring allowed Kel to appear to Spook and communicate with him fully. The only thing this doesn't answer is how the earring affects Spook's connection to Harmony. Thoughts? Other Questions to Consider: [1] Shouldn't using a hemalurgical earring connect Spook to Sazed? [2] Shouldn't the earring experience be audio-only (like Wax's conversations with Harmony in Era 2)? [3] Does Kel's visibility have to do with the physical proximity of Kelsier's Cognitive Shadow to Spook in the Cognitive Realm? [4] If #3 is "yes", does this mean that Spook's earring would allow him to see a nearby Shade visiting from Threnody? Why or why not? [5] What influences Connection? How is it increased or decreased? Are there different rules governing how it affects people vs. places? Full Disclosure: I really loathe the 'Kelsier holds Harmony's excess Ruin' theories, so I'm hoping someone has a way to explain this event that doesn't involve that. It helps me to note that even though we see a good amount of interaction between Sazed and Kelsier in MSH, we DO NOT see Sazed bestowing Kelsier with any powers or portions of his shards. If anything, we see Sazed withholding information from Kelsier that would enable him to affect the Cosmere in a more meaningful way.
  14. I am going to quote the wiki on Ym's religious belief: (http://coppermind.net/wiki/Ym) Religious Belief He believes, long ago, there was only one being which he simply calls One. One knew everything but had experienced nothing. And so One became Many in order to experience all things. As each experience is different, it brings completeness to One. Eventually, all will be gathered back in when the sum of land is attained and they will once again become One. Every person is a different mind of a single being experiencing different lives. As Many, they need ignorance. Each fragment of the One’s mind has its own body with different passions and inclinations. They exist in variety to experience all kinds of thought. That means some people must know and others must not. Just like some people must be rich and others poor. This is why he is interested in collecting other people's experiences. In light of Khriss's words on who Shattered Adonalsium, I think, this needs a revisit. When I first read the Ym Interlude I felt that this was *way too close* to the truth to ignore it. There is a mystery of how such a belief - easily describing a version of the Shattering - could have reached Ym. But now, after Khriss's revelation, I want to go back to this and ask a question: what if this is indeed a version of a description of the Shattering? If it is the case (and I think it is the case), then, the second line there: "One knew everything but experienced nothing" appears to be crucially important. Beyond Khriss's description of the motivations of the 16, this is the only possible evidence of what that motivation might have been. Or, alternatively, the post-Shattering hagiography and apologia. The other important thing to notice is that this belief presents us with two opposite notions: knowledge and experience. * Adonalsium: omniscent, but not omnipresent * Shards after the Shattering: omnipresent (collectively) but not omniscent. It also explains why (some) Shards further splinter themselves! (think Endowment - this religion described what she is doing on a daily basis). If there is a master list of questions for Brandon, how about this one: "What would Hoid think about Ym's religion?" Thoughts? (PS. This is, incidentally, why, of all single-Interlude characters thus far I liked Ym over Lift).
  15. Between the general worry of those extremely old (or perhaps extremely new?) Elantrians and the second (as far as I know) on-screen appearance of Nazh, I feel like Threnody HAS gone ahead and officially joined the Main Stage of the Cosmere, despite the opinion of Alonoe (BTW, could you HAVE a more Aonic name, sule?). This is interesting for a lot of reasons to me, but the timeline is of particular interest, as we see that Nazh is certainly alive at the same time as the Shades. This would seem to me to indicate that Nazh is quite old at, probably from the Homeland days of Threnody. We know that Shadows for Silence only took place a couple of generations removed from the settling of the Forests, but it seems that there are enough Threnodite cognitive shadows that the Ire keeps forces patrolling the border, and carry a specific anti-Threnodite device with them on their trip. We also know that Nazh was around during the Shaod period of Elantris, which was set a long time before the events of The Final Empire. Does this seem correct to everyone else? And is everyone else as excited to see more Threnodites as I?
  16. It seemed to me that the Ire in the fortress used a fabrial of the same type as the merchant used in Shinovar, in order to determine if anyone was nearby. I find this interesting! As far as we know, this is supposed to take place before the events of Stormlight Archive, which means that this type of fabrial was not as recent invention, when we see it in WoK. This is not something I expected, I thought it seemed like kind of a new thing on Roshar. That, or it was invented perviously on Roshar and lost to Rosharans, and later reinvented. What do you think of this logic?
  17. The Ire mentions Fortune, with a capital F. It sounds like a Shard to me. - Location 1389, Kindle Are we absolutely positive that there is no Shard on Threnody? I haven't read Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell because I didn't think it was important in the greater scheme of the Cosmere. I suppose I need to rethink that position now. Also, who is Senna? Whoever she is, she's likely the bearer of a Shard. Preservation mentions her. -Location 823, Kindle Maybe Senna is the holder of Fortune. Maybe she's someone totally different. Why do I assume she's a she?
