I'm thinking Forging would be very interesting as an interplay with hemalurgy. Forging seems to change the spiritual and cognitive aspects as well as the physical ones. So... at best, an essence stamp Forged individual could be spiked, tearing off a part of the changed spiritual aspect, and then the aspect would revert to original, leaving the spiked individual unharmed or mostly unharmed. Brilliant. At worst, you could use essence stamps as a neat little spiking factory - take a semi-plausible stamp with a quality you like, stamp it, quickly spike it in the five minutes or so before it dissipates, get yourself a shiny spike with the spiritual aspect you want without all the rubbish of running around trying to find the perfect victim. Evil Hemalurgic mass production ho!

Regional Magic and Dominion
Tempus replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Everything in KChan's theory that Weiry linked is fantastic, and covers the majority of anything useful I might have had to contribute to this conversation. I really am jonesing for that theory index I proposed when there are such great theories and discussions I haven't seen! -
Measuring the Chronology of the Cosmere by Technology
Tempus replied to Tempus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, they really are. Their medicine is quite standout, and there is a specific reason for this. Spren. Germ theories were available hundreds of years before they were adopted, but it's very difficult to get people to accept things that they can't see. In our world, the microscope was invented in the 17th century, and wasn't able to see germs until late 18th/early 19th century. It was the ability to see the germs and access to those microscopes that led to the widespread adoptation of germ-centric disease theories. On Roshar, infection have spren, diseases have spren, rot has spren. They specifically mention you can see them flee from water. Their medicine is advanced because they can see things we needed microscopes for, simple as that. They can also see direct indications of pain (painspren) and other types, allowing for easier diagnostics. We haven't seen any mention of any formalized scientific method, but there is lots of indication that it is under development or could be founded shortly if there was sufficient lines of communication between scholars. The only person who is seen on screen to put down any methodical experimentation is Sizgil, but as ardents and scholars are generally women, I expect that it is fairly well known and quite possibly on the cusp. There are a number of economic texts from Antiquity, notably China and Greece. Though modern political economic theory was all Adam Smith up in the 18th century, mercantilism and it's origins were established in the middle ages, and Sebarial's knowledge (at least his demonstrated knowledge) isn't beyond that. I'd debate this on three points. The Alethi were until just recently a scattered collection of feudal lords, constantly fighting their small battles (and still doing so, as shown in Way of Kings) for land. There's nothing to suggest that they have anything approaching a large, standing, national force - in fact it is clear from the way the Highprinces act that having an overarching military authority (Highprince of War) is not only unusual, but unwanted. Military cooperation is not exactly on the list, and their invasion is supported entirely by individual greed of a variety of factions (the gemhearts). This has every indication of being similar to a feudal, medieval type organization. Many countries had standing armies. Notably, the Romans had a large standing army, and the Vorin hierocracy of the past resembles in many ways the Roman Empire. Lastly, Alethi is apparently based a little bit on a Korean-Western mashup, according to Brandon. It isn't required to parallel western military practice. I agree, it's all a little wishy washy. I've put Roshar at late medieval here, but some are further (medicine) and some are behind (engineering). The good part is though, that the history of technology on earth has fairly large tolerances as well - the level of tech varies fairly widely from country to country, and from urban to rural as well. The reason I organized the chart into blocks of descending scale was to help visually represent these tolerances - in medieval times, 100-300 years is a fairly good tolerance. In modern times, even very poor countries in Africa have some internet, machinery, factories and other such technologies in their urban centres, and a tolerance closer to 10-50 years is better. It is all a little estimated, but we don't really need to be precise to a few years or to specific parts of society for each tech, a general idea will suffice. -

Hello everyone. We're going to be trying a new, quicker form of elimination game to supplement the main games. These Quick Fix games will run at different times from when the main games begin, and will take less than a week to complete. This will be the inaugural game! So we'll be keeping it nice and simple. Quick Fix games will be shorter in duration - you'll need to be able to post once in any 24 hour period to participate. Day and Night will run simultaneously in that period. There will be fewer special roles, and they will be more straightforward to make certain everyone gets a good grasp of the game. In a Quick Fix, Role playing is less important - you won't be making complex roles like for the main games. A core premise will be provided, and you will be given a character framework to work with. You may or may not choose to expand upon this character by filling in your own details as you go! Feel free to lie about them as well, of course. A full list of the basic ruleset for the Quick Fix games can be found here. Premise: For our first game, the premise will take place on Sel. The players are all gathered at a Duladel trading outpost - it is the end of winter, and late, inclement weather has snowed in the passes. Holing up in the small outpost, you prepare to last out the short winter. One morning, however, you awaken to the sound of horses braying. Confusion reigns briefly, until gathered outside, you witness a grisly scene - the outpost's freeholder has been nailed to the stable wall, his entrails gone, his stomach bloated with red dyed straw. The traces for the horses have been cut, and the stable is empty. The tracks lead off down the snow covered road, but no sign is visible. With no guards and no guarantee to make it to the next village safely in such unexpected conditions, you have no choice but to try to discover the identity of the killer - before they kill again! Day Rollover Time: 4pm GMT, Noon EST, 9am PST Roles: All Players: Must submit one vote via PM to the game master (Tempus), once every during every 24 hour period. These votes will be made public at the end of the period, and the most voted for player will be sent to die in the snow. Follower of the Mysteries: A follower of the Jeskeri Mysteries must send one vote via PM to the game master (Tempus) per 24 hour period in addition to their normal vote. The most voted for player will be sacrificed for their own mysterious purpose. Priest of Jesker: The Priest of Jesker is a learned man, and can identify the sacrifice of the Jeskeri Mysteries. A Priest will know the correct number of Jeskeri Mystery followers at game start, and may investigate one other player per day (by contacting the game master) to learn if they are a follower of the Mysteries or not. We're looking for a minimum of 8 players, and an ideal of 16. If enough players are gathered by the Rollover time this next Monday, the game will begin. If not, the game will begin on the following Friday. Sign up by leaving a comment confirming your attendance below! Quick Links:

Oh, this quote. This one is actually suggesting that Dalinar has a Regrowth enabled honorblade and is using it to Regrow Kaladin's wound. Honorblade wielders do not seem to gain the same sort of benefits of holding stormlight that surgebinders seem to.

[Theory] The Stormfather is Tanavast's Cognitive Shadow
Tempus replied to WeiryWriter's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think the key part about that quote is that something about the Stormfather, Cultivation, and her feelings for Tanavast is a big spoiler, which is interesting to say the least. -
This is big, I didn't notice this, my search terms are not turning it up for some reason. Can you direct me to the section?

Demoux seems unlikely. Demoux survived and got a girlfriend as part of an agreement between Brandon and a close friend, according to the annotations and interviews. I doubt this is the kind of character he would then kill off, substitute for a Kandra, and make a worldhopper.

That's pure evil!

Google Hangout w/ Brian McClellan & Brandon Sanderson
Tempus replied to Argent's topic in Events and Signings
Fair enough. -
The official explanation for Kandra is that there is some sort of twisting or blockage in the connection between the physical and the cognitive, iirc. Spiritual aspects govern connections, so presumably they straighten that out. Koloss I believe are described as working opposite, the spikes distort their connection making them dull.

4 is probably a yes. I had discussion about this with Kurk somewhere else. Anyway, about 50 WoBs and in-world quotes later, it was pretty definitive that any large enough amount of investiture left on its own qualifies as a splinter and will develop sentience. It's not directly confirmed, but it's pretty much deductively proven. -
Terriswoman in Warbreaker. =( Iyatil looks like a great candidate. So obvious I didn't even consider it. The mask means that Iya doesn't even need to have an actual body with bones to use, she can hide any disfiguring Kandra style stuff with clothes and mask. And she does have the strong worldhopping connections.

Kandradate? Well, you'd never get bored. ^_-

Kandra candidate - Gaz He disappears after a bridge run. The chasms are full of skeletons from fallen warriors. He reappears as a deserter to become a trusted and loyal member of Shallan's (an important and rare surgebinder) retinue. With a very different personality. Well, slightly different.

Aimians and Kandra share the shapeshifting ability, but not the reverse shadow ability (Aimians probably shift cognitively, while Kandra shift physically). If we see an Aimian shapeshifter without the reverse shadow, that would be a great indication.

New WoB from the Waygate stream Weiry transcribed: This implies they all knew each other BEFORE gaining the shards, incidentally. Though the way he says it implies they didn't necessarily know each other well, or at least not all of them.

Possible Location of Urithiru and Oathgates?
Tempus replied to wickedpissah's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm still hung up on the mountain issue. We know it is in the mountains, that is one of the actual things we know exactly. It needs to be in that mountain range somewhere. -
In many different shardworlds, investitures increase mental capacity to expand to fit the new abilities. This is super notable in Stormlight (Kaladin's stormlight reactions), but also in Mistborn (see above), Elantris (Raoden mentions how it affects his mental state a couple times), Nalthis (many heightenings include additional instinctive knowledge) and some other stuff.

From that quote, I personally feel Elantris is between one and two thousand years. Why? Normally, if it were 200-999 years, you'd say "hundreds but less than a thousand". In this case, he clearly says 'not thousands of years'. In the USA an many other english speaking countries, it is common to refer to dates between 1000 and 2000 by the term hundreds. 1500 is the fifteen hundreds, not the one thousand five hundreds. This is the way people speak, normally, and with a number like say '1200' in his mind, he would think of it as twelve hundred naturally. Thus his particular phrasing makes slightly more sense. No guarantees, of course. Just my thoughts on the specific way he phrases it. As for the Kandra worldhopper... I did a quick search for rotten, rancid or spoiled meat, just in case it was that simple. • An ardent named Lhan in Words of Radiance distributes rotten meat to the poor. • A Hoed in Elantris is seen shuddering next to a pile of rotten meat • Rock eats weird things • Shallan is talking about metaphors for love with her brothers, and an unnamed brother says "Ha! Love is like spoiled food."

where were the tranquiline halls
Tempus replied to Matrim Bloody Cauthon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Nope, can't do that. This theory has been floating around a lot. The Tranquiline Halls are mentioned in direct connection with Braize, a known planet in the Greater Roshar solar system. The main theories are that the Tranquiline Halls are Ashyn or Yolen. Ashyn, because it is in the same solar system as well. Yolen, because the Tranquiline Halls are described as the origin of humanity or something similar, can't recall the exact phrasing. Other options that have been discussed: TH is Braize (see above). TH is the afterlife that Harmony mentions. TH does not exist and is a myth added by Vorinism. TH is Roshar prior to the Desolations (tranquiline means calm, aka less storms).
