I have to disagree with this. The earring could indicate a different allomantic ability, or even be made from a Blessing that had been removed from the Koloss when Sazed changed them. (Sazed would have done something with all of those unused spikes, given that he could only communicate with people who had been hemalurgically spiked... although whether he made them into earrings or used them to wake new Kandra is up for debate for now) I don't disagree the earring is a Hemalurgic spike, (how else does he hear back from Harmony?) but it's possible that that spike doesn't grant the ability to burn pewter, and it may be possible that Harmony didn't need to fuel Pewter to cause a burst of strength for Wax.
-
Well, given they're dying, they're losing more than bits of their spiritwebs! Brandon's heavily implied that Hemalurgy only works when the victim is killed in his answers to Hemalurgy questions.
-
It's a noun used in a throwaway fashion in the Alloy of Law Ars Arcanum, which presumably refers to some part (or even the whole, perhaps) of a person's spiritual aspect.

I assume you'd fix the Spren in whichever measurement you wrote down first.

You can only tap what you can store with Feruchemy, so how would you get an ability out of it that you didn't put in? Now, you could certainly compound investiture for a very large nicroburst, but that might be as dangerous as it could be useful, assuming that you can scale up a nicroburst at all.
-
We know they can both fuel Allomancy and Feruchemy, with Preservation being stronger at fueling Allomancy, and Ruin being stronger at fueling any abilities granted through spikes. It's reasonable to assume that Ruin could also fuel basic human abilities granted through spikes if he had wanted to, for instance supercharging a Kandra blessing. What we don't know is whether it's possible for Preservation to fuel the basic human attributes he granted to people on Scadrial when they're not spiked, and thus whether Harmony could have simply fueled Wax whether or not he was spiked by something with a useful Hemalurgic charge.

I'd rather expect his motives to be more complicated than simple heroism or villainy. It could be he wants to try and repair Adonalsium as much as possible, for instance, which could be a bad thing from certain points of view.

To the point that it would be "too simple" for Jasnah to be right in her theory in the first book, that's not a very good argument for two reasons. First, there's also the possibility that Jasnah's right about Parshmen being Voidbringers, but that she doesn't really understand what the Voidbringers are, and that it's more complicated than she thinks. Secondly, there's the possibility that Jasnah's simply right, but other people won't believe her, and that there are other large conflicts in the plot, with the impending rise of the voidbringers being more of a secondary plot point, or a sort of pressure valve for SA#2.

Is it possible for a Shard to fuel the human attributes that Kandra spike themselves with the same way they can fuel allomancy? If so, harmony could essentially have given him the "blessing of might" power by enhancing his human strength for a short time.

Theory: Space Travel Between Shardworlds
Ari replied to Deus Ex Biotica's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We know that Alloy of Law is set before Way of Kings, but I doubt they will have reached space travel by the time of Way of Kings, as Brandon has mentioned that technological development in many ways has slowed due to the nature of society on Scadrial at the moment, and the fact that they can substitute Allomancy for a lot of technology. I suspect the second Mistborn trilogy would be set either roughly at the same time as or later than the Way of Kings. -
I'm liking this theory so far, it definitely seems that strongly displaying the attributes and showing commitment to them attracts and strengthens a bond with a specific type of Spren.
-
It's likely Hoid found a way to become immortal as part of Dragonsteel's plot, as Brandon strongly hinted that immortality is a prerequisite to the way he travels between worlds.
-
Interesting, for sure. I've wondered if the intensity of the highstorms might also have had something to do with Honour's death.
-
It's also quite possible that Honour is the only one with exactly 10 magic systems under the 30 count, and that some belong to Cultivation or Odium, but others result as an interaction between Odium and Honour or Cultivation and Odium or whatever.

Theory: Honor's Shard Shattered Like Adonalsium
Ari replied to FeatherWriter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
While I suspect you're on the right track here, Kelsier somehow took charge of at least some of Preservation's power from beyond the grave before Vin burned out her body calling on the mists, so Preservation was held in some sense during the entire trilogy. It's entirely possible that a dead Knight Radiant already holds Honour or what's left of it in the same way that Kelsier held Preservation. -
The tears of edgli are comparable with the metals in that they're what "unlocks" the power of their respective system, but the power comes from Endowment (breaths) or preservation (lerasium) in the first place.

Minor quibble: A name simply is what something is called. A nickname might be less formal and official, but it is still a name. A proper name is a name that is intended to signify only a single thing- for instance, Berlin is the proper name of only a single city, and ironically, although there are thousands of John Smiths, each one is a proper name when used in the context of that single person, too. In terms of grammar and language, the capital on Honourblades and Dawnshards is only appropriate if they're proper names, but it's quite clear that these terms are being used as regular nouns. Brandon is just using the capitals as a way to signal that these terms are in-universe jargon, which is an established fantasy convention. There's really nothing to say that two terms of jargon can't overlap in meaning: For instance, all Honourblades might be Dawnshards, but there might also be Dawnshards that aren't Honourblades, and if you want to argue that Honourblades aren't Dawnshards, I think a better reason than "they both have capital letters" would be useful, especially as I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm not so sure your second point is really proof of anything- the Dawnshards are always referred to in the plural iirc, so they might have to work collectively. If Honourblades really are dawnshards, then you might need all the honourblades together for them to function as dawnshards, for instance.

And once again I'm really annoyed we don't get that diagram in the World English version. Bloody Orbit.

Hemalurgy stealing Feruchemical abilities *Spoilers*
Ari replied to TheChronicFeruchemist's topic in Mistborn
I was re-reading HoA and the answer to what decays (and thus presumably what would be enhanced if you spiked a feruchemist or ferring with a power they already have) is in the chapter bumps: It's storage speed. You cannot store a quality as fast when granted a feruchemical ability via a spike. Here's the quote: Ch. 36 heading, (pg. 249, first edition US hardcover) emphasis mine. So, we know for sure that you at least get increased storage speed, and it's reasonable to assume you're also able to access the appropriate metalminds from the feruchemist that was spiked, although we don't have confirmation of that. This makes a reasonable amount of sense, as before compounding was available through the mixture of Allomancy and Feruchemy, the speed with which abilities was stored regulated both how often Feruchemists could use an ability, and how strongly they could tap it. -
You're absolutely right that Ruin COULD fill TLR's atiumminds, similar to the way he can also fuel Allomancy, but there's no way in hell he would. Although that does bring to mind an interesting side-observation: Is it Ruin's ability to fuel metalic arts that allows him to alter copperminds? Is he essentially "filling" a coppermind with a false memory that overwrites one already in the coppermind?
-
I think he just refers to them as Shards, because after a certain point, the "holder" of the shard ceases to matter. I like double- (etc...) tapping, but if people use flood or surge, I'd like to suggest it in the form of "she flooded with Strength" or "she surged speed", rather than referring to the metalminds, or if you do refer to the metalminds, say "from her metalmind". The grammar people have been using in this thread looks very weird to me.
-
Another thought: 10 is an "arc number", to borrow TV tropes terminology, for the SA. Is it a coincidence that there are also ten shard worlds? Yeah, I doubt Brandon will answer questions about why the shards chose the worlds they did, so we should look for similarities in our rereads and as new books are released. We can't really talk about why Sel's shards were drawn to Sel or how they relate to each other given that we only know one of their names.
-
Ah. I don't know about that, it would certainly give him a huge motivation to re-stitch Adonalsium together as much as possible, and thus a great motivation for what he's doing, but we don't really know enough about Hoid to really support it with anything.

Absence of non-theist religions in Brandon´s writing
Ari replied to HiccupGreyjoy's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Both are interested in a god, although yes, in those cases the god may not necessarily be Sazed.
