Aaand he's the villain of the second five books
-
You say something is a cliche, but can't give examples of the same plot in other works? It was a predictable plot, though. May be you missed a word or two in the paragraph before the last one and I'm not sure what you meant there. You were bashing Shadolin as if that supports Shalladin, which isn't true and also isn't a nice thing to do. May be you didn't mean it so harsh. Anyway, you are entitled to ship any couple you want, but please be more thoughtful of how you express yourself. We're all fans here I suggest we move on to something more productive and on topic. Why do you (I mean everyone) think Shallan and Adolin will break up? He's quite smitten by her, I can't imagine him ending the relationship. Unless Balat sets on fire some of his clothes.

The idea of spren originated from Korean (and not only) beliefs everything has a soul or a spirit. Tengrinism was a Central Asian religion, so there are bound to be similarities imo. Brandon said he has influences from all over the place, so he had probably stumbled upon Tengrinism while researching variety of Asian mythologies. Yel Ata is a Turkic god of wind, whose name translates into 'Fire Wind'. I'm not saying it's definitely that way, but I thought the similarities are worth mentioning and It works well for Blightwind.

Tengrinism has some core believes that appear in SA (Tengri being the supreme God): So here's the what I have on Yelig-nar also known as Blightwind: Yer-sub are Tangrinism nature spirits that Yel means wind in Turkish Nar means fire in Maltese Yel Ata is a Turkic god of wind, whose name translates into 'Fire Wind' edit: adding the last one

Of course not everything is a cliche, you are exaggerating now. Like Kogiopsis asked, how come you consider Navani and Dalinar one? I can't think of a movie or a book where a widowed middle-aged woman seduces her dead husband's brother. Anyway, people are entitled to (dis)like a ship for whatever reason. Arguing against Shadolin (and any other ship) isn't helping support Shaladin. It's true that as far as textual evidence goes, those are the two likeliest pairings, but not just one of them, so your ship isn't the only one textually supported. What is more, a ship doesn't necessarily have to be based on any textual evidence at all, only to appeal to the shipper. Even after a ship becomes canon, anyone can still ship a different pairing just because they like it. It's ok to ship any couple you want, and for me it's fun to read the reasons behind each ship. Shipping isn't an argument to be won, nor is there a right ship that automatically cancels all others.

The first that comes to my mind is 'It's a boy girl thing'. It's about two teenage neighbors, who go to the same school and basically hate each other. He's an athlete, she's a nerd. They get in a verbal fight infornt of an ancient statue and the next morning they've switched bodies. Then they have more sassy verbal fights. After going a few days in the other's shoes, they begin to understand one another better, find similarities and the curse wears off when they are finally able to get along. They have a romance after, because they've developed feelings for each other during the extraordinary experience. Putting characters (who originally couldn't stand each other) thorough something unusual and forcing them to cooperate in order to go back with their lives, only to have them fall inlove in the end is far from being unheard of, if not a cliche scenario.

He didn't explicitly say who he meant, so even though that's the likeliest guess, I said 'might' just to be safe. I wasn't really serious about that ship, just sounded like a fun one. I doubt Hoid will have a romantic relationship during SA, may be in other books. IIRC, he's supposed to be a major character in the third Mistborn series, so may be then, but we'll see.
-
I suppose it depends on one's perception. I know Hoid is millenniums* old, but I don't think of him as some sort of a grandpa. Shipping Lift and Kal, that sounds wrong and weird (at least until she's old enough), but Shalloid (Hollan?) is absolutely fine by me. After all only Cultivation is around his age and they don't get along, so he'll have to go for someone much younger anyway. edit: * come to think of it, he might not be that old if he can time travel

The perception of the king's word being the law is right on spot since most countries on Roshar are monarchies. We see it fairly clear in Alethkar. and so Kaladin was send to prison for a crime that should have earned him an execution. I highly doubt there are many (if any) courts on Roshar that denounce laws. We've seen none so far. Moogle already answered about Ym and here's Lift's case So it wasn't just for theft and it was a legal punishment. Though I agree it wasn't right, it was lawful nonetheless. edit: spelling

Kaladin was highborn in the ARC?! Honestly, I could have never guessed.

The involuntary nature of Renarin's visions
Aleksiel replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Renarin probably didn't have a spren that far back. I think he bonded Glys during WoR, just before his vision healed. I've assumed Ren's visions weren't directly linked to his surges, more a passive non-stormlight consuming ability like Shallan's Memory. It's reasonable to think he'll learn to control them over time or at least to control his own reactions during one. -
Kadolin I shall duel anyone who stands between their bromance!

I imagine a Skybreaker will follow the law in the country s/he is in. There are rules in every country that say who makes the law and changes it, I don't see a reason for a philosophical debate here. Also, I can't say Nalan has been twisting the law. Lift did trespass and steal, Ym was involved in a murder. The murder being 40 years ago is irrelevant if the law doesn't declare the crime no longer prosecuted after a certain amount of years. Lift's violation was punishable by death and he got the proper forms for it. You can argue Lift being a poor child is a mitigating circumstance, however a death sentence was the legal punishment for trespassing the palace and interrupting the holy conclave in a session. My issue is Nalan blended being a prosecutor, judge and executor, but it can be viewed as saving government spendings that way. Bad joke aside, I doubt most countries on Roshar have separation of powers and Nalan has probably done his research properly and knows what's within his legal powers.

The idea is that above a certain IQ Mr T's intelligence compensates for the lack of empathy and he is able to correctly predict human behavior. Why do you consider Vargo a control freak with pride issues? How is he hungry for power and self-absorbed?

Thank you!

Why (I think) that Kaladin is a better hero than Dalinar
Aleksiel replied to Patrick Star's topic in Stormlight Archive
But wouldn't Odium give powers to his champion? And if he does (which I'm inclined to believe so), then Kal losing his surgebinding powers will have no impact. -
Both are amazing, I didn't mean to discourage you in any way and I hope I didn't! I just have a strong mental image of Shallan (unlike other characters) and in the first few seconds my mind wandered toward Alyssa Sutherland (I recently watched Vikings, so that might be part of the reason), who's absolutely gorgeous by the way, so please take it as the compliment it was intended to be. I'm looking forward to your next Stormlight Archive drawings and I hope you'll share them here.

I saw this in coppermind, but it doesn't seem to have a reference. Can you link a source? I want to read what I've missed.

Of course it's my interpretation. Your opinion is also an interpretation. We look at the same facts and make two different predictions. You see Shallan's description of Kal and him comparing her to Tien as favorable to Shalladin, but I (and others) interpret the same textual evidence in a different direction. Both are interpretations and neither is canon. Note that Kal hasn't compared anyone else to Tien, so it's unreasonable to claim he'll compare all girls who make him laugh to Tien. Yes, we haven't seen him laugh with another girl yet. But it's a stretch to conclude everyone who cheer him up will remind him of Tien. Bridge Four certainly didn't and Kal was trying to save them as much as he tried with Tien, they also were able to take away some of his gloom just by being there, yet he never made a comparison to his brother. I'm in the Kal/Shall sibling relationship camp. That would be awesome. I'd love to see Shallan with someone who can share her adventures Did anyone say Hoid? But Shallan will be great on her own, I don't think she'll end up with any of the current male characters. For now, I prefer to see her character developing without a romantic relationship, so I've voted Noone in case anyone's wondering.
-
Still better than Kal's description. The whole combination of passion, quips and being unchangeable by nothing and noone vibe (that Shallan gets from him) doesn't sound like a good relationship material. More like a future of intense verbal fights followed by physical ways to reconcile (doesn't sound like the right word, but I can't think of a better one, hopefully you get my point anyway). Now, this isn't necessarily the future of their relationship, but despite what many people like you say, the only relationship between Kal and Shallan that I think can work in the long run is a friendship.

How would he meet with the highspren? You are probably right, though. And even if you aren't, Nin could have probably had Nightblood consume the first approaching highspren to send them a message.
-
Also, Jasnah spoke with highspren, who had knowledge of previous Desolations, so likely they have survived Recreance unlike the Cryptics, who were all killed. The Skybreakers today aren't the same people, of course. I'm curious how the no-surgebinding rule works for them, though. If their members truly lived up to the Order's expectations, wouldn't they attract highspren?

I'd prefer someone kind, genuine and noble over a passionate formation of rocks, but that's me.

Why (I think) that Kaladin is a better hero than Dalinar
Aleksiel replied to Patrick Star's topic in Stormlight Archive
You do have a point, but what else would you have Kaladin do? He can only save a limited amount of people. Where would you have him start? A random village where nobody knows him and the citizens are more likely to run away from him than follow? Why is a random village a better start than his hometown? Is it right and honorable to not go to his parents? edit: the everstorm is going the opposite way a highstorm does and Dalinar's scholars said it'll hit Shinovar in two days, so it hasn't changed the Parshmen in Alethkar yet. -
It's ShallAn and Kaladin. I've noticed you misspell their names regularly. Even if you've only listened to the audiobook, you've been around long enough and should learn how to spell the names of the main characters.
